Download or read book The Anglican Tradition in South Africa written by O. M. Suberg and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anglicanism in South Africa was brought to the Cape in the early nineteenth century by visitors and settlers. It had its roots in the Church of England and drew from those roots for clergy and layworkers. This monograph is not a definitive study, but is an outline of the history of Anglicanism in South Africa. It encompasses the formation of the Church of the Province of South Africa in 1870; the Colenso controversy; the effect of legal cases in establishing its independence from the Church of England; and the struggle of some members against social injustice.

Book excerpt: "At a strategic time in South Africa's history, the Christian history which is absolutely basic to all developments, is presented in a comprehensive and objective way. Too little attention is given to the influence of religion in socio-political accounts. This is a creative and much-needed contribution to scholarship and general knowledge. . . . An outstanding work."--Dean S. Gilliland, Fuller Theological Seminary

Book Sketches of English Church History in South Africa

Download or read book Sketches of English Church History in South Africa written by James Alexander Hewitt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of English Church History in South Africa: From 1795 to 1848 When the Cape capitulated to the English arms in September, 1795, it was agreed that the privileges of the Dutch Reformed Church should be preserved, and during the seven years of occupation that body continued to be called the Established Church. The only services of the English Church were held, probably in the Castle, by the Military Chaplains, but no traces of any registers kept at that time are to be found. The Governor was the Ordinary, and his consent was necessary to marriages, and even to baptisms - fat least in the case of adults. The first clergyman with whose name we meet is the Rev. J. E. Attwood, Chaplain of h.m.s. Stately, and one of his earliest ministerial acts in the settlement led to a legal controversy with the authorities of the Dutch Church. At that time all persons about to be married were obliged to appear before a Lay Matrimonial Court in Capetown to prove that there were no legal impediments to the marriage. On the 2nd October, 1795, Mr. Attwood solemnized a marriage without this preliminary form being Observed. When the bridegroom applied to the Dutch Church to have his marriage registered, he was refused on the ground that the marriage was illegal. He then petitioned the Governor.
