Book Contingencies of Value

Download or read book Contingencies of Value written by Barbara Herrnstein Smith and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charges of abandoned standards issue from government offices; laments for the loss of the best that has been thought and said resound through university corridors. While revisionists are perplexed by questions of value, critical theory--haunted by the heresy of relativism--remains captive to classical formulas. Barbara Herrnstein Smith's book confronts the conceptual problems and sociopolitical conflicts at the heart of these issues and raises their discussion to a new level of sophistication. Polemical without being rancorous, Contingencies of Value mounts a powerful critique of traditional conceptions of value, taste, judgment, and justification. Through incisive discussions of works by, among others, David Hume, Immanuel Kant, Northrop Frye, Georges Bataille, Jacques Derrida, Richard Rorty, and Jürgen Habermas, Smith develops an illuminating alternative framework for the explanation of these topics. All value, she argues, is radically contingent. Neither an objective property of things nor merely a subjective response to them, it is the variable effect of numerous interacting economies that is, systems of apportionment and circulation of "goods." Aesthetic value, moral value, and the truth-value of judgments are no exceptions, though traditional critical theory, ethics, and philosophy of language have always tried to prove otherwise. Smith deals in an original way with a wide variety of contemporary issues--from the relation between popular and high culture to the conflicting conception of human motives and actions in economic theory and classical humanism. In an important final chapter, she addresses directly the crucial problem of relativism and explains why a denial of the objectivity of value does not--as commonly feared and charged--produce either a fatuous egalitarianism or moral and political paralysis.

Book Vasilii Trediakovsky

Download or read book Vasilii Trediakovsky written by Irina Reyfman and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vasilii Trediakovsky (1703-69) was one of the eighteenth century poets instrumental in creating a Russian literature based on West European models, yet a striking discrepancy exists between his obvious importance and his notoriously bad reputation among his contemporaries and later generations of Russian writers and critics. In exploring the mechanisms of the creation and transmission of literary reputation, the author uses material that is frequently dismissed as irrelevant and unreliable: rumors, anecdotes, and opinions. This material is used to detect mythological patterns in accounts of the historical past - in this case eighteenth-century Russian literature - and to investigate the role of mythmaking in modern cultural consciousness. This book argues that the Russian literary figures of the eighteenth century regarded their age as making a complete break with the past and entering into a totally new stage of historical development.

Book excerpt: For students and scholars of literary theory, this unique volume provides organized access to a diverse body of literature. Researchers can look forward to a Dictionary of Critical Theory, and a Handbook of Critical Theory by the same author within the next two years. Recommended, for its comprehensive coverage and currency, to graduate-level collections. Choice Encompassing the variety of critical theories, the theoretical approaches, or schools influenced by continental theorists and philosophers that came to prominence beginning in the mid-1960s, this volume contains substantial, representative, and indexed bibliographies to assist researchers of specific topics in critical theory or those seeking works by major theorists. Nearly all-inclusive for the 1965-1987 period--a number of important works through August 1988 are also listed--the more than 5,500 works include books, articles, and dissertations available in English, French, or German and range from introductory to advanced levels; 350 of the works are listed in more than one section for the user's convenience. Readers are guided to appropriate works by the user-friendly, twelve-major-section format that classifies works on theory following the generally accepted names of current critical approaches including: structuralism, semiotics, narratology, psychological criticism, sociological criticism, feminist criticism, reader response criticism, reception aesthetics, phenomenological criticism, hermeneutics and deconstruction, post-structuralist, and post-deconstructive criticism. Each section has an index and may be used independently of the other sections. These section indexes are grouped together following the Classified Bibliography. Two additional indexes, a general index that aids in locating works covering more than one theory or that have not been classified into one of the theories, and an author index that applies to the entire bibliography, complete the volume. Sources for the bibliography include annual bibliographies of the MLA, the MHRA, and such works as Dissertations Abstracts International and Language and Language Behavior Abstracts as well as database searches for topics, keywords, and theorists. Companion volumes to this work, A Dictionary of Critical Theory and A Handbook of Critical Theory will be published within the next two years by Greenwood Press.
