Download or read book The General History and State of Europe Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Voltaire Voltaire and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The General History and State of Europe, Vol. 2 My method of studying history was calculated for my own use, and not for the public, whom I never intended to trouble with my thoughts on this subject. At length a lady, the ornament of her age and sex, whose extensive genius embraced every subject, had a mind to learn history along with me, though she had conceived as great a dislike to it at first as Father Mallebranche, because, like him, she had great abilities for geometry and metaphysics. "What signifies it," said she, "to a Frenchwoman like me, who live here in a rural retirement, to know that Egil succeeded King Haquin in the kingdom of Sweden or that Ottoman was the son of Ortogrul? With pleasure I have read the Greek and Roman histories; because they exhibited pictures to my mind drawn at full length, which fixed my attention. But I have not been yet able to go through any one large history of our modern nations: for I hardly see any thing in them but confusion, a multitude of trivial events, without any order or connection; a thousand battles no way decisive, and in which I did not even so much as learn the weapons they made use of to destroy one another. I therefore renounced so dry and unprofitable a study, which overloads, without improving the mind." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Historical Geography of Europe Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Edward Augustus Freeman and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Geography of Europe, Vol. 1 of 2 It is now several years since this book was begun. It has been delayed by a crowd of causes, by a temporary loss of strength, by enforced absence from England, by other occupations and interruptions of various kinds. I mention this only because of the effect which I fear it has had on the book itself. It has been impossible to make it, what a book should, if possible, be, the result of one continuous effort. The mere fact that the kindness of the publishers allowed the early part to be printed some years back has, I fear, led to some repetition and even contradiction. A certain change of plan was found unavoidable. It proved impossible to go through the whole volume according to the method of the earlier chapters. Instead of treating Europe as a whole, I found it needful to divide it into several large geographical groups. The result is that each of the later chapters has had to go over again some small amount of ground which had been already gone over in the earlier chapters. In some cases later lights have led to some changes of view or expression. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on History, Second and Concluding Series, Vol. 2 of 3: On the French Revolution I will now proceed to refer to some of the histories and commentaries on the French Revolution, drawn up by actors in the scene, or those who lived at the time. These accounts will present you with the same transactions and topics again and again repeated; but this, as I have mentioned to you, will only impress the leading points of this great subject more and more on your memories. To men of intelligence, to those who mean well, to all who are really interested in the liberties of mankind, and in the best happiness of their country, I consider this portion of the revolutionary story to be most particularly important: such men were, at this period, as I conceive, wanting in caution, in respect for those who had gone before them; were too sanguine, too enthusiastic in their good feelings, too confident in the people. And if these things be so, they ought to operate as an example to others hereafter; to other wise and good men; to other patriots, who must be taught, that it is not sufficient to have good intentions or great talents; that they must have prudence, circumspection, and many other virtues, which those, who engage in revolutions, are too apt to despise. Look, therefore, at the portraits of this singular period, which I am holding up to your view; for this is what I am now doing, while I am quoting from the writings or speeches of those who lived at the time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reign of Charles the Fifth, Vol. 1 of 2 But with respect to the history of foreign states, we must set other bounds to our desire of information. The universal progress of science during the last two centuries, the art of printing, and other obvious causes, have filled Europe with such a multiplicity of histories, and with such vast collections of historical materials, that the term of human life is too short for the study or even the perusal of them. It is necessary, then, not only for those who are called to conduct the affairs of nations, but for such as inquire and reason concerning them, to remain satisfied with a general knowledge of distant events, and to confine their study of history in detail chiefly to that period in which, the several states of Europe having become intimately connected, the operations of one power are so felt by all as to influence their councils and to regulate their measures. Some boundary, then, ought to be fixed, in order to separate these periods. An era should be pointed out, prior to which each country, little connected with those around it, may trace its own history apart; after which. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret Societies of the European Revolution, 1776 1876, Vol. 2 of 2 Two results of great importance in the progress of the European revolution proceeded from the events that occurred at Naples in 1820-21. One was the reorganisation of the Carbonari, consequent upon the publicity given to the system when it had brought about the revolution, and the secresy in which it had hitherto been enveloped was no longer deemed necessary; the other was the extension of the system beyond the Alps. When the Neapolitan revolution had been effected, the Carbonari emerged from their mystery, published their constitution and statutes, and ceased to conceal their patents and their cards of membership.
