Book excerpt: Life presumably arose in the primeval oceans with similar or even greater salinity than the present ocean, so the ancient cells were designed to withstand salinity. However, the immediate ancestors of land plants most likely lived in fresh, or slightly brackish, water. The fresh/brackish water origins might explain why many land plants, including some cereals, can withstand moderate salinity, but only 1 – 2 % of all the higher plant species were able to re-discover their saline origins again and survive at increased salinities close to that of seawater. From a practical side, salinity is among the major threats to agriculture, having been one of the reasons for the demise of the ancient Mesopotamian Sumer civilisation and in the present time causing huge annual economic losses of over 10 billion USD. The effects of salinity on plants include osmotic stress, disruption of membrane ion transport, direct toxicity of high cytoplasmic concentrations of sodium and chloride on cellular processes and induced oxidative stress. Ion transport is the crucial starting point that determines salinity tolerance in plants. Transport via membranes is mediated mostly by the ion channels and transporters, which ensure selective passage of specific ions. The molecular and structural diversity of these ion channels and transporters is amazing. Obtaining the detailed descriptions of distinct ion channels and transporters present in halophytes, marine algae and salt-tolerant fungi and then progressing to the cellular and the whole organism mechanisms, is one of the logical ways to understand high salinity tolerance. Transfer of the genes from halophytes to agricultural crops is a means to increase salt tolerance of the crops. The theoretical scientific approaches involve protein chemistry, structure-function relations of membrane proteins, synthetic biology, systems biology and physiology of stress and ion homeostasis. At the time of compiling this e-book many aspects of ion transport under salinity stress are not yet well understood. The e-book has attracted researchers in ion transport and salinity tolerance. We have combined our efforts to achieve a wider, more detailed understanding of salt tolerance in plants mediated by ion transport, to understand present and future ways to modify and manipulate ion transport and salinity tolerance and also to find natural limits for the modifications.

Various methods of introducing salt tolerance in plants such as breeding, genetic variations, physiological approaches, tissue culture, somaclonal variation, somatic hybridation and recombinat DNA technology have been discussed. The nature and properties of salt affected soils and groundwaters and principles for amelioration and management of these critical problems have been included in this book. Furthermore, Afforestation and Agroforestry techniques for salt affected soils with emphasis on salt tolerant tree species and suitable tree crop combinations also find their much needed due space in the present book.

Book excerpt: Hydrilla verticillata, Myriophyllum spicatum, Potamogeton perfoliatus, and Vallisneria americana were compared among different salinity and light conditions. The culture solution in five pairs of tanks was gradually adjusted to salinities of 0, 2, 4,6, and 12 ppt. With the exception of H. verticillata, the sea plants may be considered eurysaline species that are able to salinities one third the strength of seawater. With increasing salinity, the influorescence production decreased in M. spicatum and P. perfoliatus, yet asexual reproduction in the latter species by underground buds remained constant. Stem elongation increased in response to shading in M. spicatum, while shaded P. perfoliatus has higher concentrates of chlorophyll a. In association with high epiphytic mass, chlorophyll a concentrations in all species were greatest at 12 ppt. The concentration of sodium increased in all four species examined, indicating that these macrophytes did not possess mechanisms to exclude this ion. The nitrogen content of the plants tested increased significantly with higher sodium concentrate, suggesting that nitrogen may be used in osmoregulation.

As a disturbance, droughts can be thought of as “ramps” in that they usually build slowly and take time to become evident. As ecosystem engineers, plants modify the physical environment triggering positive feedbacks within the patch and negative feedbacks alongside the patch, resulting in regular pattern formation. These scale-dependent feedbacks enable to explain only the lateral expansion of patches, but not their longitudinal development. The objective was to study the processes that trigger positive and negative feedbacks for plants along patches and the consequences for patch dynamics. In situ coupled measurements of hydrodynamics, sediment characteristics, and plant morphology were performed along patches of increasing length. The results demonstrated that a minimum patch length was needed to induce in-patch velocity reduction and fine sediment accumulation. As a consequence of these modifications, patch length influenced the nutrient concentrations in interstitial water of the in-patch sediment, this effect being observed only over a certain threshold length. Over this threshold length, the sediment presented an accumulation of ammonium and depletion of nitrates. Plant height was related to patch length by a quadratic relationship, suggesting that negative feedbacks occur over a certain patch length, probably due to the high ammonium concentration that can be toxic for plants in the range measured. The threshold lengths over which patches influence the biogeochemical processes and negative feedbacks occur were reduced in the ecosystem presenting the highest nutrient level. The results also demonstrated that the physical habitat modifications induced by patches depend on the plant traits and patch characteristics. The plant-induced modifications of the physical habitat have cascading effects on the biogeochemical processes and plant growth, which depended on the environmental conditions, with consequences for patch dynamics and ecosystem functioning.
