Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hot Springs and Geysers of the Yellowstone and Firehole Rivers I have mentioned only a few of the attractive features about these springs, which so charm the visitor. There is neither time nor space in an article of this kind to describe all. Above this middle terrace are one or two other localities about three hundred feet farther up on the sides of the mountain.(plate I.) Book The Mineral Waters and Spas of New Zealand Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Mineral Waters and Spas of New Zealand Classic Reprint written by Arthur S. Wohlmann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-23 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mineral Waters and Spas of New Zealand With the constant advance of knowledge, and the consequent incessant recrystallization of our ideas, the medical world is embarrassed with an ever-increasing ood of literature. So great is this ood that one feels that some very good excuse indeed is needed before one adds even a single drop to the ocean of verbiage. There can be only two excuses - either something new can be told, or something old can be put more clearly than it has been put before. I hold myself especially fortunate in that, to a great extent, I can avail myself of the former pretext and can claim the privileges of the pioneer. Beyond a small pamphlet by Dr. Ginders, published some fifteen years ago, dealing with the waters of Rotorua and Hanmer before those spas were to any extent developed, there has been, so far as I am aware, no work dealing with the mineral waters of New Zealand from a medical point of view. In 1902 I was engaged by the Government of New Zea land to advise in the development of the mineral-water health resorts of the country, and this has been my work ever since. Book Las Vegas Hot Springs New Mexico Classic Reprint

Download or read book Las Vegas Hot Springs New Mexico Classic Reprint written by W. H. Carruth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Las Vegas Hot Springs, New Mexico For many miles the stream offers the perfection of fly-fishing. Here and there are pools too, deep for wading, but the fisherman equipped with hip-boots is seldom forced to the bank. Following the winding shallows, the entire stream may be whipped, left and right, and every lurking-place under projecting shore and bough explored with a cast of flies. In a delightful three days upon this river, the writer recalls but two occasions of even momentary embarrassment to his leader by bush or branch, and the avidity with which the Pecos trout rise to a fly, and the determination with which they resist capture, has rarely been equaled in his experience. Book Hot Springs Past and Present Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hot Springs Past and Present Classic Reprint written by Sally Royce Weir and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hot Springs, Past and Present Not far from Hot Springs, Mountain Island stands boldly in mid-stream; and the turbulent river, after dashing itself madly against its rocky face, is divided into two currents, to meet again below it after passing over a picturesque fall. At that place the train passes through the Rock Cut, a dangerous place on the road for any track walker, and already marked by one tragedy. A tramp mother and her five forlorn little children were overtaken by a passenger train at this spot, and the mother was killed while trying to rescue one of her younger children. A few seconds after passing this spot, the train swings around a curve, and dashes on to the bridge at Deep Water. Here the river is so narrow that one would think an active boy could jump across it, but the water is forty feet deep or more, and in a wreck at this point some years ago the engine and tender were completely buried out of sight, except one small corner of the tender which could still be seen above the water. Just below the bridge the river is very broad and it is here that the valley of Hot Springs is first seen. It makes a beautiful picture from this point. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Hot Springs: Laf-Eh! Or Laugh-Eh Oh! How I Had To Laugh - eh when the following telegram was forwarded to me, while just emerging from the Vapor World of my Phantasmagoria "Owondlo" (A Fish Opera): "Engagement good. Bring Bass Clarinet. Room free." Winter was beginning to make its appearance. Not a green leaf, no summer bird could be seen in the wooded surroundings of Chicago. I availed myself of the opportunity and accepted the engagement. "Music is for musicians and not for fools." Mr. Noitall: "Dont you know that all musicians are bums?" "Yes, but all bums are not musicians." I may be a fool, but whoever takes me for one, may be the fool. Foundation is the principle of all things, and principle is just the thing that most of the human race do not possess. You cannot buy genius, nor can it be acquired; it is a hidden force or forces which are born in one and carried to another. At last I arrived at my destination, among timberlands and rising hills, or mountains as they call them, where an abundance of natural waters flow from curious fountains, hot and otherwise. I was taken to a room, No. 7, in a bath house, converted into a hotel, which represents the annex to a large hotel. An old carpet that had probably lain there ten years without being removed caused general effects, etc. Being a newcomer, I did not wish to create a disturbance by having the room swept immediately. Now I had to laf - eh!(laugh - eh). Later on I went into the main hotel near by. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Climate of New Mexico and Las Vegas Hot Springs Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Climate of New Mexico and Las Vegas Hot Springs Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Climate of New Mexico and Las Vegas Hot Springs It has been a general observation among the thousands of tourists and invalids that have sojourned and received treatment at the above named resort why the merits of the climate and healing properties of the thermal springs were not brought to the notice of the medical profession and invalids throughout the United States. In response to the above query, the following facts and data are respectfully submitted: New Mexico is situated in latitude 31 degrees, 21 minutes and 37 degrees north; longitude, 103 degrees and 109 degrees west. It contains an area of square miles. Large spurs, branching out from the Rocky mountains, traverse the territory from north to south, reaching in many instances an elevation of from to feet. Immense prairies, between these spurs, form the principal features of New Mexican topography. Las Vegas is in 3 5 degrees 40 minutes north latitude; 28 degrees 15 minutes west from Washington. The Las Vegas Hot Springs (named after the town) are situated six miles from the city of Las Vegas (the Meadows), and is connected by a branch of the atchi son, topeka santa FE railroad. The Springs are beautifully located at the entrance to the Gallinas Canon, and are so nestled among the foot-hills that violent wind and dust storms are escaped. The altitude of the Springs is above sea-level. In seeking out a climate for pulmonary and respiratory diseases the following is imperative. Book Hot Springs County Classic Reprint

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hot Springs County The millions of horse (water) power going to waste at this point and at the falls (rapids) of the Ouachita, halfa mile above, will some day be utilized, and when they are, the Lowell of the South will be built. We have made a personal inspection of this fine water-power, and we have also visited Lowell, Fall River and Lawrence, in Massachusetts; Manchester and Nashua, in New Hampshire; Lewistown, Maine, as well as the most of the other manufacturing towns of New England, and we truly believe that with the exception of the last named place, none of them have a better water power than can be made at the Rapids of the Ouachita, generally spoken of as the Falls. There is a fall of 195 feet from the falls to Rockport (one-half mile), and the rocky ledge which crosses the Ouachita River at the falls, or first rapids, forms a solid foundation for a masonry dam, which can be extended fully thirty feet high, if desired, above low water, and connected with this solid stone ledge on each bank, which ages ago formed a fine natural dam across this beautiful river.
