Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hurricane Parties- A Tradition for many If you have never run to the shores to feel the brunt of hurricane wind, you've never experienced one of the biggest thrills in living near the Gulf Coast. Salt-water spraying from the pounding surf is exhilarating in itself. Nature's Wonders are also Nature's Follies. Needless to say, as many can attest, braving the eye of a powerful hurricane storm can be utter foolery. Hurricanes, are nothing new to residents of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. For decades and even centuries, many Coast families have had the tradition of gathering with their family or friends in the comfort of the grandparents home or the dwelling that was deemed most safe and comfortable. Folks would gather together seeking one and other's familiar company. It was much like a family reunion - each would bring their treasure bundles and boxes of goodies to spend the night through. There was always plenty of food and cakes, cookies, and candies lending an air of celebration. - And there was always the hidden or open bottles of "Kickapoo Joy Juice." Fears would be quelled, particularly of the young ones who would listen to past stories boastfully told of hurricanes gone by. Usually the men would gather in the living room as the women posted themselves in the kitchen, and the kids ran helter-skelter. Radios and televisions were made in good order and kept on as background noises to the nervous chatter and the extended greetings with new arrivals. Telephone calls were made to let everyone know who was present and accounted for and at what location they could be found. There was always the need for someone's medication, a particular battery size, one of the kid's favorite toys - that would cause one of the young men to rush out to brave the early awakening storm - just to have an opportunity to refresh and get to a store - or home to pick up "vital" supplies. Before the errand boy's departure, one of the older men would always slip a wad of one dollar bills in his pocket with a wink that needed no explanation.

So he travels to the outermost reaches of the land to find out what really happened. When he lands on the island he is met by a young woman, hair streaked with blood, raving like a lunatic. She is one of the sisters, who tell him the story of how his son died in the great hall of the Clan, the Norse gods, who were holding a party. But the festivities soon got out of hand, the guests began to argue with one another, and the mischievous shapeshifter Loki dealt a deadly blow. Set in a dystopian future that recalls Orwell and Zamyatin, Klas Ostergren has weaved a dizzying story of magnificent scope and foul play. Moving from the golden halls to the depths of the underworld, it is about one man's search for justice for his son in a world on the brink. A place where true love is so strong it can bring about the end of time.

And the discovery of her corpse has the whole village investigating the murder. As the novel unfolds in a dazzling linguistic torrent, with each unreliable narrator lingering on new details, new acts of depravity or brutality, Melchor extracts some tiny shred of humanity from these characters—inners whom most people would write off as irredeemable—forming a lasting portrait of a damned Mexican village. Like Roberto Bolano’s 2666 or Faulkner’s novels, Hurricane Season takes place in a world saturated with mythology and violence—real violence, the kind that seeps into the soil, poisoning everything around: it’s a world that becomes more and more terrifying the deeper you explore it.

Book Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere

Download or read book Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere written by Julie T. Lamana and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ten-year-old girl learns the importance of family and community in this tale of love and hope set during the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Armani Curtis can think about only one thing: her tenth birthday. All her friends are coming to her party, her mama is making a big cake, and she has a good feeling about a certain wrapped box. Turning ten is a big deal to Armani. It means she’s older, wiser, more responsible. But when Hurricane Katrina hits the Lower Nines of New Orleans, Armani realizes that being ten means being brave, watching loved ones die, and mustering all her strength to help her family weather the storm. A powerful story of courage and survival, Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere celebrates the miraculous power of hope and love in the face of the unthinkable. Praise for Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere “Lamana goes for and achieves realism here, carefully establishing the characters and setting before describing in brutal detail, beyond what is typical in youth literature, the devastating effects of Katrina—loss of multiple family members, reports of attacks in the Superdome, bodies drifting in the current and less-than-ideal shelter conditions. An honest, bleak account of a national tragedy sure to inspire discussion and research.” —Kirkus Reviews “I recommend the book because I think it does a good job of capturing what life was like in New Orleans both before and after Katrina and because Armani’s journey will give readers a lot to think about and discuss. But parents will want to know that it doesn’t flinch when describing the death and destruction that hit New Orleans during that time and be cautious with younger, sensitive readers.” —Cindy Hudson, author of Book by Book

Book excerpt: From killer storms to their implications for the insurance premiums of U.S. residents, this much-awaited update explores the ecological, social, and economic consequences of hurricanes and their effects on both coastal and inland areas. In September 1776 the so-called "Hurricane of Independence" hit Canada and the northeastern United States, leading to 4,170 deaths. In 1900 around 8,000 perished in the Galveston Hurricane and the resulting tidal surge. Coastal defenses, early warning systems, and evacuation procedures have improved enormously. However, hurricanes still pose a potentially devastating threat to life and property, especially in coastal regions of the United States and the Caribbean. What causes these extreme storms? How can we best defend ourselves? Hurricanes: A Reference Handbook explores the historical, ecological, economic, and social dimensions of hurricanes in North America. Synthesizing literature from a wide range of authoritative sources, this book is an invaluable guide to hurricanes and their impact and is essential reading for students, scientists, mariners, and coastal residents alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fig, a sixth grader, wants more than anything to see the world as her father does. The once-renowned pianist, who hasn’t composed a song in years and has unpredictable good and bad days, is something of a mystery to Fig. Though she’s a science and math nerd, she tries taking an art class just to be closer to him, to experience life the way an artist does. But then Fig’s dad shows up at school, disoriented and desperately searching for Fig. Not only has the class not brought Fig closer to understanding him, it has brought social services to their door. Diving into books about Van Gogh to understand the madness of artists, calling on her best friend for advice, and turning to a new neighbor for support, Fig continues to try everything she can think of to understand her father, to save him from himself, and to find space in her life to discover who she is even as the walls are falling down around her. Nicole Melleby’s Hurricane Season is a stunning debut about a girl struggling to be a kid as pressing adult concerns weigh on her. It’s also about taking risks and facing danger, about love and art, and about coming of age and coming out. And more than anything else, it is a story of the healing power of love—and the limits of that power.
