Download or read book Cromwell was Framed written by Tom Reilly and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-29 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of "Cromwell: An Honourable Enemy" fifteen years ago sparked off a storm of controversy with many historians publically deriding the divisive and groundbreaking study. Dissatisfied with the counter-explanations of these seventeenth-century experts concerning Cromwell’s complicity in war crimes in Ireland, amateur historian Tom Reilly now throws down the gauntlet to his critics and issues a challenge to professional historians everywhere. In this entirely fresh work Reilly tackles his academic detractors head-on with original and radical insights. Breaking the mould of the genre, for the first time ever, the author publishes the actual contemporary documents (usually the privileged preserve of historians) so the authentic primary source documents can be interpreted at first hand by the general reader, without prejudice. Among the author’s fresh discoveries is the revelation of the identity of two (unscrupulous) contemporary individuals who, after exhaustive research, seem to be personally responsible for creating the myth that Cromwell deliberately killed unarmed men, women and children at both Drogheda and Wexford, and that a 1649 London newspaper reported that Cromwell’s penis had been shot off at Drogheda. Whatever your view on Cromwell, this book is persuasive. Conventional wisdom is challenged. Lingering myths are finally dispelled.

Original Name.--Ireland is one of the most ancrent kingdoms of Europe, so Drogheda is one ofthe most ancient town in Ireland.' Its-original name was Co4pa or Colpe, which took its rise from. Colpa, who, entering the Beyne, landed at Colpe.. Being killed, he was buried where the church of Colpe now stands. Whetherthis is to be classed with fable is a question among many. The arguments in its favonr are, indeed, but few-; and however tenacious we may be of a proud origin in this respect, we cannot, at this period of time, denominate it certain. Perhaps we might be able to establish the truth of the above, were-it not for the great losswhich Ireland has sustained in the-lamentable des-truction of her numerous ancient records. Tii town has its present name from abridge, and a ford.; for the Irish call a bridge Droghed, and a ford Ah, which constitute the name Tredagh or Drogheda. Ancient Inhabitants.--It is allowed by historians, that Ireland was peopled from different nations; the natives in that part of the West opposite to Spain, having come from thence, and who are distinguished, at this day, to be different from the other inhabitants of the kingdom. Dublin and the greatest part of Heath were peopled by the Deb. lanior Eblani; but from what colony they came cannot now be assertaiued. It is not probable, however, that Drogheda was peopled from the same ource, though the town formed the boundary of hat Provmce. The natives of the Northern and Eastern coast seem to be a distinct people from the Western Irish; by whom they are called Clani Gauls, that is, the offspring; of the Gauls. They are supposed to have come-originally from Gaul through Britain. They are of a squat, set stature, have short, broad faces, thick lips, ..

Book excerpt: In a century of unrelenting, bloody warfare and religious persecution in Europe, Cromwell was, in many ways, a product of his times. As commander-in-chief of the army in Ireland, however, the responsibilities for the excesses of the military must be laid firmly at his door, while the harsh nature of the post-war settlement also bears his imprint.
