Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Melanesian Mission It needs but little consideration to grasp the importance of the fact that the development of so large a section of the world should have been in the hands of the great English men who have freely given themselves, their powers, their strength, and in two cases their lives for it; and not supinely left to the traders in human flesh who did so much to hamper their labour. Download or read book God s Gentlemen written by David Hilliard and published by University of Queensland Press. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Hilliard's God's Gentlemen, originally published in 1978, remains the only detached and detailed historical analysis of the work of the Melanesian Mission. Starting with its New Zealand beginnings and its Norfolk Island years (1867-1920), the work follows the Mission's shift of headquarters to the Solomon Islands and on until the beginning of the Second World War. The Mission, which grew out of the personal vision of the first Church of England Bishop of New Zealand, George Selwyn, formally defined its field of work as 'the Islands of Melanesia' although its activities were confined almost entirely to the island groups that now make up Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. The Diocese of Melanesia was a fully constituent diocese of the Anglican Church of New Zealand from its formation in 1861 until the creation of the autonomous Church of the Province of Melanesia in 1975. Based on a wide range of sources, God's Gentleman is the inner history of the slow growth of an important and genuinely Melanesian church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'In Melanesians and Missionaries', one of the best of the younger generation of missionary anthropologists demonstrates that a commitment to the missionary enterprise on the part of a solid scholar facilitates, rather than hinders, the anthropological study of a missionary topic. This is better anthropology because Dr. Whiteman is able to probe more deeply into his topic and demonstrates that he understands and appreciates both Melanesians and missionaries." Charles H. Kraft, Professor of Anthropology, School of World Mission, Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena

John Selwyn, D.D., Late Bishop of Melanesia The illustrations are from photographs taken chiefly by Dr. Welchman and the Rev. A. H. Brittain during my tour; a few are my own handi work. The apparatus belonged to Mr. Beattie, photographer, Hobart, by whose directions we were able to save some ten dozen views from injury until he could develop them. Mr. Beattie is ready to supply photographs and lantern slides at moderate cost. The photograph of Taki is given by the kind permission of Captain Davis, r.n. For the index and for supervision of proofs in England I am indebted to the kindness of the Rev. A. V. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
