Book A History of the Royal Navy World War II

Download or read book A History of the Royal Navy World War II written by Duncan Redford and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Navy's operations in World War II started on 3 September 1939 and continued until the surrender of Japan in August 1945 - there was no 'phoney war' at sea. The navy played a central role in the evacuation of the retreating British army at Dunkirk, and later orchestrated the sinking of Germany's mighty battleship and Hitler's pride, the Bismarck. Without the Royal Navy's attention to the defence of Britain's seaborne trade - especially in the struggle against German U-boats in the Battle of the Atlantic - there would not have been food for the country, fuel for the RAF's operations or supplies to keep the army fighting in Europe, North Africa and the Far East. Yet the outstanding naval contribution to Britain's survival and eventual victory came at a heavy cost in terms of ships and to the men who had to face not just the violence of the enemy, but also the violence of the sea. This book argues that World War II was, effectively, a maritime war; it was the Royal Navy's war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the British Navy, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Earliest Period to the Present Time On sending forth the following volumes, it may be proper briefly to state the authorities on which the compiler of them has principally relied. The Board of Admiralty, with great liberality, have granted him access, without the slightest restriction, to all despatches and documents of every kind in their possession, of a date prior to the close of the year 1841. Lady Arthur Somerset placed in his hands several letters of her grandfather, Admiral Boscawen. Lord Camperdown furnished him with many details, previously unknown, relating to his grandfather's victory over the Dutch fleet. And, in giving an account of the more recent operations, he has been aided by a great number of distinguished living officers, whose kindness he acknowledges with every feeling of gratitude. To the energy and skill of the British Navy, commerce owed her protection against the world in arms, and without such powerful aid, peaceful traffic among civilized nations could never have attained its present flourishing condition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Royal Navy, Vol. 1 of 5: A History From the Earliest Times to the Present Yet, even if British students were in the habit of thoroughly digesting the ordinary British histories which are within their reach, they would still know little about the nature and services of the British Navy. Our greater historians deal very sparingly with those subjects. Many of them seem to have been deterred by an exaggerated estimate of the attendant difficulties, or by an impression that naval history is far too technical to be understood by lay people. Others have altogether failed to awaken to the importance of the matter, and have, by that very failure, convicted themselves of incompetence. As for the popular historians, the compilers of school histories, text-books, and such-like, they have for the most part, and indeed almost without exception, bungled, where they have not shamefully scamped, the facts of our naval story. Book The Safeguard of the Sea

Download or read book The Safeguard of the Sea written by N A M Rodger and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2004-10-07 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout Britain's history, one factor above all others has determined the fate of the nation: its navy. N. A. M. Rodger's definitive account reveals how the political and social progress of Britain has been inextricably intertwined with the strength - and weakness - of its sea power, from the desperate early campaigns against the Vikings to the defeat of the great Spanish Armada. Covering policy, strategy, ships, recruitment and weapons, this is a superb tapestry of nearly 1,000 years of maritime history. 'No other historian has examined the subject in anything like the detail found here. The result is an outstanding example of narrative history' Barry Unsworth, Sunday Telegraph

Excerpt: ...The justice of his views and the force of his arguments were fully recognised, his recommendation was adopted, and in compliance with it, a corps of marine artillery was established. But, while hostilities between us and the French were proceeding thus languidly, an occurrence of great importance took place which rudely tore away the flimsy veil beneath which the Spaniards sought to conceal their subservience to France, and their consequent enmity to us. Though at the time of our declaration of war against France nosimilar motions had been adopted towards Spain, our relations with that country were notoriously of a most doubtful character. Seven years before, Spain had agreed to furnish France with an armed contingent, and at the end of the last year, 1803, the force so to be supplied had been commuted for an enormous annual payment of nearly three millions of money. Our minister at Madrid, Mr. Frere, had addressed to the Spanish court more than one remonstrance on the subject; declaring, with truth, that a payment of so great an amount was manifestly, and in its very nature, a war subsidy. At the beginning of the year of which we are speaking, lb04, it became further known to our Government that detachments of French troops had been received at Ferrol, and that the Spaniards were equipping a powerful squadron at that port, which could hardly have any other object than an attack upon us. Mr. Frere now addressed to the Court of Madrid fresh remonstrances in a more peremptory tone, requiring Spain to desist at once from all naval preparations, which could only be looked upon as a defiance to Great Britain, and declaring that our Government would view the continuance of such preparations as an indication of a resolution to attack us so...

Book A History of the Royal Navy

Download or read book A History of the Royal Navy written by Martin Robson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars were the first truly global conflicts. The Royal Navy was a key player in the wider wars and, for Britain, the key factor in her eventual emergence as the only naval power capable of sustained global hegemony. The most iconic battles of any era were fought at sea during these years - from the Battle of the Nile in 1798 to Nelson's momentous victory at Trafalgar in October 1805. In this period, the Navy had reached a peak of efficiency and was unrivalled in manpower and technological strength. The eradication of scurvy in the 1790s had a significant impact on the health of sailors and, along with regular supplies of food and water, gave the British an advantage over their rivals in battle. As well as naval battles, the Navy also undertook amphibious operations, capturing many of France's Caribbean colonies and Dutch colonies in the East Indies and Ceylon; this Imperial dimension was integral to British strength and counteracting French success on continental Europe. This book looks at the history of the Royal Navy during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, 1793-1815, from a broad perspective, examining the strategy, operations and tactics of British seapower. While it delves into the details of Royal Navy operations such as battle, blockade, commerce protection and exploration, it also covers a myriad of other aspects often overlooked in narrative histories such as the importance of naval logistics, transport, relations with the army and manning. An assessment of key naval figures and combined eyewitness accounts situate the reader firmly in Nelson's navy. Through an exploration of the relationship between the Navy, trade and empire, Martin Robson highlights the contribution Royal Navy made to Britain's rise to global hegemony through the nineteenth century Pax Britannica.
