He is one of the great masters of history painting, and he occupies a special place in Russian culture. Like Delacroix, he believed that history was not a pretext for nice painting but an inexorable drama with neither culprits nor innocents but rather people driven by invisible forces. He was very knowledgeable about Russian history, and his paintings deal with crucial moments. He sought in historical events the answers to pressing problems of his time. Here is a book about a painter little-known in the West, analysed with understanding by one of the greatest Russian art critics.

Book Operation Snow Owl

    Book Details:
  • Author : E. J. Walden
  • Publisher : Strategic Book Publishing
  • Release : 2010-05
  • ISBN : 1608608840
  • Pages : 593 pages

Download or read book Operation Snow Owl written by E. J. Walden and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1919, Wilhelm von Graffe, a German Naval Officer, witnessed the scuttling of the German High Seas Fleet at Scapa Flow. This crushing defeat pushed him to dedicate his life to returning Germany to its rightful position of power. Years later, prior to World War II, von Graffe came up with a plan to accomplish that goal. Von Graffe's plan centered on the shipping lanes of North America's Great Lakes, areas likely to be an integral part of Great Britain's lifeline since both Canada and the United States would provide abundant supplies to Great Britain's war effort, as they had in the past. Von Graffe clearly saw the advantage to Germany in sabotaging such supply shipments. This project became so secret that only Adolf Hitler and his spymaster, Admiral Canaris, knew the details. However, the possibility for the success of this operation diminished when von Graffe was forced to return to Germany, where he found himself faced with an unexpected dilemma, which tried his honor as both a citizen and a German Officer. E. J. Walden, a World War II veteran, currently lives and enjoys his retirement in Lake Saint Louis, Missouri. His curiosity as to why the Germans did not do more to impede shipments of war materiels from Canada and the United States inspired him to research and write about these shipping hubs. He has written two other works, one occurring during the immediate aftermath of World War II, and the second being a series of depression era stories. Book Edgar Snow

Download or read book Edgar Snow written by John Maxwell Hamilton and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2003-09-25 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edgar Snow (1905--1972) was one of the most notable Western journalists to report on China in both the revolutionary and postrevolutionary periods. He first became famous in the mid-1930s when he broke through a Nationalist blockade and reached the Communists in northwest China. For nearly a decade, no foreign reporter had seen the Communists, who were widely regarded as a ragtag bandit army. Snow took them seriously as a national movement. His reporting in the now-famous book Red Star over China was major news, even to the Chinese, thousands of whom joined the Communists after reading it. It has remained a seminal reference on the early Chinese Communist movement. In this award-winning biography, journalist John Maxwell Hamilton follows Snow from his birth in Kansas City to his rise as a celebrated foreign correspondent for the Saturday Evening Post, his ostracism during the cold war, and his role as a singular journalistic bridge between Communist China and the United States. With a new preface by the author, this revealing portrait of the widely misunderstood Snow firmly establishes him as a model for the kind of committed reporting that is crucial to understanding our interdependent world.

Book Snow Flowers

  • Pages : 452 pages

Download or read book Snow Flowers written by Zahava Szász Stessel and published by Associated University Presse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snow Flowers is a rare study by one of the 1,300 Hungarian Jewish inmates who were "eased out" by the SS to Junkers Company to produce airplane parts in Markkleeberg, Germany. Working conditions and profits shed light on slave labor establishments. Describing prisoners' ways of coping, their spiritual world addresses the question of how it was possible to live in the camp. A recurring theme is the experience of the author and her teenage sister. The 250 French political resistance fighters in the camp shared the death march and the anguish of the Allied bombing. Russian soldiers bent on sexual exploitation were the first disappointment after liberation. Homecoming and life of the survivor are recounted in the concluding chapters. The eight years of research on this book was prompted by the query of a Markkleeberg school teacher. German archival documents, songs, diaries written in the camp, and the testimonies of 110 fellow survivors provide a collective and a personal narrative. The book is part of a traveling exhibit, "The Forgotten Women of Buchenwald." Dr. Stessel is a retired librarian from The New York Public Library.
