The idea that one gains by stimulating body and mind by artificial means, betrays, in my opinion, not only ignorance of the simplest physiological laws, but also a want of experience." As to spirits, he says, "There is no sufficient pretext for using them, and the best course is to banish alcoholic drinks from the list of necessaries." The explorer gave it as his opinion that the strict prohibition of the use of brandy in Greenland is absolutely necessary to prevent extermination of the natives, and adds: "Not only should the sale of brandy be prohibited, but also of coffee, tobacco, and other noxious products. It took us a long time to make them acquire the taste for them. On the west coast we have been unhappily successful in begetting the taste for coffee." Cocoa Poisonous to Cattle Q.
