Book The Historical Poetry Ancient Hebrews Vol 2

Download or read book The Historical Poetry Ancient Hebrews Vol 2 written by Michael Heilprin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Poetry Ancient Hebrews, Vol. 2: Translated and Critically Examined Mentions of King David abound in Scriptural poetry. No other mortal's name is similarly glorified in it. Yet even his occurs only incidentally. At some length he is spoken of in two psalms of late origin, the eighty-ninth and one-hundred-thirty-second; but he is the real subject of neither. The theme of the former is the threatening or accomplished downfall of the Judsean throne, involving the tragic fate of one of David's descendants - perhaps Josiah or Zedekiah, more probably Jeconiah; and of the latter, Zion arising from her ruin, and her sacred claim to become again the seat of a powerful Davidic dynasty. In both, the retrospect forms a contrast with the present of the nation, and is to show that the divine blessings vouchsafed Israel in connection with the son of Jesse are still held in abeyance. Book The Historical Poetry of the Ancient Hebrews

Download or read book The Historical Poetry of the Ancient Hebrews written by Michael Heilprin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Poetry of the Ancient Hebrews, Vol. 1 The first unquestionably poetical lines which we meet with in the Scriptures are woven into a legend of the antediluvian time. They present a brief address of Lamech, a descendant of the outcast Cain, to his two wives, Adah and Zillah. Adah had given birth to Jabal, the father of all who dwell in tents and tend domestic animals - that is, the instituter of shepherd life - and to Jubal, the inventor of musical instruments. Zillah was the mother of Tubal-Cain, who invented the art of forging brass and iron, and of his sister, Naamah, of whom nothing is told, but whose name, 'the graceful' or 'the lovely,' bespeaks her beauty. Book The Penguin Book of Hebrew Verse

Download or read book The Penguin Book of Hebrew Verse written by T. Carmi and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2006-06-29 with total page 964 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stunning anthology gathers together the riches of poetry in Hebrew from 'The Song of Deborah' to contemporary Israeli writings. Verse written up to the tenth century show the development of piyut, or liturgical poetry, and retell episodes from the Bible and exalt the glory of God. Medieval works introduce secular ideas in love poems, wine songs and rhymed narratives, as well as devotional verse for specific religious rituals. Themes such as the longing for the homeland run through the ages, especially in verse written after the rise of the Zionist movement, while poems of the last century marry Biblical references with the horrors of the Holocaust. Together these works create a moving portrait of a rich and varied culture through the last 3,000 years.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Sacred Poetry of the Hebrews, Vol. 2 of 2 Abarbanel distinguishes three species of Canticles. The first is the rythmical, or that with similar endings in use among the more modern Hebrews (who learned it from the Arabic writers), but which was certainly un. Known to the authors of the Holy Scriptures. The se cond was adapted to music, and sung either alone or ac companied with instruments: such are the songs of Moses, of Deborah, of David. The third species consists of pap i'ables, or proverbs; which species, says he (though by the way absurdly enough, as is not uncommon with the Rab. Binical writers), is properly denominated Shir. From this class, however, he excludes the parables of the pro phets, according to the distinction of Maimonides be. Tween prophecy and the Holy Spirit. (see [more Neboc. Ii. He says they are not Canti'cles, because they are not the work of the prophet himself, but the mere effect of the prophetic inspiration. M antissa Dissert. Ad Libr. Cosm, p. 413. Author's Note.
