This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Long Island a Story of Land and Sea The writer of the present pages is not a Long Islander. It is with some hesitation, therefore, that he presents a work of this nature to people whose lives have been spent in that beautiful region. The study grew out of a problem that arose in a seminary given by Dr. Isaiah Bowman, when Assistant Professor of Geography in Yale University. Professor Max Farrand suggested that the problem be worked into a doctors dissertation. Under the supervision of these two men the dissertation was brought to completion. Since the time of its submission to the faculty of the Yale Graduate School, the work has been completely revised. My thanks are due, not only to the two men who with great generosity of time and suggestion saw the study through its early stages, but to the authorities of the Yale University Library, the New York Public Library, and the Long Island Historical Society. Mr. H.V. Smith kindly allowed me to use notes that he had collected on Long Island history. Professors Charles M.Andrews and Allen Johnson have made many useful suggestions. Finally, I wish to acknowledge the invaluable help rendered by my wife, whose criticism, encouragement, and practical assistance in the completion of the manuscript and reading of proof have played a large part in making possible the publication of this volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Long Island: From Its Discovery and Settlement to the Present Time IN collecting materials for the History Of Long Island, the compiler has availed himself Of every source Of authentic information to render the work both use ful and interesting; with what success must be left to the consideration Of the reader. He has avoided no reasonable labor or expense to make his publication worthy Of approbation, although he has failed to satisfy himself in accomplishing all that he anticipated on first setting out. Beauty Of style and elegance Of description were not among the primary Objects of the compiler, his principal aim being to present a correct and full account Of Long Island, constituting a valuable repository Of historical and statistical information. Had he anticipated the labor and responsibility he was about to assume, with the obstacles to be encountered in his progress, he would most likely have abandoned the undertaking, even after a large mass of material had been accumulated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than five centuries, the waterways surrounding Long Island have profoundly shaped its history. Familiar subjects of lighthouses, shipwrecks and whaling are found alongside oft-forgotten oddities such as Pan-American flying boats landing in Manhasset Bay in the early days of transatlantic flight. From the British blockade and skirmishes during the American Revolution to the sinking of merchant vessels by Germany in World War II, the sea brought wars to these shores. By the later part of the 20th century, Gold Coast millionaires commuted in high-speed yachts to Manhattan offices as the island's wealth grew. Historian Bill Bleyer reveals Long Island's nautical bonds from the Native Americans to current efforts to preserve the region's maritime heritage.
