Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Minister of the Dutch Reformed Church in the United States There is, however, in the letter itself abundant intrinsic evidence of its authenticity. The national ity of the first adventurers, Walloons as well as Dutch; the place of the former residence in Europe of the Governor, Minuit; the war between the Mohawks and the Mohicans, are all stated inciden tally in such a manner, that, being at the same time consistent with the facts known from other sources they leave no reasonable ground for doubt, even without the recognition of the ministry of Mr. Michaelius in new-netherland by the note of registrar in the Acid Classz'calz'a, of its truth. Download or read book History of the Reformed Church in the United States written by James I. Good and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformed Church in the United States: 1725-1792 The present volume is the culmination of years of search. The author's previous volumes on the history of the Reformed Church of Germany were gathered in seeking to find the mater ial for this volume. In 1893, at the suggestion of Rev. Dr. Corwin, the distinguished historian of the Dutch Reformed Church, the author was led to write to Amsterdam to know what records of the German Reformed Church in this country were there. But the price demanded for copying them was so high that the matter was dropped. In 1895 the author visited Amsterdam and arranged to have the Amsterdam correspon dence Copied, but was somewhat disappointed at getting only two of the missing coetus' minutes. In 1896, at the suggestion of Mr. Henry S. Dotterer, of Philadelphia, he visited the archives at the Hague, and there found the m1ss1ng coetus' minutes, together with a multitude of other correspondence. As far as he knows he was the first minister of our denomina tion to see these treasures at Amsterdam and also at the Hague. Afterward with the aid of his esteemed colleague, Rev. Prof. W. J. Hinke, he was able to get these manuscripts Copied. The same kind of search was made in Switzerland, Germany and England with surprising results, until we can reasonably say that most of the early history of our Church is clear. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of the Rev. Peter Labagh, D.D: With Notices of the History of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church in North America "He stands in the desk, that grave old man, With an eye still bright, though his cheek is wan, And his long white locks are backward rolled From his noble brow of classic mould, And his form, though bent by the weight of years, Somewhat of its primal beauty wears. He opens the page of the Sacred Word; Not a whisper, nor low nor loud, is heard; Even folly assumes a serious look, As he readeth the words of the Holy Book; And the thoughtless and gay grow reverent there As he opens his lips in fervent prayer. He stands as the grave old prophet stood, Proclaiming the truth of the living God; Pouring reproof on the ears of men Whose hearts are at ease in their folly and sin, With a challenge of guilt still unforgiven To the soul unfitted, unmeet for heaven. Oh, who can but honor that good old man, As he neareth his threescore years and ten, Who hath made it the work of his life to bless Our world in its woe and wiekedness, Still guiding the few, who were wont to stray In the paths of sin, to the narrow way? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformed Protestant Dutch Church in Philadelphia: An Historical Discourse The principles and illustrations of the preliminary discussion, may at least, prove encouraging to those who are engaged in the good, but arduous and often heart-trying work of building up new churches. And if these suggestions should help any reader to take proper scriptural views of the high vocation of even the feeblest Church of Christ, it will not be labour in vain. With these remarks, the discourse is committed to the press, in the hope that it may subserve the in terests of the Master's kingdom, and stimulateus all to a nobler and more effective service. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of the Reformed Dutch Church for 1827, Vol. 1 It must also have struck every observer that a very remarkable change, in the mode of conveying knowledge, by the learned, has attended, or rather has preceded this happy condition of things. In the centuries that are past, the learned never thought of addressing themselves to the vulgar - as they called the operative class of the com munity; or indeed the great mass of the people. They wrote folios and' quartos, and these folios and quartos were addressed only to the learned.' Their contents were not designed for the great body of the people.
