Nearly 800 artists employed by the Federal Art Project, one of several jobs programs for artists of the period, made 239,000 prints, which were distributed to tax-supported institutions across the United States. And it was prints, more than any other government media, that Project participants described as "democratic." I argue in this thesis that an examination of FAP prints and the language surrounding them provides unique insights into contemporary discourse about the meanings of and prospects for American democracy.
