This small town of just 1,200 residents is nestled in the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 8,350 feet above sea-level. Annually, tens of thousands of visitors are captivated, as they walk the historic streets filled with over two-hundred 19th century buildings, all in impeccable condition. Georgetown features the Georgetown Loop Railroad. Nearly 250,000 visitors ride this historic railroad annually. This railroad was one of Colorado's first visitor attractions in the 1800's. This spectacular stretch of 3 ft. narrow-gauge railroad was completed in 1884 in the wake of the Colorado Gold Rush, and was considered an engineering marvel for its time. It was used to haul silver ore from the surrounding mines as well as transport passengers visiting the scenic vistas that this region is noted for.The history of Georgetown and the railroad are detailed in this release, including the railroad's restoration that occurred in the 1970's and early '80's, along with its developments on up to the present day. The mines and the remarkable mine tours are also featured, their being a major component of the Georgetown Loop experience.
