Book Vain Games of No Value

Download or read book Vain Games of No Value written by Terry Morris and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 1517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It should be unthinkable to write the social history of Britain from the late nineteenth century onwards without reference to association football. Yet by the time that the Football Association celebrated its centenary year in 1963, no serious academic analysis had been undertaken of the sport and of the various channels by which it had developed in different parts of the country. By the time that historians began to tackle that task, its complexity and diversity were such that it could only be undertaken in installments. Studies emerged that focused upon individual clubs and specific regions or which were limited to narrow time scales. No work examined the long century from the 1860s to the 1970s in full. This book analyses the growth of British football in all its aspectsthe developments of the football crowd, the status of the professional player, womens football, the difficult survival of amateurism, to mention but a few. It also highlights the factors that contributed to diverse developmental paths in different parts of the country. The author has used the widest range of source materials to achieve a broader overview of the games history than has previously been attempted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Football is unquestionably the world’s most popular and influential sport. There is no corner of the globe in which the game is not played or followed. More countries are affiliated to FIFA, football’s governing body, than to the United Nations. The sport has therefore become an important component of our social, cultural, political and economic life. The Routledge Handbook of Football Studies is a landmark work of reference, going further than any other book in considering the historical and contemporary significance of football around the world. Written by a team of leading sport scholars, the book covers a broad range of disciplines from history, sociology, politics and business, to philosophy, law and media studies. The central section of the book examines key themes and issues in football studies, such as the World Cup and international competition, governance and ownership, fandom and celebrity. The concluding section offers in-depth surveys of the culture and organisation of football in each of the regional confederations, from UEFA to CONCACAF. This book will be fascinating reading for any serious football fan and an essential resource for advanced students or scholars undertaking research in football or sport studies, and any practitioner or policy-maker working in football.

Book Football Grounds from the Air

Download or read book Football Grounds from the Air written by Aerofilms and published by . This book was released on 2010-11-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, Football Grounds from the Air: Then & Now has now passed through three editions. Covering each of the ninety-two clubs in the Premier and Football leagues, the book provides an historical view of the club's ground alongside a contemporary shot of the ground as it currently exists. Fully updated and revised, this new edition will include a number of clubs, including Cardiff, Colchester, and Rotherham that have completely relocated, whilst others have undergone significant changes. Apart from the changes to these grounds, the onset of automatic promotion/relegation between the league and conference now ensures that two clubs drop out from League 2 to be replaced by two from the conference. Whilst sometimes this results in former league clubs regaining their status, it can also mean that traditional non-league teams, such as Dagenham and Redbridge can enter football's higher echelons whilst league teams such as Accrington can return to the league after an absence of many years.
