Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethics of the Sabbath The main subject of the following discussion is the obligation of the Sabbath. The argument is drawn from the dictates of conscience, and not from the statements of Scripture, or the results of experience. This forms the distinctive peculiarity of the present work. Some may be tempted to pronounce it impossible to prove the obligation of the Sabbath on natural principles. Let me ask the reader to suspend his judgment till he knows precisely how much is intended to be proved, and how this is attempted to be done. The inquiry naturally assumes a philosophical, rather than a popular character. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethics of the Sabbath The critical remarks introduced in the first chap ter seemed necessary to justify the present attempt and they may be useful in calling attention to what I cannot help regarding as serious defects in most of the treatises on this subject hitherto published. The different steps of the main argument are considered in the five following chapters. In the two concluding ones, various questions are discussed which occupy at present a considerable share of public attention. On some of the points, more especially on some of those noticed in the last chapter, it would be unrea sonable to expect entire unanimity, even among the friends of the Sabbath. I have freely stated what appears to me to be truth, without seeking to make my statements harmonize with any particular theory, or please any particular party. In so far as they are true, let them be received in so far as they are not true, let them be rejected. The position, that Government has no right to open on the Sabbath such places of recreation as the Crystal Palace, I hold to be conclusively established. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussions about the Sabbath often center around moralistic laws and arguments over whether a person should be able to play cards or purchase liquor on Sundays. In this volume, popular author Walter Brueggemann writes that the Sabbath is not simply about keeping rules but rather about becoming a whole person and restoring a whole society. Importantly, Brueggemann speaks to a 24/7 society of consumption, a society in which we live to achieve, accomplish, perform, and possess. We want more, own more, use more, eat more, and drink more. Keeping the Sabbath allows us to break this restless cycle and focus on what is truly important: God, other people, all life. Brueggemann offers a transformative vision of the wholeness God intends, giving world-weary Christians a glimpse of a more fulfilling and simpler life through Sabbath observance.

Book The Morality of the Sabbath

Download or read book The Morality of the Sabbath written by Dudley Marvin Canright and published by Teach Services. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1875, Dudley M, Canright penned a book to show that the seventh-day Sabbath of the Cedalogue is of equal importance with the other precepts of that holy law; that, like them it is moral in its nature, and, hence properly belongs in the moral law where God has placed it; and that when the Sabbath is considered in all its bearings, it is all-important as a constantly-recurring test of man's love and loyalty to his Creator. Elder Canright concluded with this thought: Hoping that God will bless these pages to the honor of His name, the vindication of His holy Sabbath, and the salvation of souls, I commend it to His good providence.

Book A Grammar of the Ethics of John

Download or read book A Grammar of the Ethics of John written by Jan G. van der Watt and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a century of neglect, Johannine ethics has enjoyed a recent surge in interest inspired by new theoretical insights in analysing ethical data in John's Gospel. By closely re-reading the text on the basis of this fresh research, Jan G. van der Watt's aim in the present volume is to reveal ethical data within its structural interrelatedness. The result is a comprehensive overview of basic questions related to ethics, such as what the basis or source of ethics actually is, whether identity plays a role in ethical decision making, how values and ethical requirements are to be recognised, what is expected of an ethical agent, and what ethical behaviour looks like. As a coherent guide to getting deeds done ethically, this first volume on the grammar of the apostle's ethics focuses on his Gospel, while a second is set to concentrate on his letters.

Book Sanctification of the Sabbath

Download or read book Sanctification of the Sabbath written by Robert Haldane and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2021-12-17 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haldane proves the Lord’s Day is a permanent obligation, afterward embodied in the Ten Commandments and recognized by Jesus and His apostles, and that the change of day does not void the fourth commandment. He sets forth how beautifully the Sabbath day depicts the patience, goodness, and mercy of Jehovah. Most divine institutions point out the consequences of sin, but the Sabbath traces its origin to the time when man walked in innocence in the immediate presence of the Lord. We are to remember an institution forgotten in the bondage of Egypt—to keep holy a day God claims as His inalienable property, a claim restated by Jesus Christ for us. Table of Contents: 1. The Sabbath Anterior to the Mosaic Dispensation 2. The Sabbath Binding Alike under the Jewish and Christian Dispensations 3. The Manner of the Promulgation of the Decalogue 4. The Manner of the Preservation of the Decalogue and the Lessons Thereby Taught 5. Proof of the Permanence of the Fourth Commandment Derived from the Foregoing Statements 6. Internal Evidence Shows that the Fourth Commandment Is of Universal Obligation 7. Objections to the Permanent Obligation of the Sabbath Considered 8. The Observance of the Sabbath under the Christian Dispensation Is Fully Recognized by the Prophets 9. The Change from the Last to the First Day of the Week Has Not Invalidated the Obligation of the Sabbath

Book Christian Ethics Revised Edition

Download or read book Christian Ethics Revised Edition written by Wayne Grudem and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 1648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Does the Bible Teach about How to Live in Today's World? How should Christians live when the surrounding culture is increasingly hostile to Christian moral values? Granted, the Bible is our guide—but how can we know if we are interpreting it rightly with regard to ethical questions about wealth and poverty, marriage and divorce, birth control, abortion, euthanasia, homosexuality, ethical business practices, environmental stewardship, and dozens of other issues? And on a very practical level, how can we know God's will in the ordinary decisions of life? To address questions like these, Wayne Grudem, author of the bestselling book Systematic Theology, draws on 40 years of teaching classes in ethics to write this wide-ranging introduction to biblical moral reasoning, organized according to the structure of the Ten Commandments. He issues a challenging call for Christians to live lives of personal holiness and offers a vision of the Christian life that is full of joy and blessing through living each day in a way that is pleasing to God.
