Book excerpt: Kenneth McLeish's definitive translations of the most successful French dramatist of the Belle Epoque Georges Feydau (1862-1921) was the most successful French dramatist of the belle epoque and is now widely regarded as one of the greatest of farce-writers. His series of dazzling hits match high-speed action and dialogue with ingenious plotting. Reaching the heights of farcical lunacy, his plays nevertheless contain touches of barbed social comment and allowed him to mention subjects which would have provoked outrage in the hands of more serious dramatists. This volume of new, sparkling translations by Kenneth McLeish contains his two masterpieces, Heart's Desire Hotel (L'Hôtel du libre échange) and Sauce For the Goose (Le Dindon), with three other plays from the peak of his career, The One That Got Away (Monsieur Chasse!), Now You See It (Le System Ribadier) and Pig in a Poke (Chat en poche).

Book Sporting with the Gods

Download or read book Sporting with the Gods written by Michael Oriard and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-02-22 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sporting with the Gods examines the rhetoric of "game" and "play" and "sport" in American culture from the time of the Puritans to the 1980s. Focusing on writers and public figures who dominated public discourse, Oriard shows how the trope of game and play in fiction and in religious, social, and economic writings can be used to graph changes in the religious and social climate from the Puritans through the Transcendentalists to the Social Darwinists and from the Beats and hippies to the New Age spiritualists of the present decade. He also uses the trope to graph the shifting attitudes toward work (and play) in the game of business, as the United States moved to industrial capitalism and then to a postindustrial society of consumerism and leisure. The result is a history of this country from its inception, through the lens of a single trope, resonating with implications at every strata of American culture." --from back cover.

Book Heathen Gods in Old English Literature

Download or read book Heathen Gods in Old English Literature written by Richard North and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-12-11 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heathen gods are hard to find in Old English literature. Most Anglo-Saxon writers had no interest in them, and scholars today prefer to concentrate on the Christian civilization for which the Anglo-Saxons were so famous. Richard North offers an interesting view of Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian paganism and mythology in the pre-Viking and Viking age. He discusses the pre-Christian gods of Bede's history of the Anglo-Saxon conversion with reference to an orgiastic figure known as Ingui, whom Bede called 'god of this age'. Using expert knowledge of comparative literary material from Old Norse-Icelandic and other Old Germanic languages, North reconstructs the slender Old English evidence in a highly imaginative treatment of poems such as Deor and The Dream of the Rood. Other gods such as Woden are considered with reference to Odin and his family in Old Norse-Icelandic mythology. In conclusion, it is argued that the cult of Ingui was defeated only when the ideology of the god Woden was sponsored by the Anglo-Saxon church. The book will interest students interested in Old English, Old Norse-Icelandic and Germanic literatures, Anglo-Saxon history and archaeology.

Book The Manifest Presence of God

Download or read book The Manifest Presence of God written by Walter Beuttler and published by . This book was released on 2021-09-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter Beuttler was a teacher in the Bible School that I attended. He personally knew and walked with the Lord as few have. I personally witnessed the effect and the outworking of the very unusual personal relationship which he maintained with the Lord. The Lord often visited the classroom, as he taught, to reveal Himself and manifestly move in the lives of the students who sat under his ministry. As a result, my life was both challenged and changed. He often exhorted his students to cultivate a personal, experiential knowledge of the Lord. He used his unique spiritual walk and experiences with the Lord as a means to provoke us to begin seeking the Lord in earnest. Walter Beuttler traveled extensively in overseas ministry, teaching the principles of the "Manifest Presence of the Lord," and "Divine Guidance," until close to the time of his death in 1974. --Wade Taylor This is the intimate story of a man who walked with God as friend.
