Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Warwick, Rhode Island, From Its Settlement in 1642 to the Present Time: Including Accounts of the Early Settlement and Development of Its Several Villages; Sketches of the Origin and Progress of the Different Churches of the Town, &C., &C The present work was commenced as a means of relaxation from professional labors, with simply the intention of furnishing a series of historical sketches for a country newspaper. I had only pursued my inquiries for a brief season when I found the field so rich in interesting and important historical matter, that I was led to believe that even a poor reaper might gather a considerable harvest. It was a matter of surprise that one of the constituent towns of the colony of Rhode Island, and one that throughout its history has exerted so important an influence upon its prosperity, and produced so many men of talent and influence, should not have found among them some one to perform this work many years ago. It was not, however, until a large portion of the material of this volume had accumulated upon my hands that I concluded to publish it in its present form. The amount of biographical and genealogical matter that I have allowed to come in, may be regarded by some as excessive for such a work, and the separate accounts of the villages, instead of incorporating them into the general history of the town, may be open to criticism. I preferred this arrangement, as I conceived it would give me a better opportunity to introduce many items of a semi-historical and traditional character with which the several villages abound. It would have been an easy task to have filled a much larger volume than the present with the published documents relating to the town, with which the Colonial Records and other works abound, but I preferred to leave that which is already well preserved, and secure a portion of that which, from the nature of the case, was liable to be lost. Thousands of his direct descendants currently live in America. The author has spent 25 years researching historical documents in England to shed new light on Dolor's life before he immigrated to New England. The author's research results both corrects and updates all previous books and genealogies previously written about Dolor and his wife, Margery (Willard) Davis, including the first accurately published vital statistics for their four "English-born" children, and their residences within Sussex County, England. Nicholas Davis, international merchant mariner, is the author's 8th-great grandfather who lived near his relative, Dolor Davis, in Barnstable, Massachusetts from 1643 CE to 1670 CE. The bulk of this ebook covers the fascinating lives of Nicholas Davis, his family, and many of his descendants. The reader will discover how "Quaker" Nicholas Davis positively impacted the formation of New England's Colonies through his honest trading relationships, his deep friendship with the native Wampanoag people, and by his philanthropy. Included in this ebook are very interesting stories and first hand accounts of Nicholas Davis' descendants who were abducted by pirates, and who survived perilous seafaring journeys to South America, among other narratives.

Book excerpt: Tells the story of one state in particular whose role in the slave trade was outsized: Rhode Island Historians have written expansively about the slave economy and its vital role in early American economic life. Like their northern neighbors, Rhode Islanders bought and sold slaves and supplies that sustained plantations throughout the Americas; however, nowhere else was this business so important. During the colonial period trade with West Indian planters provided Rhode Islanders with molasses, the key ingredient for their number one export: rum. More than 60 percent of all the slave ships that left North America left from Rhode Island. During the antebellum period Rhode Islanders were the leading producers of “negro cloth,” a coarse wool-cotton material made especially for enslaved blacks in the American South. Clark-Pujara draws on the documents of the state, the business, organizational, and personal records of their enslavers, and the few first-hand accounts left by enslaved and free black Rhode Islanders to reconstruct their lived experiences. The business of slavery encouraged slaveholding, slowed emancipation and led to circumscribed black freedom. Enslaved and free black people pushed back against their bondage and the restrictions placed on their freedom. It is convenient, especially for northerners, to think of slavery as southern institution. The erasure or marginalization of the northern black experience and the centrality of the business of slavery to the northern economy allows for a dangerous fiction—that North has no history of racism to overcome. But we cannot afford such a delusion if we are to truly reconcile with our past.
