Download or read book History of Leadville and Lake County Colorado written by Don L. Griswold and published by Colorado History Society. This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1878 the name "Leadville" became synonymous with one of the world's greatest silver-producing regions. During the 1880s, when Leadville's economy was at its peak, the town was the second largest in Colorado, a mecca for prospectors, gamblers, retailers, performing artists, and entrepreneurs. In many respects, its history epitomizes the volatile character of Colorado's mining industry-from the rush to establish businesses, schools, churches, and newspapers in a booming mining camp to the conflict and violence of the miner's strike of 1896. More than forty years ago, Don L. Griswold and his wife, Jean Harvey Griswold, set out to describe the social, political, and economic life that grew out of Leadville's hard-rock industry. Their story of Leadville and Lake County stretches from the earliest explorations of the Upper Arkansas Valley to the beginnings of molybdenum mining in the twentieth century. A veritable encyclopedia of historical information, this massive two-volume, fully indexed reference work includes rare photographs from the Griswolds' personal collection and a bibliographic overview of Leadville's history by Colorado historian James E. Fell, Jr. Told with grace, humor, and authority, The History of Leadville and Lake County, Colorado is an invaluable reference tool for historians, genealogists, and any who seek a deeper understanding of the rich history of this mining town in Colorado's high country.

Download or read book Communities of the Palmer Divide written by and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native American tribes once traversed the east-west anomaly of the Rocky Mountains known as the Palmer Divide as a passage between the high ranges and the Great Plains. Lying between Denver and Colorado Springs, and named for William Jackson Palmer, founder of Colorado Springs, the offshoot range divides the great Platte and Arkansas River systems. Settlers homesteaded, farmed, and ranched the area. Railroad construction in the 1870s led to towns supporting commerce and tourism, particularly in the western section of the Palmer Divide, in what eventually became known as the Tri-Lakes Area. The area drew tourists who enjoyed hiking, wildflowers, and the outdoors, and facilitated such local industries as ice harvesting, lumber milling, ranching, and potato farming. A vast area north of Colorado Springs, the Palmer Divide retains a picturesque rural nature and cohesive small-town feeling--creating such social events as the Rocky Mountain Chautauqua and the Yule Log Festival, as well as the enduring Palmer Lake Star on Sundance Mountain.
