Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 12: July, 1908 Now, it is to vital and actively disposed Christians of this type that the food-reform and health-culture Movement presents an opportunity, and a sphere of useful service which is in strict accord with the work of the early followers of the Master. On every hand around us we can find human beings who are suffering from some malady which results from dietetic transgression or unhygienic habit; and, in most cases, cure will promptly follow their return to a healthful mode of living. We can reveal to them the mistakes they are making, encourage them to amend their ways, tell them how to live in accord with Nature's Laws, and exemplify to them by our own healthy condition, the advantages of the hygienic and law-abiding life. In most instances we shall find ourselves well able to render such service, provided of course, that we have first found the Way of Health ourselves, and have given a reasonable amount of time to reading instructive books on the subject. And in exceptional cases, where complications may cause us to doubt how best to pro ceed, we can easily direct sufferers to some fully qualified and experienced physician who has studied the subject of 'disease, ' and also of 'diet in relation to Health, ' more fully than we have had opportunity to do; or we can tell them of books that will help them to apprehend the truths they need to learn. Download or read book The Herald of the Golden Age Vol 12 written by Sidney H. Beard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-08 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 12: October, 1909 Much can be learnt from a body of fruitarians who have styled themselves The Order of the Golden Age, and who openly avow their detestation of all the products of the slaughter house. Without a doubt these people are extreme in their views, but those who do not wish to adopt them in their entirety can learn many a useful lesson from the literature to be obtained at their Offices in the Brompton-road. If for no other purpose than that of variation, a knowledge of vegetarian and fruitarian cookery is most desirable in this country. The neglect of vegetables in the average English household is of long standing, and it is quite time that a few valuable hints should be adopted. These can be found in a handy little book by Mr. Sidney H. Beard, which is, as its title explains, a guide-book to natural, hygienic, and humane diet. One cannot scan its pages without admitting the utility of the work, if only for the recipes contained therein, although the reasons urged for this class of diet will not meet with universal acceptance. An enthusiast is Mr. Beard, who for the love of the Cause, and apart from all motives of gain has devoted many years of his life to the advancement of the Fruitarian Movement. In this guide-book there are many simple and palatable recipes for breakfast dishes, and a special bloodless menu for Christmas. From these the discriminating reader can select pleasing variants, which are undoubtedly acceptable in warm weather. Even the most devoted adherent of our ordinary method of living will be disposed to admit that the introduction of a much larger share of fruit and vegetables in our national dietary would be beneficial. We do not appreciate sufficiently the value of apples, oranges, grapes, nuts, and such like food, which are frequently looked upon as a fitting conclusion to a meat meal. All of these could be used more freely than is the custom at present, and with decided benefit to health. Download or read book HERALD OF THE GOLDEN AGE written by Sidney H. Beard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-22 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 12: April, 1909 We treated infectious diseases 446, viz - Typhoid 281, In uenza 44, Dysentery 38, Measles 34, Tuberculosis 28, Scarlatina I4, Diphtheria 7 Diseases through Uric Acid Poisoning 125, viz: Chronic Rheumatism 65, Rheumatic Fever 27, Lumbago 9, Neuralgia 6, Sciatica 8 Diseases of the Respiratory System 76, viz: Bronchitis 34, Pneu monia 33, Pleurisy 9; Diseases of the Digestive Organs 72, with 15 cases of Appendicitis; Fractures 34, Cancer 28, Burns 19, Eye Diseases 18. In order to clearly mark the difference of our results in the two periods, I Shall now enumerate the losses through death during the whole time and during the two periods in total numbers and in percentages. Out of 1435 patients during the whole time we lost 159, or 11 per cent. Out of 793 patients admitted during the first period, we lost 102, or 13 per cent. Out of 642 patients admitted during the second period we lost 57, or 88 per cent. If we deduct from this total the incurable cases of Tuberculosis - viz., 28 and Cancer 16, which were the cause of 22 deaths in each period, or 44 during the whole time, we get the following results - Out of 1391 patients during the whole time we lost 115, or 82 per cent; out of 771 patients during the first period we lost 80, or io 4 per cent; out of 620 patients during the second period we lost 35, or 56 per cent. This grand result - viz., the reduction of the mortality rate from 13 per cent to per cent in all cases, and the reduction, after exclusion of the incurables, from per cent to per cent, or to nearly one-half, is principally caused through the extraordinary reduction of the fatalities in typhoid, as the following figures prove. Out of 281 cases of typhoid during the whole time we lost 28, or IO per cent; out of 171 cases of typhoid during the first period we lost 26, or 15 per cent out of 110 cases of typhoid during the second period we lost 2, or 18 per cent. But I have said that not only typhoid patients, but all the other patients, have shared in the benefits of the new treatment. In order to prove this, I now give the mortality rate of all cases, excepting the typhoids as follows: Out of 1154 cases, excluding typhoids, during the whole time we lost I34, or 117 per cent; out of 622 cases, excluding typhoid, during the first period we lost 79, or 13 per cent; out of 532 cases, excluding typhoid, during the second period we lost 55, or 103 per cent.
