Download or read book The Female Athlete Triad in Collegiate Athletes and Non athlete Undergraduate Students at a Division III University written by Andrea R. Cook and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of the female athlete triad (disordered eating, amenorrhea, and low bone mineral density) in athletes and nonathletes and to determine if there was a difference between the two groups at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. The study consisted of 24 student athletes and 26 nonathlete students who completed a survey on disordered eating (Eating Disorder Inventory-3) and menstrual history. Also their height, weight and bone density (heel bone test) were recorded at the Nutrition Assessment Lab at UW-Stout. The study determined that 16.7% (n=4) of athletes and 11.5% (n=3) of nonathletes had both disordered eating and amenorrhea with no statistical significance between the groups. There were no participants in either group who had low bone mineral density when a t-score of -2.0 was used. In conclusion, the findings show that there were no cases of the complete female athlete triad among the athletes and nonathletes studied; however there are signs of the female athlete triad starting to form in both athletes and non-athletes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book of its kind to focus solely on the female athlete triad - its origins, its recognition, and most importantly, its management. Since the symptoms themselves cover a range of medical specialties, chapters are written by experts in a number of relevant fields - sports medicine, orthopedics, endocrinology, and pediatrics - with an eye toward overall care of the young female athlete. Additionally, each chapter includes suggestions on how to educate and communicate with young athletes and their parents, as well as trainers and coaches, on how to manage the illness outside of the direct clinical setting. The female athlete triad is often seen in sports where low body weight is emphasized, such as gymnastics, figure skating, and running, though it can appear in any sport or activity. The interrelated symptoms - eating disorders, amenorrhea, and low bone mass - exist on a spectrum of severity and are serious and potentially life-threatening if not properly treated. Psychological problems, in addition to medical ones, are not uncommon. The Female Athlete Triad: A Clinical Guide discusses all of these areas for a well-rounded and in-depth approach to the phenomenon and will be a useful reference for any clinician working with female athletes across the lifespan.

Book Risk Factors for the Female Athlete Triad in College age Athletes Compared to Non athletes

Download or read book Risk Factors for the Female Athlete Triad in College age Athletes Compared to Non athletes written by Micaela Miller and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Female Athlete Triad (Triad) is the three interrelated conditions of low energy availability with or without disordered eating, menstrual irregularity or amenorrhea, and osteoporosis, and is a health concern that affects active women of all ages who participate in physical activity. Although associations have been found between the individual components of the Triad, research is still limited on all Triad components occurring simultaneously in athletes. In addition, research on the college-age female population is currently limited. The purpose of this study was to examine Triad risk factors in the college-age female athlete population compared to the non-athlete population, specifically focusing on the risk factor of inadequate energy availably and eating disorders. A non-experimental cross-sectional study design was conducted during the spring semester to assess presence of the Triad risk factors among females attending a Midwestern university. A total for 1537 female students participated in this study. An online survey composed of the LEAF-Q questionnaire and the EAT-26 questionnaire was used to assess the risk factors for the Female Athlete Triad and risk for eating disorders, respectively. Independent samples t-tests and chi square tests were used to analyze differences in risk for low energy availability and risk for eating disorders between the two groups of participants. There were no significant differences between the athlete and non-athlete groups, in risk for the Female Athlete Triad as measured by the mean LEAF-Q scores. However, within the athlete group, associations were found in number of training days, age of first menstrual period, and amenorrhea for three consecutive months. Results showed no significant (p =0.74) differences between athlete and non-athlete groups in risk for eating disorders using mean EAT-26 scores. More non-athletes (20%) were associated with avoiding foods with carbohydrate content, while a higher number of athletes (4%) were associated with having the impulse to vomit after meals. Additionally, a significant (p = 0.01) difference was found between the athlete and non-athlete groups in their response to the question, "Gone on eating binges where you feel that you may not be able to stop?" Overall, there were no significance (p = 0.07) differences between the number of athletes who were considered at risk for both inadequate energy intake and an eating disorder compared to non-athletes. Associations between athletes and the Female Athlete Triad are evident, but the Triad components are not yet fully understood. Results of this study suggest a need for screening and monitoring female athletes for Triad risk factors.

Book Collegiate Coaches Knowledge of the Female Athlete Triad

Download or read book Collegiate Coaches Knowledge of the Female Athlete Triad written by Pamela L. Findlay and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Introduction: The female athlete triad is characterized by disordered eating, menstrual dysfunction, and low bone mineral density (BMD). The triad affects many active females and can lead to long-term health problems if left untreated. Because collegiate athletes are especially susceptible to the triad, it is recommended that collegiate coaches be aware of prevention strategies, risk factors, symptoms, health consequences, and treatment procedures associated with the triad. The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of knowledge that NCAA Division II head coaches of female sports (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, volleyball) have regarding the female athlete triad. Methods: A 27-item survey was administered through an online survey service to all NCAA Division II head coaches of the most highly sponsored female sports. The survey included 15 statements about the triad to be characterized as either true of false. Coaches earned one point for each statement that was correctly identified as true or false to determine their knowledge score on a 15-point scale. The knowledge scores were compared by coaches' sex (male, female), sport type (lean, non-lean, both), and experience (limited, moderate, considerable). A 2 x 3 x 3 ANOVA was used to analyze these independent variables. Results: General knowledge of the triad among coaches appeared to be at a high level, but knowledge of its signs and symptoms was limited. Male and female coaches had similar knowledge scores. Coaches of lean sports had significantly higher knowledge scores than coaches of non-lean sports. Coaches with moderate experience had significantly greater knowledge scores that inexperienced coaches. Discussion and Conclusion: Regular, detailed education for coaches on the triad with an emphasis on recognizing symptoms is recommended. To ensure full comprehension, coaches should also be tested regularly on relevant material"--Abstract.

Book Food Nutrition and Sports Performance III

Download or read book Food Nutrition and Sports Performance III written by Ronald J. Maughan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As sport has become more professionalised over the last thirty years, so the role of nutrition in promoting health and performance has become ever more important to athletes who search for the extra edge to succeed in their respective sports. With the expansion in the provision of medical and scientific support services in elite sport, those who advise athletes have had to become adept at identifying those dietary strategies that will help them to outperform their competitors. This book is structured in two parts. The first analyses the science that underpins the nutritional goals of athletes, with a focus on the implications for athletes during training, competition and recovery. The second looks more closely at the practical implications for different sport categories, i.e. those that focus on strength, power or endurance, and on weight category sports, team sports and winter sports. This volume will be of value to sports dieticians and nutritionists and others involved in the care and support of athletes, as well as to those who take an interest in the subject of sport nutrition and competitive performance. Coaches and athletes will also find much of interest here. This book is based on the proceedings of the third in a series of Consensus Conferences in Sports Nutrition organised under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee. It was published as a special issue of the Journal of Sports Sciences.

Book The Prevalence of the Female Athlete Triad

Download or read book The Prevalence of the Female Athlete Triad written by Kylie Ameres and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Female Athlete Triad (FAT) is characterized by three individualized disorders that are present at the same time. Low energy availability with or without disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis are the three components that make up the Female Athlete Triad. The competitive nature and extreme exercise expenditure of female athletes at the Division 1 level, increases their risk of experiencing the components of the Female Athlete Triad. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of the Female Athlete Triad in NCAA Division 1 female athletes. A total of 100 participants were chosen from various sports through Gardner-Webb University athletics. Each participant that met the inclusion criteria filled out an informed consent form before completing the surveys. The participants were asked questions about eating habits, menstruation and history of stress fracture. The results were evaluated with two separate analyses. The first was a chi-squared test was used to assess the different proportions risk factors associated with all of the participants. The second was used to evaluate each risk factor for each component of the Female Athlete Triad (the three questionnaires) as separate variables. It is hypothesized that NCAA Division 1 female athletes are at an increased risk of developing at least one, if not all components of the Female Athlete Triad.

Book The Prevalence of the Components of the Female Athlete Triad in College Aged Females

Download or read book The Prevalence of the Components of the Female Athlete Triad in College Aged Females written by Jessica K. Davis and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to observe if any component or combination of components of the Female Athlete Triad existed in active college aged females. Thirtyfive college aged females who were moderately active and not using any oral contraceptives participated in this study. All participants recorded their physical activity for three days and nutrient intake for 24 hours in order to obtain energy expenditure and intake. In addition, questions concerning their menstrual cycle history were also asked. Finally, a DEXA scan was used to obtain bone mineral density and body composition. Frequencies of each component of the triad were tallied and showed none of the participants met the criteria for all three of the components. Only one participant showed signs for low energy availability and irregular menstrual cycles. In addition, no other combination of the components existed. Overall, our results do not suggest that physically active college aged females are at risk for the Female Athlete Triad.
