Book The Fiscal and Economic Effects of Federal Credit Assistance Programs

Download or read book The Fiscal and Economic Effects of Federal Credit Assistance Programs written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1990-10-01 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While federal credit programs are varied in form, their fiscal and economic effects arise primarily from the same source—each program’s subsidy component. Recent credit reform proposals would make control of credit subsidies the primary focus of budgetary efforts. By subjecting these subsidies to annual appropriations, the Government would gain more effective means to control the long-run fiscal effects of credit programs. Such reforms also would represent an important first step in improving their economic effects by eliminating unintended subsidies. However, many high subsidy-rate programs appear to have a significant effect on the allocation of credit without yielding clearcut efficiency gains.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ippolito examines the least publicized source of our current fiscal troubles--federal credit programs. Since the 1970s these programs (primary components of the federal policy in such areas as housing, agriculture, education, and international affairs) have grown dramatically, but neither the growth nor their costs have been reflected in the budget. The true costs are not tangible and direct, but these programs can affect investment, economic growth, and productivity. Originally published 1984. Book The Congress Should Control Federal Credit Programs to Promote Economic Stabilization

Download or read book The Congress Should Control Federal Credit Programs to Promote Economic Stabilization written by GENERAL ACCOUNTING OFFICE WASHINGTON DC PROGRAM ANALYSIS DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Federal credit assistance programs have contributed little to U.S. economic stability since 1960. The current rate of direct and guaranteed loan flows will exceed $70 billion annually in fiscal 1981. Recently, the Congress and the Administration have proposed a credit budget to limit the rapid growth of Federal credit. GAO demonstrates in this report that the best point of program control is the amount of the interest rate subsidy. Controlling subsidy levels rather than program activity levels would allocate credit efficiently and would, at the same time, lead to Federal credit flows that would contribute to the economic stabilization goals of the Federal Government.

Book The Financial Crisis Inquiry Report

Download or read book The Financial Crisis Inquiry Report written by Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Financial Crisis Inquiry Report, published by the U.S. Government and the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission in early 2011, is the official government report on the United States financial collapse and the review of major financial institutions that bankrupted and failed, or would have without help from the government. The commission and the report were implemented after Congress passed an act in 2009 to review and prevent fraudulent activity. The report details, among other things, the periods before, during, and after the crisis, what led up to it, and analyses of subprime mortgage lending, credit expansion and banking policies, the collapse of companies like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and the federal bailouts of Lehman and AIG. It also discusses the aftermath of the fallout and our current state. This report should be of interest to anyone concerned about the financial situation in the U.S. and around the world.THE FINANCIAL CRISIS INQUIRY COMMISSION is an independent, bi-partisan, government-appointed panel of 10 people that was created to "examine the causes, domestic and global, of the current financial and economic crisis in the United States." It was established as part of the Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act of 2009. The commission consisted of private citizens with expertise in economics and finance, banking, housing, market regulation, and consumer protection. They examined and reported on "the collapse of major financial institutions that failed or would have failed if not for exceptional assistance from the government."News Dissector DANNY SCHECHTER is a journalist, blogger and filmmaker. Book Europe s Crisis Europe s Future

Download or read book Europe s Crisis Europe s Future written by Kemal Dervis and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2014-05-05 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can the eurozone’s emergence from crisis turn into a real economic recovery and a new vision for Europe’s future? Or is Europe heading for a “lost decade” in terms of growth and a rise in old style nationalism? Kemal Derviş and Jacques Mistral have assembled an international group of economic analysts who provide perspectives on the most audacious supranational governance experiment in history. Will the crisis mark the end of the dream of “ever closer union” or lead to a renewed impetus to integrate, perhaps taking novel forms? Among the key issues explored are the · Onset, evolution, and ramifications of the euro crisis from the perspective of three countries especially hard hit—Greece, Italy, and Spain. · Concerns, priorities, and issues in France and Germany, the couple that has so far always driven European integration. · Effects and lessons in two key policy areas: banking union and social policies. The volume concludes with a possible renewed vision for the EU in the 2020s, including much greater political integration but where some countries may keep their national currencies and share less of their sovereignty. It is a vision of two Europes within one, ready for the twenty-first century.

Book Expansionary Austerity New International Evidence

Download or read book Expansionary Austerity New International Evidence written by Mr.Daniel Leigh and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the short-term effects of fiscal consolidation on economic activity in OECD economies. We examine the historical record, including Budget Speeches and IMFdocuments, to identify changes in fiscal policy motivated by a desire to reduce the budget deficit and not by responding to prospective economic conditions. Using this new dataset, our estimates suggest fiscal consolidation has contractionary effects on private domestic demand and GDP. By contrast, estimates based on conventional measures of the fiscal policy stance used in the literature support the expansionary fiscal contractions hypothesis but appear to be biased toward overstating expansionary effects.
