Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book, winner of the Jerwood Award from the Royal Society of Literature, a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice, and named a Book of the Year by the Telegraph, Spectator, Observer, and BBC History Magazine, this bold new history of the rise of Christianity shows how its radical followers helped to annihilate Greek and Roman civilizations. The Darkening Age is the largely unknown story of how a militant religion deliberately attacked and suppressed the teachings of the Classical world, ushering in centuries of unquestioning adherence to "one true faith." Despite the long-held notion that the early Christians were meek and mild, going to their martyrs' deaths singing hymns of love and praise, the truth, as Catherine Nixey reveals, is very different. Far from being meek and mild, they were violent, ruthless, and fundamentally intolerant. Unlike the polytheistic world, in which the addition of one new religion made no fundamental difference to the old ones, this new ideology stated not only that it was the way, the truth, and the light but that, by extension, every single other way was wrong and had to be destroyed. From the first century to the sixth, those who didn't fall into step with its beliefs were pursued in every possible way: social, legal, financial, and physical. Their altars were upturned and their temples demolished, their statues hacked to pieces, and their priests killed. It was an annihilation. Authoritative, vividly written, and utterly compelling, this is a remarkable debut from a brilliant young historian.

Book Rome and the Early Christians

Download or read book Rome and the Early Christians written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rome and the Early Christians: Being Letters of Lucius M. Piso, From Rome to Fausta the Daughter of Gracchus at Palmyra The present work, which appeared originally in Boston, in the United States of America, in 1538, is designed as a sequel to "Letters from Palmyra" by the same author, and has been executed with equal good taste and fidelity. Speaking of "Rome in the Third Century," a writer in the North American Review makes the following observations regarding it: - "The subject of the present work is one of a deeper moral interest [than Palmyra], but of less variety in the incidents, and less picturesqueness in the colouring. In its general outlines, the subject has also been more or less successfully treated by other authors. The persecutions of the early Christians, under the Roman emperors, have been described by the pens of both historians and novelists; their sufferings, their heroic endurance, and their purity of life, have become familiar to all classes of readers. So far, then, our author has entered upon already trodden ground. But in two or three important particulars, he has given. us highly original pictures. Others have delineated the early Christians too much according to their own peculiar and sectarian opinion. In this work, the primitive form and simplicity of our religion are kept steadily in view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rome and the Early Christians: Being Letters of Lucius M. Piso, From Rome to Fausta the Daughter of Gracchus at Palmyra My object is an humbler, but perhaps also a more useful one. It is to collect and arrange, in their proper order, such of the letters of the most noble lucius manlius piso as shall throw most light upon his character and times, supplying all defects of incident, and filling up all chasms that may occur, out of the knowledge Which, more exactly than any one else, I have been able to gather concerning all that relates to the distinguished family of the Pisos, after its connection with the more distinguished one still of the Queen of Palmyra. Book Palmyra

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul Veyne
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2018-10-05
  • ISBN : 022660005X
  • Pages : 111 pages

Download or read book Palmyra written by Paul Veyne and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located northeast of Damascus, in an oasis surrounded by palms and two mountain ranges, the ancient city of Palmyra has the aura of myth. According to the Bible, the city was built by Solomon. Regardless of its actual origins, it was an influential city, serving for centuries as a caravan stop for those crossing the Syrian Desert. It became a Roman province under Tiberius and served as the most powerful commercial center in the Middle East between the first and the third centuries CE. But when the citizens of Palmyra tried to break away from Rome, they were defeated, marking the end of the city’s prosperity. The magnificent monuments from that earlier era of wealth, a resplendent blend of Greco-Roman architecture and local influences, stretched over miles and were among the most significant buildings of the ancient world—until the arrival of ISIS. In 2015, ISIS fought to gain control of the area because it was home to a prison where many members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood had been held, and ISIS went on to systematically destroy the city and murder many of its inhabitants, including the archaeologist Khaled al-Asaad, the antiquities director of Palymra. In this concise and elegiac book, Paul Veyne, one of Palymra’s most important experts, offers a beautiful and moving look at the history of this significant lost city and why it was—and still is—important. Today, we can appreciate the majesty of Palmyra only through its pictures and stories, and this book offers a beautifully illustrated memorial that also serves as a lasting guide to a cultural treasure.
