Book The Goats Have Taken Over The Barracks

Download or read book The Goats Have Taken Over The Barracks written by Andrew Najberg and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Goats Have Taken Over the Barracks, his masterful first collection of poems, Andrew Najberg has created something just for our times: his poems, full of musical and imagaic tension, are of the earth and the heavens, of the mind and the quotidian, of God and science. Readers, in the sure hands of a mature and talented poet, are offered endless insights in precise language. These poems are full of dark delight, provoking and providing pleasure all at once. Open and follow this poet through the thirsty orchard. Listen when he tells you the "Draught's been too long for figs to plump. / Sometimes all you pick are wasps in skin." -Kathleen Driskell, Author Next Door to the Dead: Poems Samuel Johnson described metaphysical poets as ones who yoked together disparate perspectives, and its modern version is Roethke's idea of a poem taking desperate leaps. In Andrew Najberg, we have an wonderful extension of those poetics. We begin so often in a domestic scene that can turn elegiac as his description of crows that turns out to be a meditation on death. Or the description of an autopsy that seems like an autopsy on life itself. In the hands of a less masterful poet, we would have confusion: here we have a unique and valuable vision of the world. Najberg's is a vision meant to hold together what seems like our crumbling world: hardly ever has there been a poetry so needed in our times. -Richard Jackson author of Broken Horizons and Out of Place

Book The Buildings of Peter Harrison

Download or read book The Buildings of Peter Harrison written by John Fitzhugh Millar and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-10-20 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most important architect ever to have worked in America, Peter Harrison's renown suffers from the destruction of most of his papers when he died in 1775. He was born in Yorkshire, England in 1716 and trained to be an architect as a teenager. He also became a ship captain, and soon sailed to ports in America, where he began designing some of the most iconic buildings of the continent. In a clandestine operation, he procured the plans for the French Canadian fortress of Louisbourg, enabling Massachusetts Governor William Shirley to capture it in 1745. This setback forced the French to halt their operation to capture all of British America and to give up British territory they had captured in India. As a result, he was rewarded with commissions to design important buildings in Britain and in nearly all British colonies around the world, and he became the first person ever to have designed buildings on six continents. He designed mostly in a neo-Palladian style, and invented a way of building wooden structures so as to look like carved stone--"wooden rustication." He also designed some of America's most valuable furniture, including inventing the coveted "block-front," and introducing the bombe motif. In America, he lived in Newport, Rhode Island, and in New Haven, Connecticut, where he died at the beginning of the War of Independence.

Book excerpt: Today’s Goat, the celebrated West Point cadet finishing at the bottom of his class, carries on a long and storied tradition. George Custer’s contemporaries at the Academy believed that the same spirit of adventure that led him to “blow post” at night to carouse at local taverns also motivated his dramatic cavalry attacks in the Civil War and afterwards. And the same willingness to stoically accept punishment for his hijinks at the Academy also sent George Pickett marching into the teeth of the Union guns at Gettysburg. The story James S. Robbins tells goes from the beginnings of West Point through the carnage of the Civil War to the grassy bluffs over the Little Big Horn. The Goats he profiles tell us much about the soul of the American solider, his daring, imagination and desire to prove himself against high odds.
