Book Forecasting the Wages of Young Men

Download or read book Forecasting the Wages of Young Men written by Hong W. Tan and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post-war baby boom and the baby bust that followed have produced dramatic changes in both the size and in the age composition of the labor force. These demographic changes have been accompanied by changes in the age structure of civilian wages. The evidence suggests that as members of the baby boom cohorts entered the labor market in the 1960's and 1970's, their wages fell in comparison with the wages of prime age workers. The question addressed in this study is how the wage structure will change as the demographic trend reverses itself and as smaller birth cohorts enter the labor market in the 1980's and 1990's. Keywords: Youth population, Projections, Compensation, Manpower.

Book The Role of Relative Cohort Size and Relative Income in the Demographic Transition

Download or read book The Role of Relative Cohort Size and Relative Income in the Demographic Transition written by Diane J. Macunovich and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper summarizes the results of other analyses by the author with regard to the importance of relative cohort size (RCS) in determining male relative income (the income of young adults relative to prime-age workers) and general patterns of economic growth, and in turn influencing fertility in the currently more-developed nations. It then goes on to demonstrate that these same effects appear to have been operating in all of the 100-odd nations which have experienced the fertility transition since 1950. Parameter estimates based on the experience of all 189 countries identified by the United Nations between 1950 and 1995 are used to simulate the effects on fertility of migration from Third to First World countries. This exercise suggests that we get the best of all possible outcomes with migration: population is reduced in "overcrowded" Third World nations, total world population growth is substantially reduced, and scores of children are given the opportunity of growing up with all the educational and health advantages of United States residents.

Die einzelnen Komponenten der Arbeit bauen auf dem aktuellen Stand der Literatur auf und behandeln verschiedene Aspekte, die aus Sicht des Autors bisher nicht ausreichend adressiert worden sind.

Book Cohort Analysis in Social Research

Download or read book Cohort Analysis in Social Research written by W.M. Mason and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existence of the present volume can be traced to methodological concerns about cohort analysis, all of which were evident throughout most of the social sciences by the late 1970s. For some social scientists, they became part of a broader discussion concerning the need for new analytical techniques for research based on longitudinal data. In 1976, the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), with funds from the National Institute of Education, established a Committee on the Methodology of Longitudinal Research. (The scholars who comprised this committee are listed at the front of this volume. ) As part of the efforts of this Committee, an interdisciplinary conference on cohort analysis was held in the summer of 1979, in Snowmass, Colorado. Much of the work presented here stems from that conference, the purpose of which was to promote the development of general methodological tools for the study of social change. The conference included five major presentations by (1) William Mason and Herbert Smith, (2) Karl J6reskog and Dag S6rbom, (3) Gregory Markus, (4) John Hobcraft, Jane Menken and Samuel Preston, and (5) Stephen Fienberg and William Mason. The formal presentations were each followed by extensive discussion, which involved as participants: Paul Baltes, William Butz, Philip Converse, Otis Dudley Duncan, David Freedman, William Meredith, John Nesselroade, Daniel Price, Thomas Pullum, Peter Read, Matilda White Riley, Norman Ryder, Warren Sanderson, Warner Schaie, Burton Singer, Nancy Tuma, Harrison White, and Halliman Winsborough.

Book The Changing Distribution of Earnings in OECD Countries

Download or read book The Changing Distribution of Earnings in OECD Countries written by A B Atkinson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-05-01 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about how much people earn and why the distribution of earnings has been changing over time. The gap between the top and bottom in the United States has widened significantly since 1980. Why has this happened? Is it due to new technologies? What is the role of globalisation? Are there historical precedents? The book begins with the "race" between technology and education, and shows that continuing technical progress does not necessarily imply a continuing rise in dispersion. It then examines the experience of 20 OECD countries over the twentieth century, material presented in the form of 20 country case studies. The book breaks new ground in assembling data on the distribution of individual earnings covering much of the twentieth century and drawing on a variety of under-exploited sources. The findings overturn a number of widely-held beliefs. It is not the earnings of the low paid that have been most affected by the recent changes; widening is largely due to what is happening at the top. The recent rise in earnings dispersion is not unprecedented, but should be seen as part of a longer-run history of successive compression and expansion of earnings differences.
