Book excerpt: This unusual volume begins with a historical overview of the growth of attribution theory, setting the stage for the three broad domains of application that are addressed in the remainder of the book. These include applications to: achievement strivings in the classroom and the sports domain; issues of mental health such as analyses of stress and coping and interpretations of psychotherapy; and personal and business conflict such as buyer- seller disagreement, marital discord, dissension in the workplace, and international strife. Because the chapters in Attribution Theory are more research-based than practice- oriented, this book will be of great interest and value to an audience of applied psychologists.

Book Explanations in Organizations

Download or read book Explanations in Organizations written by Claude Louche and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1997 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the influence of cognitivism, explanations in everyday life constitute a major research theme in social psychology today. Studies are divided into two large domains: those of "locus of control" and causal attribution approaches. Work and organizational psychologists have not hesitated to take an interest in this research. They have made use of it to enrich their own investigations: thus the classical models of organizational psychology such as leadership and motivation have given way to explanation processes. But the study of these processes has also contributed to shedding light on the actions of practitioners. Explanations are in fact at the heart of many practices of work and organizational social psychology. They play a part in situations of recruitment, assessment, organizational consultation, and so on. This special issue will aim to present a synthesis of the large body of research devoted to "explanations in organizations".

Book New Research on the Psychology of Fear

Download or read book New Research on the Psychology of Fear written by Paul L. Gower and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fear is a normal human emotional reaction - it is a built-in survival mechanism with which we are all equipped. Fear is a reaction to danger that involves both the mind and body. It serves a protective purpose - signalling us of danger and preparing us to deal with it. The major components of fear are sensations, feelings, cognitions and behaviours. Fear can be individual or collective such as expressed in the national fear in the United States related to terrorism. The Washington DC sniper attacks caused widespread fear in a large geographic region far out of proportion to the real danger. Individuals must cope with fear on a daily basis in a myriad of forms: financial fears, health fears, relationship conflict fears, dental appointments, fears about the future etc. This new book collects important research, which helps shed light on important issues in this field which touches all of us each day.

Book excerpt: This impressive volume reintroduces the importance of -- and the contributions made by -- social psychology to school psychology. It provides an overview of the basic areas of social psychology (history, attitudes, attribution, attraction, and research methods) as well as the traditional school psychology functions (assessment, therapy, and consultation). To unite these two crucial areas, the editors and their contributors provide detailed discussions of specific educational and social issues such as substance abuse prevention and treatment, loneliness, cooperative versus competitive environments, and integration of handicapped and culturally different children. Based on classical, contemporary, and cutting-edge research and theory, this text should become an essential reference tool for all school psychologists.
