Book The History Of The Airborne Forward Air Controller In Vietnam

Download or read book The History Of The Airborne Forward Air Controller In Vietnam written by Lt.-Cmdr. Andrew R. Walton and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Department of Defense predicts that ground forces of the future will wage tomorrow’s wars by replacing large numbers of personnel and organic firepower for advanced technology and superior maneuverability. Those forces must be prepared to face an unconventional enemy who will operate in small, lethal units interspersed with the civilian population rather than facing coalition forces with massed formations. This scenario of blurred lines of battle and difficulty determining friend from foe resembles very closely what the U.S. military faced in Vietnam. This paper will address the successes and failures of United States airborne forward air controllers (FACs), particularly in Vietnam, and whether combat lessons learned were passed from service to service or historically from conflict to conflict. The FAC mission has not significantly changed since the end of the Vietnam War, and a thorough study of operational and tactical lessons learned by those aircrew will significantly enhance today’s FACs ability to find and destroy dispersed enemy forces in a wide array of environments.

Book USAF Air Controllers from World War II to Today

Download or read book USAF Air Controllers from World War II to Today written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes the United States Air Force's current employment effectiveness of tactical air. Specifically, it addresses the necessity of the forward air controller in this day of high technology weaponry, and it focuses on the efficiency of the human aspect of the tactical air control party (TACP). The study draws relevance from reviewing historical lessons from the interwar years, World War II, Korean War, evolution of the combat control team (CCT) and the Vietnam War. Historically, joint doctrinal development and execution in regard to tactical air has been a real problem. Also, command and control (C2), (joint) training, equipment, and morale have also been a problem. By illustrating these problems of the past and the solutions that were devised, the author is then able to evaluate the current status of the TACP effectiveness. The author concludes quickly that the TACP is effective today as demonstrated in the last two conflicts that utilized the TACP and CCT quite extensively. However, this study definitely shows that there are a lot of deficiencies in the TACP system today, many are along the same lines of historical problem areas -- doctrine execution, C2, training, and equipment. This study makes six recommendations to correct these deficiencies: emphasize and follow current doctrine for manning, equipping, and training; exercise and train the C2 of the tactical air control system regularly, make the TACP a weapon system, create an officer non-rated career air liaison officer, perform more joint training, and continue the TACP - Modernization program. These recommendations especially training and the creation of a career ALO could really provide the continuity that the TACP will need in the future. The thesis asserts that correcting these deficiencies will make the TACP efficient thus directly impacting combat effectiveness in a positive way. Finally, the thesis concludes that in the future the forward air controller will be relied upon more than ever, and if he is to employ effectively in the future these deficient areas must be corrected.

Book Significance Of The Human Being As An Element In An Information System

Download or read book Significance Of The Human Being As An Element In An Information System written by Lieutenant Jamie W. Achée USN and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research will explore the relevance of the human being as an element in an information system. The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence technology, especially information technology, has had on the way human beings understand and use information systems. This study will look at the use of forward air controllers and close air support in the European Theater of Operations during WWII and evaluate the technology, the doctrine and the people involved as they related to the forward air control-close air support information system. Other areas that will be discussed as they relate to the development of close air support include: incremental vs. radical change, organizational culture and change, and the dynamic nature of current and future operations as they relate to information systems. The primary research objective is to explore the answer to the following question: Based on the role of forward air controller in the European Theater of Operations during World War Two, what is the significance of the human being as an element in an information system? Secondary questions include: What are the necessary elements that make up an information system? How and where were forward air controllers used and were they effective? What were the information systems used by the forward air controllers and were they effective? Last, what implications do the findings of this research have for current technologies, organizational structure and the interaction between human beings and information systems in U.S. military operations?

Book Forward Air Controllers 1985 1995

Download or read book Forward Air Controllers 1985 1995 written by Department of the Air Force (Washington, D.C.) and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews the historical use of Forward Air Controllers (FACs), and examines the air and ground FAC's abilities to function in the threat environments of today and 1995. Two major assumptions were made: Close Air Support (CAS) will continue to be an integral part of tactical air support. The requirement for closely coordinated joint Army/Air Force operations will increase as the Army comes on-line with lighter combat units, greater numbers of sophisticated attack helicopters, and moves toward a doctrine which places increased emphasis on maneuver.

Book Historical Dictionary of the Korean War

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Korean War written by Paul M. Edwards and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-06-10 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Korean War has often been regarded as a forgotten war, although that is certainly unfair. It was, if anything, a rather crucial war within the ambit of the Cold War, started by North Korea in 1950 and, although the bulk of the fighting was over by 1954, peace has never been concluded and the two sides still face off over the demilitarized zone. On the other side of the zone is South Korea, which has since become a very prosperous and democratic country, while North Korea has achieved relatively little. So, that war is certainly not forgotten by the Koreans. And, given the large number of deaths and casualties, it is still remembered by many in the United States and other allies, as well as China and the Soviet Union. This Historical Dictionary of the Korean War, now in its second edition, does much to jolt our memory and inform us about the war. This is done first in a lengthy chronology, tracking the war but also the path to war and what happened after. The introduction covers the war as a whole, trying to make sense of it. The dictionary section provides all of the necessary details on significant persons, places and events, battles and other engagements, military units and material, as well as the political, economic and social background. There are also maps and a list of acronyms. This is really the ideal source for information, in addition to which, it also has an extensive bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Korean War has been termed "The Forgotten War" or the "Unknown War." It is a conflict which never assumed the mythic character of the American Civil War or World War II. However, this book asserts, it would be impossible to understand the Cold War and indeed post 1945 global history without knowledge of the Korean War. Providing a history of the Korean peninsula before the war and including a detailed analysis of the fighting itself, The Korean War goes beyond the battlefield to deal with the war in the air, ground attack, and air evacuation. The study also evaluates the contributions of the UN naval forces, the impact of the war on various homefronts and issues such as defectors, opposition to the war, racial segregation and integration, POWs and the media. Recently-released Soviet documents are used to assess the role of China, the Soviet Union, North and South Korea and the allied forces in the conflict. This fascinating work offers a unique analysis of the Korean War and will be invaluable to students of twentieth-century history, particularly those concerned with American and Pacific history.

Book From Wreaths to Wings

Download or read book From Wreaths to Wings written by Alex M. Wallis and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study covers the development of the weapons controller career field as it occurred in the United States Air Force after World War II. Beginning with the development of the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) and weapons controllers’ interactions with its various components and concluding with the 1999 Congressional approval to make Air Battle Managers rated and therefore permanently winged aviators, this history covers the different technological and organizational interactions that contributed to this evolution. This timespan breaks into four eras that capture how technology-enabled weapons controllers expanded capabilities and how global events influenced the direction of growth. The first chapter covers the development of SAGE in response to the rising Russian bomber threats. Chapter 1 concludes that weapons controllers leveraged emerging computing technology to start thinking ahead of the immediate situation, managing not only controlling individual airplanes but also evaluating the battlespace to see where these fighters might go after an engagement. Controllers that were thinking forward allowed aircraft to move seamlessly from one engagement to another, preserving time and, therefore, precious fuel resources, giving them an advantage when approaching the adversary. Chapter 2 discusses how enhanced mobility afforded by the EC-121 allowed weapons controllers to contribute to operations away from fixed theaters and develop skills not directly captured in then-standard doctrine. Next, the author discusses the role AWACS, the F-15, and the Fighter Weapons School played in building trust and credibility between weapons controllers and pilots, magnifying the lethality of the Air Force’s newest fighter aircraft. Finally, the events of the turbulent 1990s are discussed to show how the convergence of world events, organizational culture, and mission requirements influenced the recategorization of weapons controllers as rated aviators and opened the door for newly renamed air battle managers to serve at the very highest ranks."--Abstract.
