The introductory chapters give in story form the purchase of Manhattan Island and its growth under the Dutch and English governments. The chapters take up each administrative depart ment of the city government from its very beginning and tell, in detail, of its development and the manner in which it is managed at the present time. In order to bring the book up to date each department of the municipal government was most carefully studied under the immediate and helpful supervision of the Commissioner or some one delegated by him. After each chapter was written it was read critically by an official of the department treated. For this reason it can be stated without hesitation that the book is accurately brought up to date. As can readily be seen the authors are under the greatest obligation to the heads of the administrative departments and others connected with the municipal government, who gave such generous help and kindly advice while the book was being revised.
