Book A Comparison of Explicit and Implicit Vocabulary Instruction on the Acquisition of English Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension in English Language Learners in Grades Four Through Twelve

Download or read book A Comparison of Explicit and Implicit Vocabulary Instruction on the Acquisition of English Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension in English Language Learners in Grades Four Through Twelve written by Deana Turner Pittman and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: As a result of current legislation and the mainstreaming of many specialized student populations, teachers are, more than ever, in need of research-proven strategies to use in their classroom. With considerable goals such as those contained in the No Child Left Behind legislation, it is imperative that teachers are knowledgeable about a variety of strategies for use in their classrooms. The intended purpose of this study was to examine the effects of explicit vocabulary instruction on the performance of ELL students in grades four through twelve. Specifically, this study examined a group of ELL students' scores in vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension with implicit vocabulary instruction and with explicit vocabulary instruction. Participants completed six units--three with implicit vocabulary instruction and three with explicit vocabulary instruction. The scores were analyzed using a dependent t-test on first, the total vocabulary gain (vocabulary acquisition), and second, on the total reading comprehension. Descriptive statistics were also used on students' classroom averages for each of the six units. The results of this study indicated that not only did explicit vocabulary instruction have a significantly positive effect on the vocabulary acquisition of ELL students, but they also indicated that explicit vocabulary instruction has a positive effect on the overall performance in the classroom. The results of the comparison of implicit and explicit instruction for reading comprehension indicated that there was no significant difference in the two methods. The results of this study have important implications for the classroom and make a strong case for explicit vocabulary instruction.

The researcher applied numerous targeted vocabulary teaching strategies to the curriculum such as 1) Text Talk, 2) synonyms and antonyms, 3) word nuances, 4) homophones, homonyms, and homographs, 5) Prediction, Association, Verification, and Evaluation (PAVE), 6) CLOZE passages, 7) book introductions, 8) sight words, 9) idioms, 10) graphic organizers, and 11) summarizing. The author found that short intervals of vocabulary instruction improved reading comprehension scores of most ELL students and were easy to fit into the school day.

Book The Efficacy of Explicit Instruction of Reading Comprehension Strategies to English Language Learners in Elementary School

Download or read book The Efficacy of Explicit Instruction of Reading Comprehension Strategies to English Language Learners in Elementary School written by Jilynn Christine Smith and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to determine the efficacy of explicitly teaching reading strategies to English language learners at the elementary level, specifically fourth grade. Two fourth grade classrooms, comprised of fifty-one Hispanic students who are classified as English language learners, were used in this study. One class was explicitly taught reading comprehension strategies for twenty minutes everyday while the other class did extensive reading and wrote reflections during the same twenty minute period of the day. Comparisons were made between the pretest and posttest scores as well as other assessments used in the classroom using t-tests. Results indicated that there was statistically significant improvement made by the treatment group on most assessments. The data demonstrated the efficacy of explicit instruction of reading comprehension strategies to English language learners in the fourth grade.

This user-friendly book integrates up-to-date research on best practices into each chapter and includes vignettes, classroom activities, sample lessons, a list of children's literature, and more.

Book The Effects of Language Supports on Reading Comprehension for English Language Learners with IEPs

Download or read book The Effects of Language Supports on Reading Comprehension for English Language Learners with IEPs written by Brianna Murray and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading comprehension is one of the most important aspects in building a well-rounded education. Understanding how to best support students in their reading comprehension skills is especially important for English language learners with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Research has shown that supporting students in ways such as explicit instruction scaffolding, building on prior knowledge, and vocabulary instruction can greatly increase student comprehension. In this study, two second grade students, both of which were English language learners with IEPs, participated in reading comprehension lessons taught by me. The study looked at how I, as a teacher, can use language supports that use funds of knowledge, scaffolding, and vocabulary instruction to assist English Learners with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in reading comprehension. Additionally, the study looked at how students use the language supports given to assist their reading comprehension. Through the use of lesson plans, audio recordings, anecdotal journaling, and comprehension assessments, data showed that student comprehension increased when presented with language supports such as building on prior knowledge and vocabulary instruction. It was concluded that providing language supports to students who are English language learners with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) is crucial in supporting their reading comprehension skills.

Book The Effects of Vocabulary Instruction on Reading Comprehension

Download or read book The Effects of Vocabulary Instruction on Reading Comprehension written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vocabulary understanding is an important component of the reading process and it specifically impacts a reader's comprehension success. This thesis defines the several types of vocabulary that learners use and how a student's vocabulary expands throughout the educational process. Three types of explicit vocabulary instructional strategies were identified and implemented with second grade students. Specifically, the "concept wheel," the "cloze procedure," and the "example/non-example activity" were used with students to improve vocabulary understanding and reading comprehension. Pre and post data were collected to measure vocabulary understanding and student surveys were analyzed to ascertain student strategy preference. The findings indicate positive growth with the three teaching strategies and student partiality for the "example/non-example" strategy. The results of this action project can be shared through professional development, a district eboard posting site of strategies, and a parental newsletter.
