Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of the Beautiful in Music To one who has devoted his life to the study of music, it may often be a subject of curious consideration, whether the unconscious admiration of a fine work - the unreasoning enthusiasm for a certain composer - the complacent feeling of enjoyment produced in the majority of those who listen to masterpieces in music - may not indeed be a state of mind which it would be cruel to disturb. But then comes the consideration, how much greater must be the enjoyment and pleasure derived from a "thing of beauty" if we are able to analyse the elements of this beauty and to justify our own admiration! How much our respect for the composer will increase if, instead of "wondering with a foolish face of praise," we can understand the relations between the author and the musical art, and render to our ourselves an account of our enthusiasm, by investigating and appreciating the laws and rules that govern the Beautiful! This consideration must impress us with the necessity and usefulness of an analysis of the Beautiful in Music. Many volumes have at various times been written on the nature of Beauty. Book The Foundations of Musical sthetics

Download or read book The Foundations of Musical sthetics written by John B. McEwen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Musical Æsthetics: Or the Elements of Music The word "æsthetic," which originally meant perception by the senses, has had its meaning particularised so that it usually is associated with perception of a specific kind. In this sense it is applied to the appreciative attitude of the discerning mind towards the beautiful in art and in nature. Philosophy has spent not a little time and trouble on the attempt to formulate and define the essential nature of the beautiful; but what one regards as beautiful, another will either lack interest in or even positively dislike, and such attempts, therefore, have not been particularly successful. This conflict of tastes is particularly noticeable in the case of the Art of Music. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Eduard Hanslick s On the Musically Beautiful

Download or read book Eduard Hanslick s On the Musically Beautiful written by Lee Rothfarb and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-29 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eduard Hanslick's On the Musically Beautiful (Vom Musikalisch-Schönen, 1854), written and published before the author turned 30, is a watershed document in the history of aesthetics, and of thought about music generally. The notion of "absolute music," which lies at the heart of the treatise, is now more than ever at the center of discussions about music, particularly that of the Classic and Romantic eras. Rothfarb and Landerer's translation includes three introductory essays offering fresh perspectives on Hanslick, and on the origins, publications, and translation history of his treatise, as well as its central concepts and philosophical underpinnings. The volume also includes thorough annotations, a readers' guide, a glossary of important terms and concepts, and an appendix, which comprises the original opening of Chapter 1, substantially rewritten in subsequent editions, as well as the original ending of the treatise that was excised by Hanslick in later editions. The book's ideas, cogently and often wittily expressed, are mandatory reading for anyone interested in eighteenth and nineteenth-century music and its cultural and intellectual background.
