Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Governor's Boss Her mother, owing to practice in tidily do ing her own clothes and the clothes for Ruth, was able to turn her hand to sewing for the neighbors - thus the wolf did not reach their door. Ruth, not quite purposeful enough to learn stenography or bookkeeping, or anything like a female profession, sought a position as tele phone operator, and after two or three years of assisting and substituting, finally reached the goal of her ambition. And no one has been heard to say that she did not perform her du ties with punctuality and dignity. Her grad nation from this position, or her degradation from it, as the reader may choose to regard it, must be reserved. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boss, or the Governor the Truth About the Greatest, Political Conspiracy in the History of America The removal of William Sulzer, Governor of New York State, marked an epoch in the history of the commonwealth. Corrupt political bossism had shown amazing power in many ways, in many states, but never in such a startling manner as in the removal from Office of a duly elected governor of the greatest state in the Union. Mr. Sulzer was elected by a plurality Of over the largest ever given to a gubernatorial candidate. His administration had won popular approval, and when the impeachment resolution was passed in the assembly, Gov cruor Sulzer was stronger with the rank and file of the voters of the state than he was on election day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Governor It was well-nigh a necessity of his existence to tread fast and deep into the slimy clay floor so that the lumps splashed up over his jerkin, and to know that every foot's-breadth of soil would be made into smooth red bricks that, piled to gether, would bring him heavy silver and new lands. His talent for commerce came to him from Holland, and had been sucked in with his moth er's milk. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Governor and Other Stories Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Governor and Other Stories Classic Reprint written by George A. Hibbard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Governor, and Other Stories HE sleek, spirited horses picked their scornful way up the avenue, held in restive subjection by the impassive coachman - stouter than his companion, the footman fresh-faced, clean-shaven, solid upon the box and apparently oblivious of all greatness save his own, as a coachman should be. The glossy carriage, almost noiseless in its slow motion, held only a grim, gray - haired old man. Many eyes were bent upon him. Pedestrians paused to look at him. The occupants of other carri ages broke short their conversations, and turned to catch another glance as he passed. Here and there a hat was lifted. Without change of expression, however, except when the light of personal recognition occasionally lit up his face and he half automatically returned a bow, the tall, thin, commanding, much noticed and most noticeable personage sat almost motionless. Book The Governors Letter Books 1818 1834 Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Governors Letter Books 1818 1834 Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Illinois Governor and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Governors Letter-Books, 1818-1834, Vol. 1 The Illinois State Historical Library presents in this volume the first of a new series which will be devoted to the manuscript material illustrating the office of the chief executive of the state. The letter-books here printed are in the office of the secretary of state at Springfield. The rule in printing has been to reproduce faithfully the copies as they were written, as far as the printed page can do so. There has been no attempt, therefore, to correct the spelling or punctuation of the original. In cases of doubt, however, the correct form has been chosen. One important change has been made. The letters were copied in the letter-book as opportunity and fancy dictated, so that order was entirely lacking and in many cases letters were copied twice. We have rearranged the material in chronological order, except in the case of enclosures, and have omitted the second copies, all the more important changes of this character being noticed in the foot notes; and we believe that this will make the volume more useful to students. In closing we wish to make our acknowledgments to Secretary James A. Rose for the courtesies he has extended to us and our assistants, and to Mrs. Jessie Palmer Weber for furnishing the copies of the portraits hat illustrate the volume. Book The Governor s Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Governor s Man Classic Reprint written by J. H. M. Abbott and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Governor's Man This little sketch of a remarkable event in early Australian history does not pretend to be anything more. The Bligh Rebellion was only an interlude in the beginnings of the development of Australia; in some respects rather a sordid interlude. But it was a picturesque and interesting happening, and was the first manifestation of the keen sense of politics which has since possessed Australia. We do not now, when we feel that we have had enough of them, make prisoners of the members of a Government - though frequently they deserve such treatment - but we still display the party bitterness and rancour which distinguished the actions of either side in 1808. Of the characters of the historical personages - such as Bligh, Macarthur, Johnston, and the others - it may be said that they are mostly guesswork. The records are fairly complete, but at this distance, it is not altogether easy to understand the motives of dead men, and the author does not sit in judgment on them. He only claims that he has tried to be fair in his reading of Australian history. His thanks are due to the Editor and Proprietors of "The World's News," of Sydney, in whose journal it first appeared serially, for permission to publish in book form this tale. It was written, for the most part, in that admirable institution, the Mitchell Library. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Governors Letter Books 1840 1853 Vol 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Governors Letter-Books, 1840-1853, Vol. 2 The series is thus obviously incomplete. There are no letters for the administration of Governor Duncan (18 34 for the first year of Governor Carlin's term, or the last year of Governor Ford's. Notwithstanding these deficiencies, it has been thought best to reproduce the letter books as they stand. Some of the missing letters are doubtless irretrievably lost. Mrs. Julia Duncan Kirby, in her sketch of Governor Duncan, notes the destruction in the great Chicago fire of a considerable body of Duncan manu scripts, then deposited with the Chicago Historical Society I It is hoped that the publication of this series may stimulate an interest in the subject which may result in filling some of the gaps. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lieutenant-Governor: A Novel The offices of the Governor and the Lieutenant-Governor adjoined. Each had its anteroom, in which a private secretary wrote eternally at a roll-top desk, an excessively plain-featured stenographer rattled the keys of his typewriter, and a smug-faced page yawned over a newspaper, or scanned the cards of visitors with the air of an official censor. At intervals, an electric bell whirred once, twice, or three times; and, according to the signal, one of the trio disappeared into the presence of the august personage within. But both the name and the place fitted the entrance to Clancy's Alley, to which the dive more properly belonged than to the busy, noisy thoroughfare that skirted the river. Here giant men and giant elevators toiled ceaselessly to stem the mighty billows of golden wheat that rolled in from the great prairies Of the West. Whalebacks in endless succession bumped against the piling of the river front and their sirens called hoarsely to be relieved Of the burden of grain that sank them to the water's edge. Then the clanking of mighty chains and wheels, the shrieking Of whistles, the hoarse swearing of the scoopers, the pufling and gasping Of the switch-engines as they struggled up and down the street with heavy strings of cars merged into the blood tingling roar which is the voice of Industry. This for sixteen hours out Of the twenty four. And sometimes, indeed, for days and nights on end without a breath when the rising flood Of grain threatened to overwhelm the channels built to control it.
