Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Church in the Seventeenth Century Thus, when Elizabeth required the clergy to wear the surplice,2 which could not reasonably be considered as symbolical of any corrupt doctrine, the Puritans persistently refused to conform. They objected also to the reverent attitude of kneeling at Communion, to the Sign of the cross in baptism, and the ring in marriage. They had, however, no quarrel with the doctrinal views of the Reformers, and although some of them favoured a Presbyterian rather than an Episcopal form of Church government, the vast majority were content to serve under the latter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Church in the Eighteenth Century The authors are indebted to their reviewers for many kind remarks and much careful criticism. They have endeavoured to correct all errors which have been thus pointed out to them. As the nature of this work has sometimes been a little mis apprehended, it should be added that its authors at no time intended it to be a regular history. When they first mapped out their respective shares in the joint undertaking, their design nad been to write a number of short essays relating to many different features in the religion and Church history of England in the Eighteenth Century. This general purpose was adhered to and it was only after much deliberation that the word Chapters was substituted for Essays.' There was, however, one important modification. Fewer subjects were, in the issue, specifically dis cussed, but these more in detail while some questions - such, ' for instance, as that of the Church in the Colonies - were scarcely touched upon. Hence a certain disproportion of treatment, which a general introductory chapter could but partially remedy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Churchwomen of the Seventeenth Century The notices in this volume commence with the period of the Great Rebellion. As an introduction to them, some account is here given of a family that belonged to the more peaceful times antecedent to that event. In 1624, the Ferrar fam ily, consisting of Mrs. Ferrar, Nicholas Ferrar, his sister, and all the ounger members of the family, retired rom the world to a devotional establishment. Mrs. Ferrar seems to have been admira bly adapted to assist and guide such an undertaking. In her youth she was de scribed as of great beauty, and of very modest deportment, using few words, but when she spoke, showing wisdom and eloquence beyond her sex and bringing up her children with great care and piety; and in her widowhood, at the age of seventy-three, when she entered so warmly into her son's views, she was possessed of so much vigour, and had so much of the appearance as well as the reality of health, that those who saw her concluded her not to be more than forty. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Church in the Eighteenth Century, Vol. 1 of 2 Some years have elapsed since the authors of this work first entertained the idea of writing upon certain aspects of religious life and thought in the Eighteenth Century. If the ground is no longer so unoccupied as it was then, it appears to them that there is still abundant room for the book which they now lay before the public. Their main subject is expressly the English Church, and they write as English Churchmen, taking, however, no narrower basis than that of the National Church itself. Book English Church Furniture Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Church Furniture Classic Reprint written by J. Charles Cox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Church Furniture At first it was proposed to confine these accounts and lists to pre-reformation days; but it was eventually decided to give a certain amount of general information down to the end of the seventeenth century. The original intention was to include descriptions of such matters as painted glass, wall paintings, floor tiles, and ironwork; but the plan became perforce more restricted for lack of space. It is possible that these subjects may be discussed in a future volume. The following pages have been in the course of preparation for about six years. The delay in issuing a book which has been so long announced has been caused by the desire of the authors to improve and perfect the lists of various articles of extant church furniture. They are, however, convinced that a delay of even double that period would not suffice to make the work actually complete, and are fully aware that it will be found deficient in some places, and perhaps incorrect in others. Nevertheless, it seems best to issue the book, notwithstanding its probable defects, for a postponement until perfection was attained would probably prove perpetual. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Church in the Nineteenth Century (1800-1833) It was impossible to investigate the history of the English Church in the eighteenth century without being carried forward into the nineteenth, especially when one loved, and believed in, the Church's system, and could not fail to see, towards the close of the earlier period, indications of the dawn of a brighter day. Hence, the materials for this volume have been accumulating for more than twenty years. During the whole of that time the subject, though amid many interruptions, has never been wholly absent from the writers mind; and his notes upon it swelled into such a vast mass, that they began to be in danger of becoming unmanageable. Nearly five years have elapsed since he began to put the mass into shape; and the result is at last presented to the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Church: In the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Centuries Interest in the history of the English Church has been steadily increasing of late years, since the great importance of the Church as a factor in the development of the national life and character from the earliest times has come to be more fully and clearly recognised. But side by side with this increase of interest in the history of our Church, the want has been felt of a more complete presentment of it than has hitherto been attempted. Certain portions, indeed, have been written with a fulness and accuracy that leave nothing to be desired; but many others have been dealt with, if at all, only in manuals and text-books which are generally dull by reason of excessive compression, or in sketches which, however brilliant and suggestive, are not histories. What seemed to be wanted was a continuous and adequate history in volumes of a moderate size and price, based upon a careful study of original authorities and the best ancient and modern writers. On the other hand, the mass of material which research has now placed at the disposal of the scholar seemed to render it improbable that any one would venture to undertake such a history single-handed, or that, if he did, he would live to complete it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of England Their fathers. Its faith, preached as univers ally true and necessary for salvation, its Worship, impressively carried out, struck their imagination and gained their assent. This Christianity was one. There was no thought that Christians could be Christian in different ways, or as members of different communions. Even when there were disputes and misunderstandings, as there were at first between English and Celtic Christians in England, they were at one in principle. The only dispute was as to the true following of the rule which all agreed must exist they would never have consented to differ in belief or in the organization of their Church. This unity was the lesson that had been impressed upon Christians by great doctrinal struggles through which agreement in faith had been reached, and by the training in uniformity of administration which they had received from the Roman Empire, under which their system had grown up and after whose pattern it had been largely shaped. In theory and in practice there was one faith and one organization, though the former might not always be intelligently held nor the latter efficiently administered. Nor am I wholly without hope that by pointing men to the historic causes of their religious conflicts I may, in however humble a degree, be serving the interest of that pacification which thoughtful persons are every where coming to desire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of the Church of England Indicated in Selections From the Writings of Eminent Divines, Vol. 1 of 2: With Memoirs of Their Lives, and Historical Sketches of the Times in Which They Lived Among the most satisfactory proofs that the vitality and self-regenerative power of our national character still survive, is the. Fact, that for some years past a dis position has been manifested to return to the study of those imperishable works of our early divines, which were largely instrumental in the hands of Providence towards its formation, and still, our great poets not excepted, present the best 'literary evidence of its seri ousness, depth, and vigour. The object proposed in the following pages is, at once to stimulate and to guide this reviving interest in and just appreciation of the writings of the most eminent theologians of the Church of England. With this view, after pointing out as in a map the histo rical circumstances and positions of the several great men who are brought forward, the author has endea voured to exhibit in biographical narratives their per sonal claims to regard, and to give in selections from their works some evidence of their title as authors to the studious consideration of posterity. Download or read book The English Church in the Nineteenth Century Classic Reprint written by Eugene Stock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Church in the Nineteenth Century This little book is an attempt to do, on a very small scale, what has not yet been done, so far as I am aware. It may be that the forthcoming work by Mr. F. Warre Cornish will prove to be the adequate and impartial presentation of the subject which is so much needed. I had hoped to have the great advantage of reading it before sending my ms. To the printers, but it has not appeared in time. Of existing books, the only one in my judgment really satis factory is the late Canon Overton's, which has the same title as my own; but it only covers one - third of the century, 1800 - 1833. Works that include the remaining two-thirds are histories Of the Church from an earlier period, and naturally afford but little Space for later events and episodes; while Of these events and episodes the writers seem to think only three or four worth recording, viz. The Oxford Movement, the Revival of Convo cation, and the Essay: and Reviews and Ritual Controversies. One standard book does treat the period more at length; but its omissions are very strange, as my readers will perceive by referring to the footnote on page 51 Of the present volume. Book England and the Catholic Church Under Queen Elizabeth Classic Reprint

Download or read book England and the Catholic Church Under Queen Elizabeth Classic Reprint written by Arnold Oskar Meyer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England and the Catholic Church Under Queen Elizabeth The volume now before the reader was planned originally as a short introduction to a work on England and the Catholic Church under the Stuarts. Although it has grown into a book, still it does not claim to give as full a treatment of the subject as I hope to give for the period between 1603 and 1689. I saw no reason to repeat what has been told so often and so well, e.g. the story of catholic rebellions and conspiracies against Elizabeth, the schemes of which the imprisoned Queen Mary was either actively or passively the centre, the diplomatic history of the projected invasions, and the military history of the naval war with Spain. These incidents and events, dramatic as they are, have always claimed the largest share of attention, and I doubt whether anything really new and important can be said about them. I therefore decided to sketch these chapters as briefly as possible, and to lay the stress on questions which have not yet found definite and satisfactory answers.
