Book Africa and the Global Financial Crisis

Download or read book Africa and the Global Financial Crisis written by Reuben Adeolu Alabi and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2011 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume of the African Development Perspectives Yearbook series, the Research Group on African Development Perspectives investigates the impact of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) on economic reform processes in Africa. The analysis is structured in such a way so as to reflect the opportunities and dangers of policy reversals in the face of the GFC. The impact of the crisis on different types and forms of governance in the region is considered. The first question is therefore which macro-economic policy instruments have to be applied in order to overcome the crisis and to continue with sustainable development. The second question is how the GFC has affected Africa's external economic relations and if the path of opening up to the world markets is to be continued. The third question raised is how the crisis has affected social cohesion, impacted poverty alleviation strategies and the achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). All these questions are discussed in the various contributions which comprise general studies and country case studies. The book also looks into the role of international financial institutions during and after the crisis. (Series: African Development Perspectives Yearbook - Vol. 15)

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 15 pages

Download or read book Banking Reforms written by Gabriel Adegbite and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Banking and corporate governance reform is an ongoing phenomenon which has received intense global attention after the 2008 global financial crisis. This is particularly true of Nigeria where banks constitute a dominant position of the financial sector. It has compelled many financial and non-financial regulators in Nigeria such as the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Securities and Exchange Commission to revise the codes of best practices for banks and other public companies overtime with a new single code of corporate governance [the national code of corporate governance] set to be released by the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria. This paper makes a contribution to the existing literature on the state of corporate governance development in the Nigerian banking and non-banking sector, the impacts of the banking regulations and the efforts put in place at ensuring that banks are well governed. It also addresses the issue of compliance, disclosure and harmonisation of codes in Nigeria. It argues that while standards and codes are being enacted and revised by the CBN, the SEC and now FRCN, there is greater need for the Nigerian internal and external environments (such as the socio-political, economic and cultural systems) to support the reforms. There is also need for better enforcement, a renewed transparency and total compliance to the spirit and letter of the code in Nigeria.

Book Reforming the International Financial System for Development

Download or read book Reforming the International Financial System for Development written by Jomo Kwame Sundaram and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-17 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1944 Bretton Woods conference created new institutions for international economic governance. Though flawed, the system led to a golden age in postwar reconstruction, sustained economic growth, job creation, and postcolonial development. Yet financial liberalization since the 1970s has involved deregulation and globalization, which have exacerbated instability, rather than sustained growth. In addition, the failure of Bretton Woods to provide a reserve currency enabled the dollar to fill the void, which has contributed to periodic, massive U.S. trade deficits. Our latest global financial crisis, in which all these weaknesses played a part, underscores how urgently we must reform the international financial system. Prepared for the G24 research program, a consortium of developing countries focused on financial issues, this volume argues that such reforms must be developmental. Chapters review historical trends in global liquidity, financial flows to emerging markets, and the food crisis, identifying the systemic flaws that contributed to the recent downturn. They challenge the effectiveness of recent policy and suggest criteria for regulatory reform, keeping in mind the different circumstances, capacities, and capabilities of various economies. Essays follow ongoing revisions in international banking standards, the improved management of international capital flows, the critical role of the World Trade Organization in liberalizing and globalizing financial services, and the need for international tax cooperation. They also propose new global banking and reserve currency arrangements.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objective - Crises have been a feature of the financial landscape for decades. The current global financial crisis is triggered by events in the United States, and rapidly engulfing the entire globe. Nigerian financial market being one of the emerging global markets have over the last four years witnessed some significant level of progress and stability in the form of recapitalization and consolidation of its financial institutions. These reforms though commendable, yet could not shield the banks and the entire economy from the global financial crisis. This study identifies the trends and implications of the global financial crisis on the Nigerian economy.Methodology/Technique - Descriptive analysis through secondary sources of data employed. A stratified sampling method adopted to select between the two strata that are the strongest and the weakest in terms of capital based. Four organizations were chosen from each stratum making eight banks and the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) as the sample size of the study.Findings - This study identifies the trends and implications of the global financial crisis on the Nigerian economy. It was observed that Nigerian banks are open to global practices and business relationships with foreign banks that are badly affected by the crisis. While investors lose confidence in the Nigerian markets as stocks and oil fall drastically almost daily. This has almost resulted in drastic cut in the foreign capital inflow for the country.Novelty - Based on the above findings the study recommends that Nigerian government should diversify the economy by improving the state of infrastructure, intensify the war against corruption, propose bailout measures for privatized companies and ensure fair and sincere democracy.Type of Paper: Conceptual.

Book Mitigating the impacts of the financial and economic crisis in Africa

Download or read book Mitigating the impacts of the financial and economic crisis in Africa written by A. B. Kamara and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 2009-11-01 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global economic crisis revealed a high fragility of growth in African economies, especially among those that are heavily dependent on commodity export. The fragility and lack of depth in African financial markets has also exposed them to adverse effects of volatility of foreign capital outflows. This calls for an urgent need to design strategies to exploit the full potential of domestic resource mobilization and pooling of resources, as well as a rebalancing of exportled growth strategies.

Book Corporate Governance of Banks and the Banking Reforms in Nigeria

Download or read book Corporate Governance of Banks and the Banking Reforms in Nigeria written by Gabriel Adegbite and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of banks is integral to the development of any nation due to their multiplier effects on the economy at large. This is particularly true of Nigeria where banks have an overwhelmingly dominant position in the financial system. More so, the effects of the global financial crisis on many emerging economies such as Nigeria which have re-echoed the importance of corporate governance have compelled the financial and non-financial regulators such as the central bank of Nigeria and the Securities and Exchange Commission to revise their codes of best practices for the banks and other public companies. This paper makes a contribution to the existing literature on the state of corporate governance development in the Nigerian banking sector, the impacts of the banking regulations and the efforts put in place at ensuring that the banks are well governed. It also addresses the issue on whether the banking reforms carried out by the central bank of Nigeria in relation to governance are enough or adequate for the survival of the Nigerian financial sector in the face of the global challenges. It argues that while standards and codes are being enacted and revised by the CBN and the SEC, there is need for the Nigerian internal and external environments (be it socio-cultural, political, economic, legal, religious etc.) to support the reforms.

Book Economic Reforms and Nigeria s Political Crisis

Download or read book Economic Reforms and Nigeria s Political Crisis written by Rose Umoren and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central thesis of this book challenges the view that Nigeria's economic and politcal crises are functions of a self-imposed paralytic political framework; rather they stem from unfavourably fashioned economic reforms. By extension, the military quashing of the 1998 elections was not the cause, but the trigger of the ensuing political crisis, which was rooted in externally imposed economic strategies. This is supported by a review of official data from the World Bank, and the IMF's interventions and structural adjustment during the period. The conclusions are intended to inform policy-makers and professionals in the search for more focused economic strategies. Futher, the findings can be extrapolated to better inform other structurally adjusted African countries.
