Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like other volumes in this series, Ancient History from Coins demystifies a specialism, introducing students (from first year upwards) to the techniques, methods, problems and advantages of using coins to do ancient history. Coins are a fertile source of information for the ancient historian; yet too often historians are uneasy about using them as evidence because of the special problems attaching to their interpretation. The world of numismatics is not always easy for the non-specialist to penetrate or understand with confidence. Dr Howgego describes and anlyses the main contributions the study of coins can make to ancient history, showing shows through numerous examples how the character, patterns and behaviour of coinage bear on major historical themes. Topics range from state finance and economic policy to imperial domination and political propaganda through coins types. The period covered by the book is from the invention of coinage (ca 600BC) to AD 400.
Download or read book The Evolution of Coinage Classic Reprint written by George MacDonald and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Coinage This manual aims at dealing with only one aspect of a very large subject. Nevertheless the material had to be sought in many quarters. It would thus be impossible within the limits of a preface to indicate the extent of my indebtedness to the labours of others. Nor do I propose to attempt it. I trust, however, that the brief bibliography, while serving the purpose for which it is primarily intended, may at the same time be accepted as providing at least a bare record of the obligations of which I am more immediately conscious. Here and there, particularly in Chapter V, I have drawn somewhat freely upon my own book on Coin Types. Mr. G. F. Hill, the Keeper of Coins in the British Museum, has given me valuable advice and assistance. He even had the patience to go through the manuscript, and both he and his colleague, Mr John Allan, were good enough to read the proofs. Download or read book A History of Gold and Money 1450 to 1920 written by Pierre Vilar and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of human history, the motive force behind war, conquest, social conflict and world exploration has been the drive to acquire gold. From the ancient world of Croesus to the wealthy dynasties of Renaissance Italy, from the earliest European explorations into Africa, America, and Asia to the gold rushes of the nineteenth century and the banking crises that lay beyond them, Pierre Vilar depicts the awesome power of avarice to structure the world in which we live. The insidious power of gold and money is the subject of this enlightening and entertaining history. The age of exploration brought an influx of treasure into Western Europe, prompting disputes between theologians and early economists over the causes of inflation in the sixteenth century. In time, American silver distorted metropolitan Spanish society beyond recognition. Vilar goes on to examine the roots of the modern banking and financial systems in institutions founded in Holland, England and France during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. And in the nineteenth century, the gold rushes of Australia, California and South Africa generated new modifications in the international monetary system. Vilar concludes the story of these developments with a discussion of the crisis of the 1920s that, in the wake of the world credit crash of 2008, is more pertinent than ever. A History of Gold and Money provides a unique work of synthesis on the role of money in modern economic history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature and Uses of Money and Mixed Currency: With a History of the Wickaboag Bank N 0 person produces everything he wishes to consume. Even in savage life, one man can procure fish, another venison most advantageously, and they will accordingly wish to exchange pro ducts. This is called barter, and is the first and Simplest form of exchange. AS the civilized state appears, the necessity for an interchange of commodities is vastly increased. The hatter, tailor, shoe maker, farmer, and fisherman, all must exchange with each other, and traffic becomes one of the greatest departments of industry. But barter, under these circumstances, is a very inconvenient and clumsy mode of effecting the desired object. For example, the farmer proposes to exchange wheat for a hat; but the hatter, having already obtained all the wheat he wants, tells the farmer, that if he will procure him a table, he will give him a hat in exchange for it. The farmer now goes to the cabinet-maker and offers to exchange wheat for a table; but the cabinet-maker, already supplied with wheat, tells him if he will procure a pair of boots, he Will let him have a table. The farmer now goes to the bootmaker, who, we will suppose, is willing to take. Wheat, and the farmer gets the boots. With these he procures a table, with which, in turn, he gets the object he desired viz., a hat. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
