Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Future of Our Agriculture It has been the author's lot to see a good deal of such modern methods, which are more particularly interesting in that part of the subject which applies to that important social and economic problem interlaced with the agricultural, namely, that of settling more people on the land and so increasing agricultural production, while providing a larger supply of labour, and creating ampler contentment, happiness and prosperity. The subject matter having been systematically divided under distinct heads, some recurrence to the same practices under different aspects has proved inevitable. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Man Who Works With His Hands: Address of President Roosevelt at the Semi-Centennial Celebration of the Founding of Agricultural Colleges in the United States, at Lansing, Mich., May 31, 1907 There is but one person whose welfare is as vital to the welfare of the whole country as is that of the wage-worker who does manual labor; and that is the tiller of the soil - the farmer. If there is one lesson taught by history it is that the permanent greatness of any State must ultimately depend more upon the character of its country population than upon anything else. No growth of cities no growth of wealth, can make up for a loss in either the number or the character of the farming population. In the United States more than in almost any other country we should realize this and should prize our country population. When this Nation began its independent existence it was as a Nation of farmers. The towns were small and were for the most part mere sea coast trading and fishing ports. The chief industry of the country was agriculture, and the ordinary citizen was in some way connected with it. In every great crisis of the past a peculiar dependence has had to be placed upon the farming population; and this dependence has hitherto been justified. But it can not be justified in the future if agriculture is permitted to sink in the scale as compared with other employments. We can not afford to lose that preeminently typical American, the farmer who owns his own farm. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yearbook of the United States Department of Agriculture In presenting the Yearbook of the Department of Agriculture for 1896 to farmers and others interested in the subject of agriculture, it is hoped that it may, in a measure at least, fulfill whatever expecta tions have been aroused by the two preceding volumes. When the Annual Report of the United States Department of Agriculture first appeared in this form, the hepe was expressed that future numbers of the book would still more fully justify the new departure. It is therefore hoped that no backward step is evidenced in the present volume and that the work may indicate a steady growth toward the ideal which has been continually in mind, but which is as yet so far short of attainment. Book Louisiana and Its Resources

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana and Its Resources: The State of the Future I make not the slightest pretention to literary excellence: this book is what it professes to be, viz: a plain statement of facts, and a guide to Capitalists, Manufacturers, Agriculturists, Mechanics, Laborers, &c., putting before them in as few words as possible the enormous natural wealth of the State, and to cordially invite them from all parts of the Globe to satisfy themselves of the integrity of my statements, by the most rigorous persona examination. To some penny-a-liners I would suggest respectfully, that a perusal of these pages would at least prevent them from repeating the egregious descriptive blunders, which have occasionlly adorned (?) their columns, such reports (penned by persons without any practical knowledge of the South) are mischievous as being misleading. I have quoted from the works of Wm. H. Harris, Ex-Commissioner of Agriculture, and Daniel Dennett, Esq., and the official reports of the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Washington. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical Address Delivered Before the Massachusetts Agricultural College: On the Occasion of Graduating Its First Class, July 19, 1871 Mr. President and Friends of Agriculture. The occasion which has called us together is of no ordinary importance. We meet to commemorate, by the services of this day, the graduation of the first class of students from the first Agricultural College of our own State or of our own New England, an occasion which we believe will be made memorable as the beginning of a new era in the cause of scientific as well as practical agriculture in our good old Commonwealth. By a merciful Providence I stand before you to-day as the senior member of the Board of Trustees, and I propose, in the discharge of the duty assigned me, to record for the benefit of those who may come after us, in as brief a manner as possible, the history and progress of efforts for the advancement of agricultural science in our land, and especially of those which have culminated in the establishment of the Massachusetts Agricultural College.
