Book The Game of British East Africa Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Game of British East Africa Classic Reprint written by C. H. Stigand and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Game of British East Africa Civilisation is advancing with such rapid strides in British East Africa that year by year it becomes more difficult to find and observe game still undisturbed by the sportsman and hunter. Another generation and perhaps there will be little or no opportunities of observing these animals as they existed before the net of civilisation had been drawn round them. It thus behoves anyone who has had the fortune to be thrown much with wild and unsophisticated animals to leave as careful a record as possible of their ways and manners of living while there is still opportunity, and to study them in their natural state. It is this consideration which has induced me to attempt the task of describing the wild life of the country to the best of my ability. I quite realise that I am not specially qualified for the work, and that there are many with greater experience of the country and game than I possess. However, I hope that perhaps in later years, when the lion no longer roars over the plain and the rhino has ceased to wander in the open, that this book, in conjunction with many others of a similar nature, may be of some little value in reconstructing what will then be past natural history. Book The Big Game of Africa Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Big Game of Africa Classic Reprint written by Richard Tjader and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Big Game of Africa This volume is not only a narrative of my own wanderings and experiences in that continent, but is also intended to be a guide book to those many who are interested in the life and habits of the African game animals as well as in the best way of stalking these with either camera or gun. For in the many good books on hunting in the Dark Continent, little or nothing has been said that may help the would-be African big game hunter in the selection of the proper outfit, guns, cameras, curing materials, etc., nor do they give him any definite information as to where, when and how to secure the game he wants, and none of them contains the most necessary introduction to the ki-swahili language, even a slight knowledge of which will prove of immense help to the sportsman when hunting in British East Africa, German East Africa and Uganda. This book is the result of my own experiences and observations during three different expeditions to British East Africa, and con tains the most reliable information I was able to obtain from other sportsmen and professional hunters, as well as from the wild sons of that wonderful game country who, themselves, spend most of their lives roaming around among the Big Game of Africa. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Safari: Big Game Hunting in British East Africa, With Studies in Bird-Life Should the title of this work convey no significance, the fact would show that there yet remains Something new from Africa. That Arabic term Safari has no precise equivalent in our British tongue, yet is in daily use throughout British territories six times larger than the home islands. Hence I venture to introduce it to our common language. Its interpretation will presently become clear to those who read this book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Large Game: And Natural History of South and South-East Africa, From the Journals of the Hon. W. H. Drummond The experiences upon which my book is founded ex tended over a period of some five years, ending in 1872 (though one or two incidents belong to a prior period), during which time, to all intents and purposes, I lived amongst the natives and the game, rarely, except when visiting the colony to dispose of cattle or hides, and to lay in a fresh stock of goods, sleeping under other covering than that of heaven, with the distant muttering of the lion or the mournful howl of the prowling hyena as my lullaby; and I can truthfully say, that the memory of those five years, spent in that wil'd land under the shadow of the Southern Cross, is a very pleasant one. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sport and Travel: Abyssinia and British East Africa IN the following pages I have endeavoured to give some account of three journeys, under taken mainly for the purposes of sport. That circumstances prevented my doing all I wished was unfortunate, but it was both in Abyssinia and in my first trip to East Africa a case of L'homme propose, Dieu dispose. It is difficult in a book consisting of personal experiences to avoid being egotistical, and I hope that I have not erred too flagrantly in this respect. My best thanks are due, firstly, to my com panion, W. F. Whitehouse; to C01. (now Sir) J. L. Harrington, for the permission of King Menelik to travel in Abyssinia; to Capt. Duff, who helped me with a few notes on the construction of the British Agency, to Mr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Portuguese East Africa

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portuguese East Africa: The History, Scenery,& Great Game of Manica and Sofala This book is intended for the traveller, the sportsman, and for him whose delight lies in those scenes of natural unembellished beauty and grandeur which Africa possesses in such profusion and variety. So many are the books constantly published upon this great continent, that my only excuse for adding another to their number is my unwillingness that the large and important territory of which, in the course of the following pages, I have attempted a brief and inadequate description, should longer remain, as it has too long remained, in that condition of partial illumination which is, so to speak, neither light nor darkness; and if, in no matter how small a degree, I have succeeded in directing the attention of those interested in African matters to this interesting and important region, I shall feel that my effort has not been fruitless.
