Book The Good of Politics Engaging Culture

Download or read book The Good of Politics Engaging Culture written by James W. Skillen and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this addition to the acclaimed Engaging Culture series, a highly respected author and Christian thinker offers a principled, biblical perspective on engaging political culture as part of one's calling. James Skillen believes that constructive Christian engagement depends on the belief that those made in the image of God are created not only for family life, agriculture, education, science, industry, and the arts but also for building political communities, justly ordered for the common good. He argues that God made us to be royal stewards of public governance from the outset and that the biblical story of God's creation, judgment, and redemption of all things in Jesus Christ has everything to do with politics and government. In this irenic, nonpartisan treatment of an oft-debated topic, Skillen critically assesses current political realities and helps readers view responsibility in the political arena as a crucial dimension of the Christian faith.

Book excerpt: Christians need not be indifferent to the culture, in a society that has proven to be hostile to the Christian faith. They must seek to be equipped with the Christian worldview. This will empower them to understand and apply the total counsel of God to all areas of culture, as a means of bringing every area of thought to the obedience of Christ. The Lordship of Christ is not just for the Church, but the government, education, economics, law, and more. Christians must comprehend the dynamic relationship between the culture and the Christian faith since the Lordship of Christ encompasses and overlaps every area of life and reality, as there is nothing concerning reality that is not spiritual. Christians of our day have been sitting on the fence and very complacent to culture and society. And in response to Christ's command to "render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's..., Christians have rendered to Caesar, not just what belongs to him, but that which belongs to God as well. In our quest for righteousness, we have relinquished justices, what is the result? We have neither. This is the consequence of Christians woefully abandoning their Biblical obligation of "light and "salt" ministry and neglecting the cultural mandate and our commission to disciple our nations. (Matthew 28: 19-20; Genesis 1:28).Christianity demands that we not only be concerned but to be involved in our society. The Christian perspective of politics does not accept the separation of morality from politics; instead, consider all politics as a moral enterprise. The government regulates how citizens live in society, and how we live and treat each other primarily connects with the Christian cultural commission (mandate) to care for God's creation. In addition to the negative function of restraining crime in society, the government has a positive function of promoting a just social order so that people can live in peace and harmony. This is what Apostle Paul meant when he urged Timothy to, "...pray for their rulers and for all who have authority so that we can have quiet and peaceful lives, full of worship and holiness." The government should develop society and sustain a stable environment, in which people can live, dream, aspire, pursue, and fulfill their passion and destinies. They should protect the peoples' voluntary effort to shape civil society and community, by granting equal protection of the law and by upholding principles of justice to all-to the poor and the rich. The government must ensure that the weak and powerless are not exploited by guaranteeing liberty and providing security for everyone. This book is a wakeup call for all Christians. It discourages Christians from standing on the sideline of culture and provides the wisdom, strategy, and framework for Christian cultural engagement, including government and politics. It encourages and inspires Christians to defend Biblical principles, as they blend with government policies and laws. This will enliven an environment of freedom for all citizens to fulfill their potentials, without discrimination or oppression. It also expounds the Biblical basis for civil obedience and disobedience, as potent tools for restoring liberty and liberating society from the shackles of dictatorship. Indeed, it is a call for action for Christians everywhere to restore their decadent society bedeviled with godless governments so that the gospel is not hindered. The book highlights the challenges against the silent Church that does not stand up or speaks to the issues in society but enmeshed in status quo syndrome. It presents the true picture of the New Testament Church and how the disciples considered obeying God's commands a priority when it conflicts with the government's laws and policies. It explores the right theological solution, as the answers to the bisecting questions on the issues of governance.

Book Was Jesus a Socialist

Download or read book Was Jesus a Socialist written by Lawrence W. Reed and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If anyone was ever a socialist, it was Jesus."—Kelley Rose, Democratic Socialists of America Economist and historian Lawrence W. Reed has been hearing people say "Jesus was a socialist" for fifty years. And it has always bothered him. Now he is doing something about it. His new book demolishes the claim that Jesus was a socialist. Jesus called on earthly governments to redistribute wealth? Or centrally plan the economy? Or even impose a welfare state? Hardly. Point by point, Reed answers the claims of socialists and progressives who try to enlist Jesus in their causes. As he reveals, nothing in the New Testament supports their contentions. Was Jesus a Socialist? could not be more timely. Socialism has made a shocking comeback in America. Poll after poll shows that young Americans have a positive image of socialism. In fact, more than half say they would rather live in a socialist country than in a capitalist one. And as socialism has come back into vogue, more and more of its advocates have tried to convince us that Jesus was a socialist. This rhetoric has had an impact. According to a 2016 poll by the Barna Group, Americans think socialism aligns better with Jesus's teachings than capitalism does. When respondents were asked which of that year's presidential candidates aligned closest to Jesus's teachings, a self-proclaimed "democratic socialist" came out on top. Sure enough, the same candidate earned more primary votes from under-thirty voters than did the eventual Democratic and Republican nominees combined. And in a 2019 survey, more than 70 percent of millennials said they were likely to vote for a socialist. Was Jesus a Socialist? expands on the immensely popular video of the same name that Reed recorded for Prager University in July 2019. That video has attracted more than four million views online. Ultimately, Reed shows the foolishness of trying to enlist Jesus in any political cause today. He writes: "While I don't believe it is valid to claim that Jesus was a socialist, I also don't think it is valid to argue that he was a capitalist. Neither was he a Republican or a Democrat. These are modern-day terms, and to apply any of them to Jesus is to limit him to but a fraction of who he was and what he taught."

Book John Woolman and the Government of Christ

Download or read book John Woolman and the Government of Christ written by Jon R. Kershner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1758, a Quaker tailor and sometime shopkeeper and school teacher stood up in a Quaker meeting and declared that the time had come for Friends to reject the practice of slavery. That man was John Woolman, and that moment was a significant step, among many, toward the abolition of slavery in the United States. Woolman's antislavery position was only one essential piece of his comprehensive theological vision for colonial American society. Drawing on Woolman's entire body of writing, Jon R. Kershner reveals that the theological and spiritual underpinnings of Woolman's alternative vision for the British Atlantic world were nothing less than a direct, spiritual christocracy on earth, what Woolman referred to as "the Government of Christ." Kershner argues that Woolman's theology is best understood as apocalyptic-centered on a supernatural revelation of Christ's immediate presence governing all aspects of human affairs, and envisaging the impending victory of God's reign over apostasy. John Woolman and the Government of Christ explores the theological reasoning behind Woolman's critique of the burgeoning trans-Atlantic economy, slavery, and British imperial conflicts, and fundamentally reinterprets 18th-century Quakerism by demonstrating the continuing influence of early Quaker apocalypticism.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on the Regulation of Christian Churches, Adapted to the Present State of Their Affairs: To Which Are Added, Remarks on the Voluntary System, Considered in Relation to Its Spiritual Importance The remarks contained in the follow ing sheets, are all founded on one truth, which is used throughout as an axiom. By Lord Bacon, it was applied to the subjects of general learning, here an attempt is made to apply it to the government of a Christian church. The Bible is thus placed before a Christian in a church, as the whole physical universe is presented to a student in the world. The object of Bacon, was to guide his pupil in studying present existences, and hence, the form of his. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Living in God s Two Kingdoms

Download or read book Living in God s Two Kingdoms written by David VanDrunen and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2010-10-06 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern movements such as neo-Calvinism, the New Perspective on Paul, and the emerging church have popularized a view of Christianity and culture that calls for the redemption of earthly society and institutions. Many Christians have reflexively embraced this view, enticed by the socially active and engaged faith it produces. Living in God's Two Kingdoms illustrates how a two-kingdoms model of Christianity and culture affirms much of what is compelling in these transformationist movements while remaining faithful to the whole counsel of Scripture. By focusing on God's response to each kingdom—his preservation of the civil society and his redemption of the spiritual kingdom—VanDrunen teaches readers how to live faithfully in each sphere. Highlighting vital biblical distinctions between honorable and holy tasks, VanDrunen's analysis will challenge Christians to be actively and critically engaged in the culture around them while retaining their identities as sojourners and exiles in this world.
