Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gleaner, 1937, Vol. 43: Harvest Issue He was standing on the edge of the marsh, gazing longingly and earnestly across the forbidding morass, excitedly contemplating her. Her gaily bedecked body was barely visible above the densely enshrouding reeds and grasses. How she had gotten there he did not know, but he recognized her and was determined to rescue her. She was truly very beautiful. Without hesitation he hurriedly re moved his shoes, socks and pants, and grimly and fearlessly waded into the slimy ooze. The mud soon enveloped his ankles, his calves, and soon reached his knees. Sticky, foul-smelling stuff as it was, it would have struck fear into the heart of a lesser man and caused him to turn back in. Defeat. But he struggled on, step by step, determined to rescue the gaily bedecked beauty marooned in the marsh. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gleaner, Vol. 43: Founder's Day 1938 The serenade along with the lullaby probably shares the honors as the parent of man's first art: which is music. For years, these simple forms of song were the sum total of man's invented art. But to primitive genius of that memorable age, there was no reason for music, unless it could be useful; no art for art's sake with him. Book Dispatches from the Ebony Tower

Download or read book Dispatches from the Ebony Tower written by Manning Marable and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2001-03-01 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What constitutes black studies and where does this discipline stand at the end of the twentieth century? In this wide-ranging and original volume, Manning Marable—one of the leading scholars of African American history—gathers key materials from contemporary thinkers who interrogate the richly diverse content and multiple meanings of the collective experiences of black folk. Here are numerous voices expressing very different political, cultural, and historical views, from black conservatives, to black separatists, to blacks who advocate radical democratic transformation. Here are topics ranging from race and revolution in Cuba, to the crack epidemic in Harlem, to Afrocentrism and its critics. All of these voices, however, are engaged in some aspect of what Marable sees as the essential triad of the black intellectual tradition: describing the reality of black life and experiences, critiquing racism and stereotypes, or proposing positive steps for the empowerment of black people. Highlights from Dispatches from the Ebony Tower: Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Manning Marable debate the role of activism in black studies. John Hope Franklin reflects on his role as chair of the President's race initiative. Cornel West discusses topics that range from the future of the NAACP through the controversies surrounding Louis Farrakhan and black nationalism to the very question of what "race" means. Amiri Baraka lays out strategies for a radical new curriculum in our schools and universities. Marable's introduction provides a thorough overview of the history and current state of black studies in America.

Book Military Paternalism Labour and the Rideau Canal Project

Download or read book Military Paternalism Labour and the Rideau Canal Project written by Robert W. Passfield and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In studies of the Rideau Canal construction project, Labour historians have focused on the suffering of the canal workers, and have posited that the military deployed troops to suppress labour unrest and were indifferent to the suffering of the workers. This book provides a different perspective through placing the canal project within its natural and physiccal environments, and through taking into account cultural factors in examining the labour as it evolved during the construction of the canal. Within that broader framework, a totally different view emerges with respect to the causes of the suffering experienced by the canal workers, and the role of the military on the canal project. Moreover, the paternalism of Lt. Col. John By is revealed in his efforts to promote the physical, material, and moral well-being of the canal workers. Lastly, the phenomenon of military paternalism is examined further within a Marxist context, and in terms of Anglican toryism and and Lockean liberalism.

Book Harnessing the Power of the Criminal Corpse

Download or read book Harnessing the Power of the Criminal Corpse written by Sarah Tarlow and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-17 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is the culmination of many years of research on what happened to the bodies of executed criminals in the past. Focusing on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it looks at the consequences of the 1752 Murder Act. These criminal bodies had a crucial role in the history of medicine, and the history of crime, and great symbolic resonance in literature and popular culture. Starting with a consideration of the criminal corpse in the medieval and early modern periods, chapters go on to review the histories of criminal justice, of medical history and of gibbeting under the Murder Act, and ends with some discussion of the afterlives of the corpse, in literature, folklore and in contemporary medical ethics. Using sophisticated insights from cultural history, archaeology, literature, philosophy and ethics as well as medical and crime history, this book is a uniquely interdisciplinary take on a fascinating historical phenomenon.
