Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautiful book tells the fascinating story of the Habsburg dynasty, which ruled most of central Europe, Spain, Belgium, and parts of Italy for nearly 600 years, from the 15th through the 20th century. Charles V (1500-1558) once remarked that the sun never set on the Habsburg Empire, and for most of its history, Vienna served as its capital. The Habsburgs were acclaimed collectors and generous patrons of the arts. Franz Joseph I (1830-1916), the penultimate emperor of the dynasty, created the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna to house the artistic treasures of the empire. Today, this museum possesses one of the most renowned collections in the world of Western art. An extraordinarily wide-ranging survey of the Habsburgs' collections, this volume features classical Greek and Roman works, medieval arms and armor, tapestries, early modern painting and craftwork, ceremonial gilded carriages, and opulent costumes. Together, they reveal the splendor and the spectacle of the Habsburg court. Distributed for the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in association with the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna Exhibition Schedule: Minneapolis Institute of Arts (02/15/15-05/10/15) The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (06/14/15-09/13/15) High Museum of Art (10/18/15-01/17/16)

Book excerpt: Ten years after the tragic theft of Benvenuto Cellini’s masterpiece, a gold and enamel saltcellar, Vienna’s Kunstkammer (Art Room) at the Kunsthistorisches Museum has reopened. Completely renovated, the gallery is once again showcasing the Habsburg dynasty’s exceptional collection of art and wonders. Here is a trove of sculptures and bronzes by such giants as Donatello and Giambologna, the world’s greatest collection of Baroque carved-ivory figures, and glorious Baroque silver goblets and vessels, as well as magically endowed natural wonders, such as ostrich eggs mounted in jewels, gold, and silver gilt. Pride of place is held by the Cellini saltcellar, which was found nearly 3 years after its disappearance in the woods 55 miles north of Vienna, as were the thieves. It had been buried underground and survived in perfect condition. With text by the museum’s director, Sabine Haag, and the curator of the Kunstkammer, Franz Kirchweger, alongside specially commissioned photography, this book celebrates a marvelous collection, at last reunited.

Book Treasures of the Habsburgs

Book excerpt: The House of Habsburg was one of the wealthiest dynasties in Europe, and many of its members were also great collectors and patrons of the arts. Their love of magnificence is reflected in the quality and diversity of the objects in Viennas Kunstkammer, one of the most important collections of decorative arts in the world. This book features around 150 of the masterpieces from the Habsburg collections, ranging from sublime works of sculpture and fine metalwork to exotic objects fashioned from ostrich eggs, nautilus shells, rhinoceros horns and sharks teeth. Alongside the Saliera, Benvenuto Cellinis famous golden salt cellar, and the High Gothic sculpture known as the Krumau Madonna, are extraordinarily delicate works carved from ivory, gorgeous tapestries and mechanical marvels. The emperors, princes and archdukes who shaped these collections wanted not only to create a sense of wonder in all who gazed upon them but also to symbolize their own dominion over the world. Filled with lavish photographs and fascinating insights, this is a worthy tribute to the Habsburgs and their lasting artistic legacy.

Book Imperial Treasures

Download or read book Imperial Treasures written by Manfed Sellink and published by Lannoo Publishers. This book was released on 2012-01-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gemäldegalerie of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna possesses one of the most important collections of old masters in the world. These great works of art were gradually collected through the centuries by the archdukes of Austria and the later emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. Following the marriage in 1477 between Mary of Burgundy and Maximilian of Austria, there were close links between the ruling house of Habsburg and the Low Countries, a situation which continued until the end of the Ancien Regime in 1789. In a series of essays by leading scholars, this book explores the history of the collection and the emergence of the various pictorial genres. The exceptionally early development of history, portrait, landscape and genre painting in the Low Countries laid the foundations for the unprecedented flowering of both Flemish and Dutch painting in the 17th century. Vienna has agreed to lend an outstanding selection of 54 top works, all dating from the 15th and 16th centuries and all originating from the Southern Netherlands. For a period of three months (from October 5th 2011 until January 15th 2012) paintings by Jan van Eyck, Hugo van der Goes, Hans Memling, Gerard David, Michiel Sittow, Juan de Flandes, Jan Gossaert, Joos van Cleve, Joachim Patinir, Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel the Elder and other masters will supplement the already impressive collection of the Groeninge Museum in Bruges. This is the official catalogue of the event. ILLUSTRATIONS: 150 colour illustrations

Book Emperor Qianlong s Hidden Treasures

Download or read book Emperor Qianlong s Hidden Treasures written by Nicole T. C. Chiang and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this stunning reassessment, Nicole T. C. Chiang argues that the famous Qianlong art collection is really ‘the collection of the imperial household in the Qianlong reign’. The distinction is significant because it strips away the modern, Eurocentric preconceptions that have led scholars to misconstrue the size of the collection, the role of nationalism in its formation, the distinction between art and artifact, and the actual involvement of the emperor in assembling the collection. No one interested in Chinese art will be able to ignore the ramifications of this important study. Emperor Qianlong’s Hidden Treasures: Reconsidering the Collection of the Qing Imperial Household argues that the size of the collection was actually smaller than previously stated. Moreover, the idea that the collection put the whole of the empire on display (and thereby promoted political unity) does not square with the reality that most of the collection was hidden away. Instead, the collection was primarily for the emperor’s gaze alone. Chiang further explains that the collection was largely the product of work done by many specialists working at the Qianlong court, noting that the emperor often assumed a more supervisory role. Preliminary drawings, patterns, models, and prototypes of the items made in the imperial workshops also formed an important part of the collection, as they served to establish standardized models used to run the imperial household. The collection was thus both broader and narrower than previously stated. ‘Chiang has identified many misguided assumptions about the Qing imperial collection. In their place, she proposes a new definition of an imperial collection that does not give primacy to art objects. This bold revisionist thesis may be controversial, but it is important and deserves to be read widely for this exact reason.’ —Dorothy Ko, Barnard College, Columbia University ‘Chiang makes a new argument which will contribute to the literature on Qing imperial art. She shows that a distinction should be made between the Qianlong emperor’s activities in commissioning objects from the palace workshop and his activities in accumulating, assessing, and cataloguing objects that went into what she calls the “imperial household collection.” This work will attract wide attention from scholars in art history.’ —Evelyn S. Rawski, University of Pittsburgh
