Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "All the works of the mound-builders of our country are exceedingly interesting to the antiquarian and are valuable as illustrating the habits, customs, and condition of the people by whom they were formed, but the sepulchral tumuli surpass all others in importance in this respect. Although usually simple in form and conveying thereby no indications of the characteristics of the people by whom they were erected, yet when explored they reveal to us, by their internal structure and contents, more in regard to the habits, beliefs, and art of their authors than can be learned from all their other works combined." Cyrus Thomas (1825 – 1910) was a U.S. ethnologist and entomologist prominent in the late 19th century and noted for his studies of the natural history of the American West.

Book REPORT ON MOUND EXPLORATIONS PB

Download or read book REPORT ON MOUND EXPLORATIONS PB written by Cyrus Thomas and published by Smithsonian Books (DC). This book was released on 1985 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With westward expansion in the United States beyond the Appalachian wall in the late eighteenth century, settlers increasingly encountered the mysterious earthen mounds of the interior eastern woodlands. These mounds, and the identity of the mound builders, would remain at the center of archaeological interest and debate through much of the succeeding nineteenth century. The Division of Mound Exploration of the Bureau of Ethnology, Smithsonian Institution, was established in 1881 to resolve the issue of the identity of the builders of the mounds. Published in 1894 as the accompanying paper of the Twelfth Annual Report of the Bureau of Ethnology, the final research report of the Division rejected the various speculative scenarios of vanished races and convincingly demonstrated that the forebearers of American Indian groups were the builders of the mounds. This final report is generally recognized as marking the beginning of modern archaeology in the Americas."--Page 5.

Book The Mounds of the Mississippi Valley

Download or read book The Mounds of the Mississippi Valley written by Lucien Carr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mounds of the Mississippi Valley: Historically Considered TN a papef upon the Prehistoric Remains of Kentucky, published in the first volume iof these Memoirs, I have expressed the opinion that it was impossible to distinguish between a series of stone implements taken from the mounds in the Mississippi Valley, and a similar series made and used by the modern Indians. In fact, so alike are these objects in conception and execution, that any attempt to distinguish them, based' upon form or finish, must be but the merest guesswork. From the rude knife to the carved and polished gorget, they may, one and all, have been taken from the inmost recesses of a mound, or picked up on the surface amid the debris of a recent Indian Village; and the most experienced archaeologist, if called upon to decide as to their origin, would have to acknowledge himself at N or does this similarity step with objects made of stone. Onthe contrary, it is believed to extend to all the articles, of every kind whatso ever, that have thus far been taken from the mounds. Indeed, I might even go farther, and as the result of some years of work, as well in the field as in the library, venture the assertion that not only has there not, as yet, been anything taken from the mounds indicating a higher stage of develop ment than the red Indian of the United States is known to have reached, but that even the mounds themselves, and under this head are included all the earth-works of the Mississippi Valley, were quite within the limits of his efforts.
