Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empirical Studies in Institutional Change is a collection of nine empirical studies by fourteen scholars. Dealing with issues ranging from the evolution of secure markets in seventeenth-century England to the origins of property rights in airport slots in modern America, the contributors analyse institutions and institutional change in various parts of the world and at various periods of time. The volume is a contribution to the new economics of institutions, which emphasises the role of transaction costs and property rights in shaping incentives and results in the economic arena. To make the papers accessible to a wide audience, including students of economics and other social sciences, the editors have written an introduction to each study and added three theoretical essays to the volume, including Douglass North's Nobel Prize address, which reflect their collective views as to the present status of institutional analysis and where it is headed.

Book Economics of Unconventional Shale Gas Development

Download or read book Economics of Unconventional Shale Gas Development written by William E. Hefley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-03 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the economics and related impacts of unconventional shale gas development. While focusing on the Marcellus and Utica Shales in the Mid-Atlantic region, additional insights from other regions are included to provide a broader view of these issues. Shale gas development in recent years has changed the energy discussion in the US, as existing reserves of natural gas coupled with horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing make exploitation of these reserves economically feasible. The importance of natural gas is seen as likely to continue to expand over the coming years, and is expected to increase even further with environmental considerations, such as greenhouse gas emissions. Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing producing natural gas from deposits such as the Marcellus Shale is making the US a net producer of natural gas. Previous studies have examined the economic impact of exploration and production in the region. Other studies have addressed legal, environmental, biodiversity, and public health impacts of unconventional shale development. This is the first volume to focus solely on the economics and related financial impacts of this development. This book not only fills the research gap, but also provides information that policy makers and the public need to better understand this pressing issue.

Book Evolutionary Tax Reform in Emerging Economies

Download or read book Evolutionary Tax Reform in Emerging Economies written by Robert F. Conrad and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolutionary Tax Reform in Emerging Economies: an income-based approach provides one approach to tax reform in emerging economies. Conrad describes the context for tax reform in these economies and outlines the “Standard Approach” to tax reform, an approach that is critically evaluated. Emphasis is placed on revenue generation given to economic efficiency considerations and constraints, institutional and economic, that change through time, and the approach of the work is based on two main elements: policy, for all tax instruments, developed with the individual as the taxpayer, and policy implemented via the use of withholding taxes (advanced taxes), to the extent possible, and via the use of withholding agents, Advanced Payment Agents (APA's). Evolutionary Tax Reform in Emerging Economies examines APAs, direct tax (income tax), and VAT, excises, and tariffs, and discusses topics such as how the base of each tax is defined, how the base might change over time, how APAs are used to collect advanced payments, and how to preserve excise tax collection at the point of production (or import).
