These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside The Fairy Ring: Look inside the book: 'Well, all I know about him is that he lives in the castle that lies East o' the sun and West o' the moon, and thither you'll come, late or never; but still you may have the loan of my horse, and on him you can ride to my next neighbor. ...'Well,' said the South Wind, 'you needn't talk like that, for here I am, your brother, the South Wind, and here is the lassie who ought to have had the Prince who dwells at the castle that lies East o' the sun and West o' the moon, and now she wants to know if you were ever there, and can tell her the way, for she would be so glad to find it again.' ...But they weren't very far from land, and the North Wind had still so much strength in him that he managed to throw her upon the shore under the windows of the castle which lay East o' the sun and West o' the moon; but then he was so weak and worn out that he had to stay there and rest for many days before he was fit to return home. About Various Various, the Author: Nora Archibald Smith (1859 – 1934) was an American children's author of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and sister of Kate Douglas Wiggin. ...Nora then went on to become the superintendent of the free kindergarten on Silver Street and later to take over the running of the California Kindergarten Training School in 1889.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Step into fairyland with William Shakespeare, Robert Graves, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and a host of other classic poets. A rich combination of enchanting verse and magical colour illustrations make this a truly unusual and attractive book for younger children. The easy and accessible poems - all of them written by major literary figures - share a common theme: fairies and fairyland. Ingenious paper engineering produces illustrated images that change in their details as kids turn the pages. For example, a morning woodland scene becomes a moonlit fairy party when the gatefold is opened. These changing magic windows add an extra touch of enchantment to verses meant to be read aloud, to be learned, and to be treasured by even the youngest audience.

Book The Fairy Ring

Download or read book The Fairy Ring written by Mary Losure and published by Candlewick Press. This book was released on 2012-03-27 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enchanting true story of a girl who saw fairies, and another with a gift for art, who concocted a story to stay out of trouble and ended up fooling the world. Frances was nine when she first saw the fairies. They were tiny men, dressed all in green. Nobody but Frances saw them, so her cousin Elsie painted paper fairies and took photographs of them “dancing” around Frances to make the grown-ups stop teasing. The girls promised each other they would never, ever tell that the photos weren’t real. But how were Frances and Elsie supposed to know that their photographs would fall into the hands of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? And who would have dreamed that the man who created the famous detective Sherlock Holmes believed ardently in fairies — and wanted very much to see one? Mary Losure presents this enthralling true story as a fanciful narrative featuring the original Cottingley fairy photos and previously unpublished drawings and images from the family’s archives. A delight for everyone with a fondness for fairies, and for anyone who has ever started something that spun out of control. Back matter includes source notes and a bibliography.

Book Old Hungarian Fairy Tales

Download or read book Old Hungarian Fairy Tales written by Baroness Orczy and published by E-Kitap Projesi & Cheapest Books. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THERE lies before me, as I write, a quaint old book; from this little book—torn and soiled, its edges all gone—nearly all the stories in this volume are drawn. In their earliest childhood Hungarian children hear the story of "Forget-me-Not" (Nfelejts), the history of the "Twin Hunchbacks" (A Rét Törpe), and the doings of the wicked Sultana in the "Magic Cat" (A Büvos Macska.) In my little book is the shell of these stories told simply and in few words. Who was the originator of them? I do not think any one knows, for I have found in many instances the same incidents occurring in the fairy tales of most nations. A modified form of the vain fairy Narcissa is revived in "Little Snow White," and "Riquet with the Tuft" has, if I mistake not, an incident similar to that in "The Twin Hunchbacks." But then again, who has ever traced the origin of all the proverbs and jokes that exist, and have existed for generations, in two score or more Eastern and Western, Latin, Teutonic, or Slavonic languages? Old Hungarian legends, just like old Hungarian music, have to the national mind no palpable origin, though Jókay or Gaal have rewritten the former and Liszt or Brahms have familiarized the world with the latter. The following little collection has helped me in my childhood to pass many pleasant hours, so I now give them to my little English readers—embellished by many drawings—in the hope that they may derive as much pleasure from this little volume of magic and adventure as I did from my old torn copy of "Népmesék."

Book PUCK OF POOK S HILL With Original Illustrations

Download or read book PUCK OF POOK S HILL With Original Illustrations written by Rudyard Kipling and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated eBook edition of "Puck of Pook's Hill " has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Puck of Pook's Hill is a fantasy book, containing a series of short stories set in different periods of English history. It can count both as historical fantasy - since some of the stories told of the past have clear magical elements, and as contemporary fantasy - since it depicts a magical being active and practicing his magic in the England of the early 1900s when the book was written. The stories are all narrated to two children living near Burwash, in the area of Kipling's own house Bateman's, by people magically plucked out of history by the elf Puck, or told by Puck himself. (Puck, who refers to himself as "the oldest Old Thing in England", is better known as a character in William Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream.) The genres of particular stories range from authentic historical novella (A Centurion of the Thirtieth, On the Great Wall) to children's fantasy (Dymchurch Flit). Each story is bracketed by a poem which relates in some manner to the theme or subject of the story. Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist. He wrote tales and poems of British soldiers in India and stories for children. He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children's books are classics of children's literature; and one critic described his work as exhibiting "a versatile and luminous narrative gift".
