Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Howe Readers by Grades, Vol. 6 In preparing Book Six the editors have continually kept in mind the interest of boys and girls and have carefully surveyed the best literature with a view to the selection of material which is entertaining and inspiring. The list of authors contains the names of those who have had the largest part in writing the great books of the world. Every selection has its special interest and purpose, - now the appeal to one's self-respect, now the love of nature, of country, of home, the theme of brotherhood, the supreme worth of the common everyday virtues. Following the usual custom, the authors have abridged the selections when, for pedagogical reasons, it has seemed desirable to do so. The reading matter may therefore be chosen with a closer regard for its place in literature. The selections in this book it is believed have been drawn from the best sources available for young readers. Attention is called to the fact that nearly all the selec tions used are organic parts of larger literary wholes, to which the notice and interest of pupils will naturally be directed through the reading of these selected parts. Great care has been taken that the part chosen in each case shall constitute an artistic unit, while still sustaining its organic relation to the work from which it is taken. Much study has also been given to the kind and range of ideas embodied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Blodgett Readers by Grades: Book Six In the study of every art there must be a certain familiarity with the products of genius before any attempt at classification is possible. This is as true of literature as it is of music and painting. At first the pupil has no more curiosity as to the authors represented in his reading book than he has concerning the musicians whose songs he sings, or the painters and sculptors whose work adorns his schoolroom. His teachers know, however, that in order to lay claim to any degree of general culture he will need to become acquainted with the names and characteristics of the master workmen in literature. When he applies for admission to one of the higher institutions of learning, he will assuredly discover that, whatever his special interests are, he will be expected to possess a definite amount of this purely literary information. It is true that it mav be acquired in the second ary schools, but only at a sacrifice of time which is needed for other work. Much of this knowledge may be assimilated quite as easily in the lower grades, with a corresponding impetus toward later achieve ment and enjoyment. A glance at the list of authors represented in this and the succeed ing volume will show scarcely a name that is outside the demands of literary culture. Yet experience has already made it clear that the selections are wholly within the grasp of pupils of the sixth and seventh grades. Most of the material is in narrative form, and all of it, it is hoped, will stand the test of schoolroom requirements. Book The Jones First Reader Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Jones First Reader Classic Reprint written by Lewis Henry Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jones First Reader This is the first book of a series of Readers intended to cover the reading work of the eight grades of the elementary schools. It is not intended that the series shall furnish all the reading matter needed in these grades, but rather a basal line of thought and a vocab ulary sufficient for the interpretation of all reading matter used in these grades from whatever sources taken. Each book of the series is adapted to its place and part in such a plan. This book begins its work well within the child's present interests, but in some one or more of its lessons pushes each of these interests beyond the point which the child could reach without assistance. The subject-matter of this book has been carefully chosen from all fields of knowledge desirable for children of the age for which it is intended. Nature study has been given a prominent place, especially in the earlier pages. Animals have been presented through their most pleasing and characteristic attributes and the children are led to sympathetic and humane treatment of themthrough a real interest in them and their needs. Through out the book care has been taken to present the elements of ethics as applied concretely to conduct. The greatest service that a series of Readers can render to pupils is to supply each with proper standards of life and conduct. This book, as the first of the series, touches many matters pertaining to life and conduct, showing moral forces at work producing their legitimate effects. The lessons drawn from nature study give preference to the poetical rather than to the scientific interpretation of nature. The poetical interpretation, however, is always based on and developed from a correct relationship of facts, so that the child will have no mistaken notions to correct in his later scientific studies. This book is adapted for use through each or all of the modern methods of teaching beginners to read. The sentence method, the word method, and the phonic method - if such simple processes of teaching may properly be dignified by the term method - may be used to advantage, separately or in happy combination. The modern teacher knows well how to use good reading matter so as to develop the power to read well and at the same time to cultivate the love for good literature. Book Supporting Reading in Grades 6 12

Download or read book Supporting Reading in Grades 6 12 written by Sybil M. Farwell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-06-11 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a curricular framework for students grades 6–12 that school librarians and teachers can use collaboratively to enhance reading skill development, promote literature appreciation, and motivate young people to incorporate reading into their lives, beyond the required schoolwork. Supporting Reading Grades 6–12: A Guideaddresses head-on the disturbing trend of declining leisure reading among students and demonstrates how school librarians can contribute to the development of lifelong reading habits as well as improve students' motivation and test scores. The book provides a comprehensive framework for achieving this: the READS curriculum, which stands for Read as a personal activity; Explore characteristics, history, and awards of creative works; Analyze structure and aesthetic features of creative works; Develop a literary-based product; and Score reading progress. Each of these five components is explained thoroughly, describing how school librarians can encourage students to read as individuals, in groups, and as school communities; support classroom teachers' instruction; and connect students to today's constantly evolving technologies. Used in combination with an inquiry/information-skills model, the READS curriculum enables school librarians to deliver a dynamic, balanced library program that addresses AASL's Standards for the 21st-Century Learner.
