Book The Causal Effect of Faculty Unions on Institutional Decision Making

Download or read book The Causal Effect of Faculty Unions on Institutional Decision Making written by Stephen R. Porter and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this paper is to estimate the causal effect of unionization on institutional decision-making. We use a national survey of presidents and faculty senate leaders to measure the level of shared governance at 341 public universities in fifteen different areas. To address the endogeneity of faculty unionization, we use an index of state employee collective bargaining rights as an instrument for unionization. We find that unionization greatly increases faculty influence over decision-making in areas such as setting faculty salary scales, individual faculty salaries, appointing department chairs, and appointments to institution-wide committees.

Book The Politics of Faculty Unionization

Download or read book The Politics of Faculty Unionization written by Gordon B. Arnold and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2000-09-30 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faculty unions are an important part of the current higher education landscape, particularly in the public sector. Yet, the rise of unionism among university faculties during the 1960's and 1970's was an unexpected development that clashed with many assumptions about academic life. Amid campus tensions, economic crisis and state political controversies, the faculties of the Universities of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island were among those joining ranks of organized labor during that era. This book follows the documentary record of faculty unionization at these New England universities to explore how and why unionization came about. As the book reveals, faculty unionization can be much more than the simple result of local controversies. When examined in light of the surrounding political and economic environment, a complex picture emerges. On these New England campuses, the process invoked the participation of many actors. Faculties, administrations, boards, state political leaders, and national associations all played a part in shaping the course of events, sometimes in unexpected and unintended ways. Gordon B. Arnold places these events in context, providing a 35-year overview of faculty unionism, and locating faculty unionization within the broader realm of organized labor and the rise of public sector collective bargaining.

Book Understanding the Impacts of Unionization on the Working Conditions of Adjunct Faculty

Download or read book Understanding the Impacts of Unionization on the Working Conditions of Adjunct Faculty written by Karen Gillespie Connors and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Adjunct faculty make up a significant portion of teaching professionals at colleges and universities, although their treatment does not always reflect their significance. Unfortunately, the exploitation of adjunct faculty is a widely known fact in higher education (Dorfeld, 2015). As a result of the exploitation of adjunct faculty, Patton (2016) noted that there is a national unionization movement taking place across the academy. Unionization typically occurs where employees are dissatisfied with their working conditions (Patton, 2016). The purpose of this study is to understand the impacts of unionization on the working conditions of adjunct faculty at a small, private, four-year university which offers both undergraduate and graduate programs The research question guiding this study is: How has unionization impacted the working conditions of adjunct faculty at a small, private, four-year university? Six key themes emerged from the data collected: legitimacy through resource allocation, compensation and benefits, sense of belonging, appointments and course cancellations, teaching and evaluations and unionization efforts. The findings from the study led to several recommendations for practice: university administration must treat adjunct faculty fairly; university administration must review the compensation and benefits of adjunct faculty to ensure appropriateness and fairness; where unionization has occurred, unions should ensure that adjunct faculty union representatives are fully versed in the provisions outlined in the collective bargaining agreements; university administration and tenure-track faculty need to involve adjunct faculty in faculty governance and faculty committees; university administration must ensure adjunct faculty are educated on the topics of academic freedom, the performance evaluation process and course cancellation procedures. Additionally, university administration, tenure-track faculty, adjunct faculty and unions will better understand the issues affecting adjunct faculty and how unionization has impacted their working conditions. Unionization is viewed as having a positive impact on improving the working conditions of adjunct faculty in this study. Three areas for future research were also identified: compare and contrast the impacts of unionization on the working conditions of adjunct faculty at different types of colleges/universities (i.e., public colleges/universities, private research universities and community colleges); understand the impacts of adjunct faculty unionization as experienced by university administration; and conduct a large-scale quantitative study focused on the impacts of unionization on the working conditions of adjunct faculty and compare and contrast those results with this study. Overall, this research aims to provide insights and guidance to university administration, tenure-track faculty and adjunct faculty where unionization is being considered, has occurred or is trying to be prevented"--Author's abstract.

Book Faculty Unions and Their Effects on University Shared Governance

Download or read book Faculty Unions and Their Effects on University Shared Governance written by René Castro and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Unions have been a part of many university political landscapes for over four decades. During the early years of faculty unionization, researchers explored the effects of faculty unionization on university governance bodies and the shared governance process, but the results of these initial inquiries were often mixed. Nonetheless, several researchers predicted that over time the union would have the effect of diminishing the influence and power of faculty senates as the union's strength and influence grew. Employing several Southern California CSU campuses as the study's primary research site, this qualitative study further explored the impact of faculty unionization through the eyes, ears, and experiences of thirteen faculty senators. This process provided the participants an opportunity to individually reflect on the events and issues most relevant to their experiences with shared governance from their own vantage point, allowing me to unearth a richer and thicker description of their perceptions and views. The result was a dialogue that yielded responses that were unconfined by predetermined or conventional responses which in turn allowed me to explore the question of whether or not faculty unionization results in a loss of power and influence for faculty governance bodies by using the participant's own experiences as a window to the phenomenon.
