Book The Effectiveness of a Word Box Instructional Approach on Word Identification and Spelling Performance for a Sample of Students with Learning Disabilities

Download or read book The Effectiveness of a Word Box Instructional Approach on Word Identification and Spelling Performance for a Sample of Students with Learning Disabilities written by Laurice M. Joseph and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word box instructional approach is one of the approaches that is used in Reading Recovery programs for first-grade children. Findings of the current study suggested that this and possibly other Reading Recoveryapproaches have the potential to benefit older elementary students who are receiving educational services in programs for students with learning disabilities. Future studies are needed to compare ongoing changes in students' performance with the use of the word box instructional approach to ongoing changes in students' performance with the use of other approaches that are aimed at helping children with learning disabilities map speech onto print.

Book The Effects of Word Box Instruction on Word Identification and Spelling Performance of Consonant vowel consonant Words of First Grade Students who are at Risk Learners

Download or read book The Effects of Word Box Instruction on Word Identification and Spelling Performance of Consonant vowel consonant Words of First Grade Students who are at Risk Learners written by Brittany Kanotz and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of word box instruction on word identification and spelling performance of CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words of first grade students who are at risk learners. Word identification was measured via oral responses and spelling performance was measured by correct letter sequence. Students were between the ages of five and six, and all three participants were identified as at risk learners in reading. A multiple-probe across participants design was used to evaluate intervention effectiveness. Finding indicated students reading and spelling performance of CVC words improved as a result of the intervention.

Book The Effects of Three Instructional Approaches on Student Word Reading Performance

Download or read book The Effects of Three Instructional Approaches on Student Word Reading Performance written by Melissa Ann Schmidgall and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The current study examined the instructional effectiveness and efficiency of three word reading interventions on student's cumulative number of words read accurately and cumulative learning rate. Specifically, alternating treatments designs were used to compare the effects of interspersal drill and practice training (presenting one known word prior to every third unknown word for a ratio of 67% unknown to 33% known), the phonic analysis method of word boxes (presenting only unknown words), and a traditional drill and practice procedure (presenting only unknown words) on word reading mastery. This study was also intended to extend previous research findings of the positive outcomes of the three interventions by examining the acquisition, maintenance, and generalization of words that were taught under the three instructional conditions. Social validity of the three instructional methods was also assessed. Subjects selected for this study consisted of six first grade students from a suburban elementary school who were identified as deficient in word identification skills as measured by their performance on the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS). Subjects received twenty-five minute sessions of intervention five days per week for a total of twenty sessions. Results showed positive effects for all three conditions in regards to enhancing the word reading performance of students in the study. Specifically, the results of the study indicated that the word boxes approach was most effective and the traditional drill and practice approach was most efficient in terms of increasing word reading performance. Results of the study also suggested that none of the three instructional approaches was statistically more effective in terms of student's ability to "maintain" and "generalize" newly acquired words. Students demonstrated a preference for the word boxes approach as compared to the traditional drill and interspersing methods. Social validity results indicated that all three instructional methods are a socially valid way to assess and teach word reading skills to students identified as having word identification difficulties. Implications of these findings are discussed as they pertain to educational practitioners and researchers.

Book Word Recognition in Beginning Literacy

Download or read book Word Recognition in Beginning Literacy written by Jamie L. Metsala and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume grew out of a conference that brought together beginning reading experts from the fields of education and the psychology of reading and reading disabilities so that they could present and discuss their research findings and theories about how children learn to read words, instructional contexts that facilitate this learning, background experiences prior to formal schooling that contribute, and sources of difficulty in disabled readers. The chapters bring a variety of perspectives to bear on a single cluster of problems involving the acquisition of word reading ability. It is the editors' keen hope that the insights and findings of the research reported here will influence and become incorporated into the development of practicable, classroom-based instructional programs that succeed in improving children's ability to become skilled readers. Furthermore, they hope that these insights and findings will become incorporated into the working knowledge that teachers apply when they teach their students to read, and into further research on reading acquisition.

This book incorporates current best practices in phonemic awareness, word families, letter-sound patterns, and multi-letter groups into 96 practical, research-based activities. Coverage addresses the needs of children who have difficulty identifying words in context, as well as those whose first language is not English. By focusing on transferable teaching strategies rather than rote letter/sound learning, this book reshapes how teachers will introduce this critical component of reading to today's classrooms. This revision includes: NEW! Seven best practices for teaching reading and sharing literacy with English Language learners include research-based guidance for effective teaching of English language learners. NEW! In light of high-stakes testing and the demands on classroom time, this book now includes Spare Minute teaching ideas that call for little, if any, advance preparation and are suitable for brief periods of time. NEW! The importance of phonemic awareness for phonics, spelling and reading fluency is explained in greater detail to help readers of this book develop insight into how phonemic awareness impacts learning to read. NEW! Because developing reading fluency is now a more visible component of classroom reading programs, Chapter 1 includes an explanation of how phonics contributes to fluent reading. NEW!
