Book The Future of Same day Delivery

Download or read book The Future of Same day Delivery written by Sunil Chopra and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2012 several retailers, including Amazon and Walmart, experimented with same-day delivery. Home delivery of pizzas had been a very successful model in the United States and had been copied all over the world. In contrast, home delivery attempts by companies like Kozmo and Urbanfetch had failed and both companies went bankrupt. The goal of this case is to build a framework that helps students identify the factors that influence the success or failure of home delivery models. After analyzing and discussing the case, students should be able to: - Build a basic framework identifying supply chain drivers that are influenced by a firm's decision to offer same-day home delivery - Understand the tradeoffs that influence the success of a same-day home delivery model - Identify qualitative factors to be considered when deciding between non-U.S. facility locations, including transportation time variability, consumer perceptions, and cultural differences.

Book The Future of Health care Delivery

Download or read book The Future of Health care Delivery written by Stephen C. Schimpff and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2012 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 100,000 deaths per year in the United States result from preventable medical errors. This figure is about twice the number of people who die in car accidents and five times the number of murder victims annually, and twenty times the number of servicemen and women killed in Iraq and Afghanistan since the start of hostilities in 2001. If you think Americans have the best health-care system in the world, think again. In this deeply researched and controversial book, Dr. Stephen Schimpff explains why our health-care delivery system serves us so poorly, why it costs so much, and why government policy over many decades has not only failed to improve care delivery but has actually made it worse. In the process, he dispels common misconceptions about medicine and health care. The Future of Health-Care Delivery provides timely information and a road map to achieve world-class care delivery, putting health care where it belongs--in the hands of the patient and medical professionals instead of the insurance companies and government.

Book Approximate Dynamic Programming for Dynamic Vehicle Routing

Download or read book Approximate Dynamic Programming for Dynamic Vehicle Routing written by Marlin Wolf Ulmer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-19 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a straightforward overview for every researcher interested in stochastic dynamic vehicle routing problems (SDVRPs). The book is written for both the applied researcher looking for suitable solution approaches for particular problems as well as for the theoretical researcher looking for effective and efficient methods of stochastic dynamic optimization and approximate dynamic programming (ADP). To this end, the book contains two parts. In the first part, the general methodology required for modeling and approaching SDVRPs is presented. It presents adapted and new, general anticipatory methods of ADP tailored to the needs of dynamic vehicle routing. Since stochastic dynamic optimization is often complex and may not always be intuitive on first glance, the author accompanies the ADP-methodology with illustrative examples from the field of SDVRPs. The second part of this book then depicts the application of the theory to a specific SDVRP. The process starts from the real-world application. The author describes a SDVRP with stochastic customer requests often addressed in the literature, and then shows in detail how this problem can be modeled as a Markov decision process and presents several anticipatory solution approaches based on ADP. In an extensive computational study, he shows the advantages of the presented approaches compared to conventional heuristics. To allow deep insights in the functionality of ADP, he presents a comprehensive analysis of the ADP approaches.

Book Modern Approaches for Intelligent Information and Database Systems

Download or read book Modern Approaches for Intelligent Information and Database Systems written by Andrzej Sieminski and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a unique blend of reports on both theoretical models and their applications in the area of Intelligent Information and Database Systems. The reports cover a broad range of research topics, including advanced learning techniques, knowledge engineering, Natural Language Processing (NLP), decision support systems, Internet of things (IoT), computer vision, and tools and techniques for Intelligent Information Systems. They are extended versions of papers presented at the ACIIDS 2018 conference (10th Asian Conference on Intelligent Information and Database Systems), which was held in Dong Hoi City, Vietnam on 19–21 March 2018. What all researchers and students of computer science need is a state-of-the-art report on the latest trends in their respective areas of interest. Over the years, researchers have proposed increasingly complex theoretical models, which provide the theoretical basis for numerous applications. The applications, in turn, have a profound influence on virtually every aspect of human activities, while also allowing us to validate the underlying theoretical concepts.

Download or read book On Demand Culture written by Chuck Tryon and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The movie industry is changing rapidly, due in part to the adoption of digital technologies. Distributors now send films to theaters electronically. Consumers can purchase or rent movies instantly online and then watch them on their high-definition televisions, their laptops, or even their cell phones. Meanwhile, social media technologies allow independent filmmakers to raise money and sell their movies directly to the public. All of these changes contribute to an “on-demand culture,” a shift that is radically altering film culture and contributing to a much more personalized viewing experience. Chuck Tryon offers a compelling introduction to a world in which movies have become digital files. He navigates the complexities of digital delivery to show how new modes of access—online streaming services like YouTube or Netflix, digital downloads at iTunes, the popular Redbox DVD kiosks in grocery stores, and movie theaters offering digital projection of such 3-D movies as Avatar—are redefining how audiences obtain and consume motion picture entertainment. Tryon also tracks the reinvention of independent movies and film festivals by enterprising artists who have built their own fundraising and distribution models online. Unique in its focus on the effects of digital technologies on movie distribution, On-Demand Culture offers a corrective to address the rapid changes in the film industry now that movies are available at the click of a button.

Download or read book Later the Same Day written by Grace Paley and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grace Paley's stature among writers of short fiction was established by her first collection, The Little Disturbances of Man (1959), and reconfirmed with the publication of Enormous Changes at the Last Minute in 1974. This new book, a selection from her work over the past ten years, is appropriately titled Later the Same Day: Paley's concerns, or themes, have changed only as much as life's constants change with the passage of time. Those characters familiar to readers of her previous volumes have grown older but are still deeply involved with their parents, their lovers and friends, and their children--the past, present, and future--and the welfare of the wider community. We meet the neighborhood druggist with his tale of familiar heartbreak and small-time bigotry ("Zagrowsky Tells"); a willful father in Puerto Rico who cannot accept the obvious loss of his child by kidnapping ("In the Garden"); a black woman who mourns the fact that her daughter, "born in good cheer," has become only "busy and broad" ("Lavinia: An Old Story")' a visitor from China whose concern is about the children, how to raise them" (The Expensive Moment:); a craftsman whose beautiful creation is stillborn ("This is a Story about My Friend George, the Toy Inventor"). The seenteen stories in Later the Same Day are marked by Paley's low-keyed humor, her rich but economical use of language, and her seemingly endless capacity for empathy. Their substance--the persistence of human and political concerns, despite practical pressures--subtly overwhelms less important matters.
