Book Polymer Composites Macro and Microcomposites

Download or read book Polymer Composites Macro and Microcomposites written by Sabu Thomas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-02-06 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first systematic reference on the topic with an emphasis on thecharacteristics and dimension of the reinforcement. This first of three volumes, authored by leading researchers inthe field from academia, government, industry, as well as privateresearch institutions around the globe, focuses on macro and microcomposites. Clearly divided into three sections, the first offers anintroduction to polymer composites, discussing the state of theart, new challenges, and opportunities of various polymer compositesystems, as well as preparation and manufacturing techniques. Thesecond part looks at macro systems, with an emphasis on fiberreinforced polymer composites, textile composites, and polymerhybrid composites. Likewise, the final section deals with microsystems, including micro particle reinforced polymer composites, the synthesis, surface modification and characterization of microparticulate fillers and flakes as well as filled polymer microcomposites, plus applications and the recovery, recycling and lifecycle analysis of synthetic polymeric composites.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of a New Catechol Derived Coupling Agent

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of a New Catechol Derived Coupling Agent written by Honghe Liang and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates catechol derivatives as coupling agents for rubber reinforcement using silica. Methods to synthesize various catechol derivatives that have different chain length and functional end group will be presented. The structures of the catechol-based coupling agents are shown below. The catechol group in these coupling agents is expected to chelate to the silicon atoms on the surface of silica, and the sulfide groups react with the unsaturation in the rubber. Blends of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and butadiene rubber (BR) reinforced by silica are studied. The Payne effect of uncured rubber was studied as an indicator to the silica dispersion in the SBR/BR phase promoted by the catechol-base coupling agents. Payne effect of cured rubber compounds was studied as an indicator to the ability of the catechol-based coupling agents to prevent silica from re-aggregate during vulcanization. The catechol-based coupling agents are less effective than silane coupling agent bis[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl] tetrasulfide (TESPT). The dynamic mechanical properties of the catechol derivatives modified cured sample are intermediate between the TESPT-containing standard and the unmodified standard. It appears that the inferior performances due to the reduced basicity of the catechol derivates having an electron-withdrawing acyl group. Synthesis of catechol-based coupling agents that overcome this problem is underway.
