Stine Sometimes the truth is stranger than you could ever imagine... All across America, CIA agents are being hunted down and murdered in bizarre circumstances. The deaths cause ripples of panic to spread all through the agency and the finger of blame is pointing at disappeared Defense Intelligence operatives, Ethan Warner and Nicola Lopez, and at Warner's missing fiancée, Joanna Defoe. No longer friendly with the CIA after a botched operation that put them in the line of fire, Warner and Lopez are on their own mission to find Joanna. But when their old boss, Doug Jarvis, hunts them down, they realize that they have one last chance to clear their names - find the person responsible for the murders, or be accused themselves. But the operation is far from simple, and the tentacles of conspiracy spread far wider than Warner and Lopez could ever have imagined. In fact, it's a job that looks set to send them all the way to hell and back. And hell is precisely where Joanna has been... 'Earth-shattering intrigue, hyperdrive action and a desperate race to save humanity, cranked up to the max with scarily realistic science and apocalyptic religion thrown in for good measure . . . a major new talent has hit the mystery thriller scene' Scott Mariani, bestselling author of The Lost Relic 'The fossilised remains of a 7,000-year-old creature dug from the sands of the Negev Desert in Israel become the bones of contention in Dean Crawford's fast-paced debut thriller... The book neatly threads together a wild variety of plotlines' Wall Street Journal `Partly mythical read, part thriller this pacy tale is a page turner guaranteed to keep you up late' Sun

Are we able to live forever?Do you believe in love? How do you define it? Do you think feelings and emotions are merely the fluctuation of chemicals in one's brain, they are neither derived by knowledge, experience, logic nor reasoning? Will you trade love for eternity? In this three-part series, a group of entrepreneurs, software engineers, mathematicians and neuroscientists, for very different reasons, embark on an unfathomable journey in the search for eternity. Each has to face their own demons and are forced to make sacrifices and hard decisions throughout the quest for the privilege to witness the wonders of science, and to be loved and understood. What is humanity's position in the vast universe and what are the fundamental qualities that make us human? No-one has ever said wisdom and morality are equal, although people hope they are. Will the convergence of the advances in technology across many disciplines, lead to the inevitable defining moment in the human evolutionary path and its unintended consequences?

Book excerpt: Living 800 years is like the fountain of youth for some…and for others it’s worse than a death sentence. Eternity, Inc. owns a virus that allows humans to live up to 800 years–their physical bodies age only one year for every ten years of life. Miki Yokoyama leads a rebel organization known as the Agers. Her goal is to create a counter agent to reintroduce “natural” death, no matter the cost. When Eternity learns of the Ager plan, they send their best agents to infiltrate Miki’s organization and to sabotage any efforts to distribute a counter-virus. Rohin Chawla and Miki were science partners and passionate lovers when they originally discovered the Eternity virus in Antarctica two hundred years ago. But they separated as enemies. When they meet again, Rohin realizes he must rally his resources to stop the Ager virus or risk the only viable future he sees. But no one can foresee the extent human treachery will go when there are astronomical profits and world-wide political power at stake. Will Rohin and Miki combine forces against a greater evil, or fight each other over prolonged life or natural death? Their decision will determine who survives—and, ultimately, the outcome of humanity's future.

But human beings have found no signs of other life anywhere approaching human intelligence. This changes when scientists discover a sunless planet they name Danann, travelling the void just beyond the edge of the Galaxy at such a high speed that it cannot be natural. Its continents and oceans have been sculpted and shaped, with but a single megaplex upon it--close to perfectly preserved--with tens of thousands of near-identical metallic-silver-blue towers set along curved canals. Yet Danann has been abandoned for so long that even the atmosphere has frozen solid. Within a few years Danann will approach an area of singularities that will make exploration and investigation impossible. Orbital shuttle pilot Jiendra Chang, artist Chendor Barna, and history professor Liam Fitzhugh are recruited by the Comity government and its Deep Space Service, along with scores of other experts as part of an unprecedented and unique expedition to unravel Danann's secrets. And there are forces that will stop at nothing to prevent them, even if it means interstellar war. Other Series by L.E. Download or read book Time and Eternity written by Brian Leftow and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brian Leftow makes an important contribution to the longstanding debate among philosophers and theologians about the nature of God's eternity. The author develops a powerful and original defense of the notion that God is eternal in that he exists timelessly; that is, that though God exists, he does not exist at any time. Leftow defends the claim that a timeless God can be an object of human experience, and he attempts to delineate the extent of such a God's omniscience. Finally, the author pays special attention to the relation between the claim that God is timeless and the claim that God is metaphysically simple.

Book Building for Eternity

Download or read book Building for Eternity written by C.J. Brandon and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2014-08-29 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One marker of the majesty of ancient Rome is its surviving architectural legacy, the stunning remains of which are scattered throughout the circum-Mediterranean landscape. Surprisingly, one truly remarkable aspect of this heritage remains relatively unknown. There exists beneath the waters of the Mediterranean the physical remnants of a vast maritime infrastructure that sustained and connected the western world’s first global empire and economy. The key to this incredible accomplishment and to the survival of structures in the hostile environment of the sea for two thousand years was maritime concrete, a building material invented and then employed by Roman builders on a grand scale to construct harbor installations anywhere they were needed, rather than only in locations with advantageous geography or topography. This book explains how the Romans built so successfully in the sea with their new invention. The story is a stimulating mix of archaeological, geological, historical and chemical research, with relevance to both ancient and modern technology. It also breaks new ground in bridging the gap between science and the humanities by integrating analytical materials science, history, and archaeology, along with underwater exploration. The book will be of interest to anyone interested in Roman architecture and engineering, and it will hold special interest for geologists and mineralogists studying the material characteristics of pyroclastic volcanic rocks and their alteration in seawater brines. The demonstrable durability and longevity of Roman maritime concrete structures may be of special interest to engineers working on cementing materials appropriate for the long-term storage of hazardous substances such as radioactive waste. A pioneering methodology was used to bore into maritime structures both on land and in the sea to collect concrete cores for testing in the research laboratories of the CTG Italcementi Group, a leading cement producer in Italy, the University of Berkeley, and elsewhere. The resulting mechanical, chemical and physical analysis of 36 concrete samples taken from 11 sites in Italy and the eastern Mediterranean have helped fill many gaps in our knowledge of how the Romans built in the sea. To gain even more knowledge of the ancient maritime technology, the directors of the Roman Maritime Concrete Study (ROMACONS) engaged in an ambitious and unique experimental archaeological project – the construction underwater of a reproduction of a Roman concrete pier or pila. The same raw materials and tools available to the ancient builders were employed to produce a reproduction concrete structure that appears to be remarkably similar to the ancient one studied during ROMACON’s fieldwork between 2002-2009. This volume reveals a remarkable and unique archaeological project that highlights the synergy that now exists between the humanities and science in our continuing efforts to understand the past. It will quickly become a standard research tool for all interested in Roman building both in the sea and on land, and in the history and chemistry of marine concrete. The authors also hope that the data and observations it presents will stimulate further research by scholars and students into related topics, since we have so much more to learn in the years ahead.

Book Uncertain eternity or eternal uncertainty

Download or read book Uncertain eternity or eternal uncertainty written by Karel Svačina and published by Masarykova univerzita. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
